(ooc lol football players:rolleyes: i wish lol)

"Well thanks," she smiled, "Umm no I cant say that I have. What kind of resteraunt is it?"

Seeing what was passing between their son and the beautiful newcomer, Cecilia whispered to her husband, "Did you ever see that family?"

Dr. Havens whispered back, "I think I saw the mother and one of the older girls come into the Free Clinic one day when I was donating service there, though they weren't there for dental work."

Neither Eric nor Cecilia was motivated by snobbery in this exchange. They simply had the parental instinct to wonder about ANY girl at whom their son was looking the way he was looking at Kim Tisdale. Alipang had survived mean slums in his native land, but had not so far had to try surviving the jungle of male-female relationships. Not that Miss Tisdale necessarily had any intentions toward Alipang; it was too soon to tell.

"It's the only Filipino restaurant in town," Alipang replied, gaining a little confidence with a topic he knew well. "We serve all sorts of dishes from my birth country." He suddenly realized that he was still holding on to Kim's hand. He loosened his grip, so she could easily withdraw her hand at will, but he did not actually let go. Regardless of all the "Eye-gate" sermons he had heard, this modest physical touch was affecting him far MORE than even so splendid a sight as Kim was. "If you know Chinese food at all, some dishes are similar. For instance, lumpia are pretty much the same as eggrolls." He had a wild thought of asking her to lunch then and there, but figured his chances would be about the same as his chances of flapping his arms and flying back to Luzon for a visit.

As if intending to be the cavalry to Alipang's rescue, Rafael and Carmen Imada joined in the introductions. Carmen went to Mrs. Tisdale, delaying her departure into Virginia's August heat. "Forgive me for not getting to you sooner! My name's Carmen Imada, and I'm SO happy that you joined us. Did you fill out a visitor card...?"

Rafael, meanwhile, came up in support of his favorite employee. "Miss Tisdale, is it? I heard the Pansit Paradise being mentioned; I'm the owner, but Alipang here practically runs the place for me! Now, please don't think badly of Pastor Tom for not asking visitors to stand up; he was preoccupied with the volunteer recognition today. Won't you please let me fill in the welcoming that the Stetzers would usually do? Please, let me treat your whole family to lunch at my restaurant."

"Oh that would be wonderful!" Elizabeth said, but she feared new food, but it was a chance to socialize and she was a social creature.

Kim smirked as he talked about chinese food, "Duly noted," she said, as she let her hand fall to her side.

Alipang would not have been bothered by her withdrawing her hand, if not for the smirk showing up at the same time. Let's see, how long did THAT fantasy last, four seconds? Might as well give her the rest of the reasons for looking down her nose at him. "I'll see you folks at the restaurant; my parents will drive me there for work. I've got my learner's permit, but I won't have my license for at least two more months; and I'm still saving to buy my own car. I'll plan on waiting your table."

Now Alipang was certain that he was once again a non-entity to the shapely stranger Kim Tisdale. Mr. Imada, though, obliviously went on chattering to Kim and her sisters as if Kim and Alipang were already engaged. Before long, a general movement was beginning in the direction of the Pansit Paradise; even if the Tisdales had not been invited as free guests, there were usually church members to be seen at lunch there after any service.

Driving in the car (an old Volts(sp?)wagon Bus) Elizabeth had Kim sit in the front seat. "I think the Havens' son has a crush on you."

Kim slapped her forehead, "Mom you think every boy has a crush on me!"

"Well its usually true. Besides, you do look cute in that dress."

I look like a plum. She inspected the bright colors. A neon plum. "Thanks mom, but I dont think Alipang has a crush on me."

"Is that his name Alprang?"

"Al-lee-pang."

"Oh oh...Al-leeeeee-pang."

Thankfully they reached the resteruant and parked the car.

Alipang was there just sufficiently ahead of them to have his official waiter-shirt on. His parents remained to eat also, but tried not to hover. As the Tisdales were seated, joined at the table by Mrs. Imada, Alipang grimly went into cheerful-waiter mode.

"If you look at your menus, you'll see symbols beside many items. The red pepper means hot spicy dishes, of course. The orange heart means salt-free items; and the green leaf means vegetarian items. For beginners, I recommend the pansit dishes our place is named for. You can get as much variety in toppings as with pasta at an Italian restaurant. Now, can I get you something to drink?"

During all this, Alipang tried not to look at Kim either less or more than he looked at the other Tisdales.

