jennifer, not waiting for maria's reply, decided to go and talk to the newcomers. she started with chilana, who looked upset.

"hi," she said.

Melody and Harmony Havens, Alipang's little Chinese sisters, caught a glimpse of Grant through the window. This being a safe neighborhood, their mother allowed them to step JUST a step outside the door, into the late-August sunshine. The children were fond of Grant, who had ministered in music to the children's church several times.

"Grant! Grant! Come on and join us!"

"You gonna sing for us, Grant?"

Chilana's effort to be accepted was supported by the elderly but lively Filipina lady known to many of the young people as Aunt Carmen. "Don't leave, sweetheart, whatever you do! No one's ignoring you, it's just a bit busy today, with only Al and Maria serving."

Maria, meanwhile, accepted Jennifer's offer to help: Jennifer would carry the dishes to the table of interest to her, while Maria served another table whose order would be coming up abut the same time.

Jennifer waited for Maria's next job for her, and then noticed the boy who must have been Alipang looking at the youngest of the Tisdale girls.

Kaitlyn almost fell over when she tried to nudge Jennifer. It took her a moment to collect her balence before she realized Jennifer had left. The girl had gone over to talk to the new people, a thing Jason would be insisting they should do, but not having the guts to do it if he were here. She got her food and started eating, blocking the rest of the world out.

The sound of Grant starting to play and sing just outside reached the ears of many, despite the doors and windows being shut to accommodate the air conditioning.

Alipang, hustling from place to place as work demanded, thought to himself, If Kim likes singing, Grant's got her now. Alipang loved Grant like a brother, for they WERE brothers in Jesus Christ; but he would have been happier, just now, NOT to have his nose rubbed in the fact that so many other guys were more cool and slick than he.

Alipang kept working; suddenly it seemed to him that all he ever did was work, in one fashion or another. But he could not resent it too much; he remembered how hard his birth mother in the Philippines had worked for him and his birth sister. Now both of them were watching Alipang from Heaven, and he wanted them to be pleased with him; so he kept on working.

Grant finished the song, his smile widened. "Thanks for singing along you guys", he said with gratitude. "Any requests?", he then asked looking around

"Father Abraham Had Many Sons!" Melody squealed. "And say left foot, right foot!" She was too young to appreciate the distinction of original compositions.

Grant laughed again. "Now now one at a time," he said raising his hands to lower the volume of the chatter that had risen all the sudden. "Let's go for Melody's request', he said as he began to strum his guitar toi the tune of the song.
