Zhu ni shengri kuaile.

We also have a more traditional song, but to my greatest shame, I never learned it.

in my country... we sing it

selamat ulang tahun kami ucapkan
selamat ulang tahun kami doakan
semoga panjang umur

selamat (happy)... ulang tahun (birthday)...

How do you say "Happy Birthday" in your language? If there is a song, is it the same melody as the English song?

If there's anyone who doesn't know, "Happy Birthday" in English goes like this:
Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday to you.
Happy birthday dear ____,
Happy birthday to you.

Here's the music to "Happy Birthday" in English (this contains the original words): Good Morning

Also, are there any traditions that your culture has for birthdays?

This is the first verse for are birthday song, but we also sing:

May the good Lord Bless You,
May the good Lord Bless You.
May the good Lord Bless _____,
May the good Lord Bless You.
It goes to the same tune.

In Russian it would be something like (phonetically): "Poze-drahv-l'yah-yu tibyah sa d'nyohm rozhdenniyah."

Yeah. The song basically goes with the same words..

S dnyem rozhdenniyah tebya,
S dnyem rozhdenniyah tebya,
S dnyem rozhenniyah, s dnyem rozhdenniyah,
S dnyem rozhdenniyah tebya!

lol. same words over and over again

German:

"happy Birthday" means Herzlichen Glückwunsch, but the song is different

Zum Geburtstag viel Glück,
Zum Geburtstag viel Glück,
Zum Geburtstag, liebe/r _____________
Zum Geburtstag viel Glück!

I remember singing this in my German school! :)

I'm Canadian, so I speak English and that one's already been posted. And then Canada's other national language is French, but that one's also already been posted...

Tsnundud Shnoravor
Tsnundud Shnoravor
Tsnundud Shnoravor sireli ________
Tsnundud Shnoravor.

That was the happy birthday song in Armenian. There are actually several versions.

^ what a cute rabbits^ :D

In Indonesian :

"Selamat Ulang Tahun (happy B'day)
Kami ucapkan (We say to you)
Selamat Panjang Umur kita kan doakan (happy anniversary, we'll pray for you)
Selamat sejahtera, sehat sentosa (wish you always be healthy)
Selamat Panjang Umur dan Bahagia (happy anniversary and we wish you happily ever after)"

Kind of that.. :D

a more depressing english one that my family gets a kick out of singing to each other

happy birthday,
happy birhtday,
people dying everywhere,
no one seems to give a care,
happy birthday,
happy birthday

i think there was more, but i cant remember it

This is totally different from the english phrase...

Marathi- "Vaddivasachya hardik shubicha"
-literally translated- "Vad divas=birthday; hardik=heartfelt; shubh=good; icha=wish"

Hindi- "Janamdin ki shubh kamnayay". -
"Janam=birth, din=day; shubh=good; kamnayay=wishes."....breathe...phew:D

In Swedish we say;

Grattis på födelsedagen (or just Grattis for short). Literally translated as 'Congratulations on your birthday'. The word 'Grattis' in itself as an abbreviation for 'Gratulerar'.

We have so many birthday songs in Swedish. Each family probably has their own unique one. There is one that uses the same melody as the English one but it's probably the least used one. It'd take forever to give you a sample of the massive archive of Swedish birthday songs, hehe.

Most families in Sweden choose to celebrate the person in the morning while he or she is still sleeping. You do this by entering their bedroom singing whatever birthday song you traditionally sing in your family. You also bring the presents with you and in some families also a cake or breakfast in bed. Granted, if you live alone this birthday morning tradition doesn't really apply to you, hehe.
