Chapter 5
As I step out of my room. I see Caroline leaning against the door, just where I left her, sleeping. I glance out the sliding glass door to our little balcony. The potted plants sit there, beautiful, in a world full of ugly.
I will go outside and concentrate. Maybe I will be able to get this stupid voice of mine to work. I step up to the glass door, shoving it out of my way, as I step onto the balcony. The war, summer air hits, making a contrast with the cool air of the apartment. The sun is hitting my face, my arms; my entire body is soaking it in. I stretch my arms like I ready to take off as I feel the suns healing warmth. It is touching my heart. I sigh. That was exactly what I needed.
The sun is taking its western path down, taking that warm light with it by the minute. Bright reds and golds color the sky, contrasting with the darkening sky in the east.
The railing’s bars are wide enough that I can stick my legs between them. I sit down and gaze out.
With the cool air-conditioned at my back and the beautiful sunset facing me, I concentrate on turn my thoughts into spoken words.
I sit. Nothing comes to me. I can think of nothing that would improve my present condition.
“Hey Melony.” Jacob’s kid voice scatters my thoughts. I look up and see him on the next balcony over to my right. I stand up, pulling my legs out from between the bars.
I flash the brightest smile I can muster, hoping that’ll convince him of my sincerity.
“Isn’t it beautiful? Look at all the colors!” Jacob sits down the same way I had been. I retake my seat, leaning my head against the cool, iron bars in front of me.
We’ve sat here a while. The sky is dark now and the stars are starting to poke out. Cool summer air is rustling through my hair. It is wonder to sit out here underneath the stars, surrounded by potted plants. I laugh at the thought, being in a juggle of potted shrubbery.
My soft laugh has jerked Jacob from his thoughts. He is gazing at me now. His eyes fixed in mine.
“Melony, since you’ve gotten here, you haven’t said one thing to me.”
Those eyes! They’re boring into me. What do I say? What do I do?
I point to myself.
“I?” Jacob mutters, looking confused.
I shake my head.
“No.”
I make motions with my hands showing the action of speaking.
“Speak? You can’t speak?”
I nod my head wilding and put on a huge grin. Jacob is the first to know. He alone, knows my secret. Sharing, mended a piece of my deeply broken heart.