"Do you all have root beer?" Kim said letting her Georgia Peach accent fall out. She winced she hated it!

(ooc that happens all the time! ugh!)

No matter what Kim thought of her own accent, for Alipang the effect on his ears was like the effect of the most delicious ice cream ever made on his tongue. He could not restrain himself from smiling directly at her as he replied, "Yes, we do have root beer. No diet versions, though; Mr. Imada studies nutrition--his younger brother is a martial-arts instructor--and he says that most diet drinks contain chemicals that are worse for you than the sugar you're avoiding. Any other drink requests?"

"Ok, then root beer it is."

"I'll have unsweet tea, no lemon," Said Elizabeth.

"Coke no ice," said Sharon and Susan.

"And sweet Tea," said Betsy.

Alipang was back with all the drinks in a flash, and he remembered the no-ice and no-lemon requests. His eyes now took over control of his neck muscles for a moment, forcing him to gaze directly at Kim for longer than business required. He thought her dress was perfect on her. "Mrs. Tisdale, ladies, do you need more time to decide what you want? Or do you have any questions?" Carmen Imada was first to answer him: "You know my usual, Alipang."

"Hmmm im not sure, what do you suggest?" Elizabeth asked.

Kim and her sisters tried to figure the menu out.

(ooc im off to bed. i gots chusrch in the morning.)

ALREADY, WE GET A SUMMARY--FOR THE
BENEFIT OF THOSE NOT IN THE EARLY ACTION.

Prior to the school year starting, Dayhawk's character, Kim Tisdale, has come with her fatherless family to visit a racially-integrated church in town. She thus gets to see when my own character, Alipang Havens--adopted Filipino son of a dentist and his wife--is among church members honored on the platform for charity work. Alipang also notices her, and instantly forms a thousand-gigawatt crush on her. The two families are mutually introduced; and, though Alipang doesn't think he has a snowball's chance with Kim, his boss at the restaurant where he works intervenes, to try to GIVE Alipang a chance. Thus Alipang, who is about a year and a half younger than Kim though highly intelligent, is now waiting on the table where Kim and her mother and sisters are sitting together with the restaurant owner's wife--because Mr. Rafael Imada, the owner, has invited all the Tisdales to eat lunch at the "Pansit Paradise" for free.

Note: Though the Katon siblings have not entered the action, Alipang is friends with them.

"Hmmm im not sure, what do you suggest?" Elizabeth asked. Kim and her sisters tried to figure the menu out.

Alipang needed only moments to recommend a family combination meal which would include:

-- Two kinds of soup, one spicy and the other not.

-- Three flavors of pansit: with pork, with chicken, and vegetarian; spices on the side for optional use.

-- Beef lumpia and vegetarian lumpia.

-- Some very spicy broiled fish, on about a heat-level with Cajun cooking.

-- Vegetarian fried rice.

-- Ice cream to soothe spice-burned mouths.

What Mrs. Imada was having, meanwhile, was so scorchingly spicy that many Americans would find their eyes burning just by being near it. She was cast into a nostalgic mood by seeing the way Alipang looked at Kim; it was the way Filipino men had looked at Mrs. Imada when she was a girl. As a matter of fact, American soldiers had also looked at her that way, but she was not a loose woman. Not that all American soldiers were wicked in their desires; many had honorably married women who were known to Carmen. But Rafael had been the man for her.

Jennifer and her mother came into the restaraunt, a little late after church traffic. Since they were late, they got a small table nearby a window. Jennifer, much to her disliking, is wearing a black dress with black flats. She and her mother skim through the menu quickly.

Maria Ramos, a thirty-something divorcee and niece to Mrs. Imada, comes alongside the new customers' table. \\\ OOC: I assume that Jennifer has been here before, so she would know Maria. In fact, I just decided that Maria has a son, Pablo, who is starting at the high school as a freshman, and whom Jennifer would at least know OF.

Meanwhile, Alipang made sure that he was keeping up with every other task, lest he find himself stupidly glued to the Tisdales' table. What was the point, after all? Homeschooler though he was, Alipang knew enough about "regular" adolescence to know that there existed an aristocracy of the cool and the attractive: an aristocracy that cut right across lines of race, education and financial status, and one which would put Kim far above him in the world of high school. Not to mention her age, for on closer observation he was fairly certain that she was older than he. Football goons, who didn't have even half of Alipang's knowledge, AND whom Alipang could easily destroy in a streetfight, would belong to the aristocracy he didn't belong to; and Kim could surely take her pick among them.
