Alice in Wonderland

I don't think there's already a thread for this.

How else is excited for Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" next month? :D I hope it will be as good as it seems. I'm really excited about the casting, although I'm not too sure about the whole new plot and storyline...a sort of sequel to the original book. Anyway, I'm hoping it's going to be one of those great, quirky movies.

What do you guys think?

A sequel? That actually makes me feel better about it. Seeing posters with an adult Alice, and believing that this was a revision of the original story, I was thinking, "Blast it, can't they ever let children BE children anymore?" But if this is a sequel, then it can still be understood that Alice DID have her first adventure as a young girl.

Yes, it's a sort of sequel. Apparently Tim Burton says that he never felt a connection with the original story. Here's what one website has to say about the plot:

"Alice is now 17 years old. She attends a party at a Victorian estate. She is proposed to and surrounded by hordes of stuck-up aristocrats. In a desperate escape, she slips away, and, led by The White Rabbit, unexpectedly finds herself transported to a very curious world...Wonderland, a once peaceful kingdom, has become nightmarish under the reign of the wicked The Queen of Hearts who overthrew her sister, the White Queen. Apparently, Alice had visited Wonderland 10 years before, but had forgotten. The residents of this strange new world have not been so forgetful, however. The creatures of Wonderland, ready to revolt, wait for Alice to help them."

I am really exited!!! I'm hoping to see it with my older sister or a couple of friends.
I have read the book and really enjoyed it, and I remember when I was little that the Disney cartoon used to scare me.

Well, now that I've heard it's a sequel rather than an adpation, I feel better. It looks like it'll be either very good or very lousy. It's too early to tell, but I do like Tim Burton.

The whole revolt idea sounds a bit, I dunno, out of place, seeing as this is the same world as Alice in Wonderland.:p

Can't wait, can't wait, can't wait! Love Tim Burton, love Johnny Depp, love Helena Bonham Carter, love Alice in Wonderland, love, love, love the White Rabbit. Can't wait!

yes this sequel sounds intresting

this sequel to the orginal story of alice in wonderland sounds very intresting, it looks like a very good movie dependng on how many scary elements are in the movie, i can't wait until it comes out on DVD i might consider buying it, i can't afford to see it in theaters because it's only comeing to select theaters

YES!!! I've been waiting for this movie FOREVER! Since before they cast Alice I've known about it... my mom and I are sooooooo hyped up about it! We haven't gone to see a movie in theaters in almost a year but we'll definitely see this a few times atleast, for sure :D

Did anyone see the movie yet? I am going this afternoon at 4:15 if I get off work in time. I hope to!

But I read some bad reviews!
The Onion said:
A curiously unmemorable Johnny Depp co-stars as a not-that-mad, intermittently Scottish Mad Hatter. As with most of his co-stars, even the reliably outré Crispin Glover, his performance too often defers to the unfailingly impressive special effects around him. In spite of the voice talents of Alan Rickman, Stephen Fry, and others, only Carter’s Red Queen—played as a petulant, lackey-surrounded movie star—peels herself off the page to become a memorable character. Everyone else mostly behaves like functionaries in yet another outsized battle between good and evil that plays like the best Chronicles Of Narnia movie never made. It’s Alice in name, but Alice’s spirit remains somewhere else.
What do you think?! They say the battle at the end is Narnia-esque, or should have been. Also Roger Ebert's review said the movie was great right up until the battle at the end. Everyone thinks the battle was thrown in for no other reason than to make the movie like LOTR or LWW or (I am guessing I have not seen) Avatar.

I will let you know after I go see it ...

^Yeah, my paper didn't have a very good review, either. But then again, they never give anything a good review unless it's some vulgar R-rated movie.

Plugged In was pretty positive about it.

I've heard that Johnny Depp's part is just a repeat of his other famous characters. But I don't mind...I'm still really excited about seeing it! :p

Are ya'll planning on seeing it in 3D or 2D? I'm so glad our theater is offering 2D, too. My contacts already make my eyes feel dry in movie theaters, anyway, but 3D glasses seem to make things worse! I always feel like I'm straining my eyes or something. So I'll be sticking with 2D, LOL.

3D for me, I love 3D. Roger Ebert said it's better in 2D though; something about the colors being more true. I heard part of Plugged In, they said for teenagers, like 15 or older, it's good, but it is too scary for the younger kids. Bob W. also said it's very weird and creepy! But that's Tim Burton. :) Looks like I am going to be done with work in time to go today. Yay!

I think it's impossible for Tim Burton to create a film that isn't creepy. :p

Let us know what you think!

I saw it two days ago and I loved everything about it! The story itself wasn't amazingly captivating but the film was visually stunning, very entertaining to watch and very Tim Burton..ish :D The actors were great,I was especially impressed with Mia (I can't seem to learn how to spell her last name!) who played Alice, she isn't the greatest actress I've ever had the pleasure of watching on screen but she sure is adorable and did a good job with the character. Helena Bonham Carter was perfectly wicked, but at the same time rather cute as the Red Queen. Anne Hathaway's performance as the White Queen was lacking something though,I'm not entirely sure what but I felt she didn't always convince me. She didnt have much screentime, either.

I'd also like to add that I do not think the Mad Hatter was a repeat of Johnny's other famous characters. Willy Wonka might have been a bit of a loon but he's nothing compared to the Mad Hatter. I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like it :D

I agree with all DoE said. Up front, I am a big Tim Burton/HBC/Jonny Depp fan, and I am a big Alice in Wonderland fan, so this was kind of a match made in heaven as far as I was concerned.

The idea of a Chosen One who must Do a Great Deed is becoming hackneyed only because of LOTR/HP type series/movies, but for what it was, the story was OK, as DoE says -- not great, but it was a good framework for the film and gave us some exciting imagery. The only part that didn't work, for me, was the stuff at the very end about Alice's choices when she got back to upper land, but that's a small thing.

I loved Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum. I loved the White Rabbit! All the cgi and the Burtonesque landscapes were awesome. Jonny Depp and the March Hare were both perfectly mad; I only wish we could have seen more of the March Hare and the White Rabbit (I guess I'm a fan of the rabbit in general - it's my Chinese Zodiac sign).

I agree with DoE about the White Queen, too. She was fake. She didn't inspire me to really want her to win for her merits; just to defeat the mean Red Queen. Even when she reached out to the Red Queen, it wasn't believable.

All in all, I enjoyed it very much and while I can see Roger Ebert's point about the battle being cliche by now, I still thought it worked fine in this formulaic way, and it gave us the lovely cgi Jabberwock, which was awesome. I'd go with Bob W at Plugged In and say don't take the little kiddies, but older kids and teens will probably like it.

I REALLY want to see it,but my mum doesn't like tim burton's movies.
Gah! how can you not like tim burton movies?! even if the story is creepy or whatnot, usually the visuals are so stunning ...

i forgot to mention, i saw it in 3d, and after the first few moments you totally forgot about the 3d, you're just drawn into wonderland. i think it would be as good in 2d as 3d.
