Left in the Shadows

(In Petra and Obi-Wan’s apartments, they’re celebrating Obi-Wan’s return home. They had finished the meal and were eating dessert when Petra decided to approach Obi-Wan about her idea.)

Petra: “Obi-Wan, if there was one thing you could give me to make me truly happy, would you do it?’

Obi-Wan: “Of course. What is it?”

Petra: “I want to go back to Tattoine.”

Obi-Wan: “going back to that desert-hole would make you happy?”

Petra: “No. I want to find my mother and free her.”

(Obi-Wan stood up)

Obi-Wan: “No.”

Petra: “Just like that? You haven’t even thought about it.”

Obi-Wan: “I said no, and I mean no. I’m not thinking about it.”

Petra: “Obi-Wan, you are so stubborn!”

Obi-Wan: “I don’t care. We’re not going.”

Petra: “It wouldn’t have to be ‘we.’ It would just be me and possibly Anakin.”

Obi-Wan: *raising his voice* “What did I just say?”

(Petra retreats as the tears threaten to fall)

Petra: “You said no.”

Obi-Wan: “That’s right. And if you try to go to Tattoine, I’ll track you down so fast you won’t have time to blink!”

(He leaves the room, obviously angry and upset. Petra’s tears don’t’ listen to her and they fall down her cheeks. Anakin comes around and wraps his arms around her neck.)

Anakin: “He didn’t mean it.”

Petra: *sobbing* “Yes he did. When he raises his voice like that, he’s serious.”

Anakin: “Maybe we…”

Petra: “No. No, we can’t try to sneak off. He’d be so angry…”

(She starts sobbing again. Anakin kisses her on the cheek.)

Anakin: “Maybe I can talk to him.”

Petra: *slightly smiling* “Thanks, Ani. But it’ll blow over. We’ll work this out eventually.”

(But it never did work out. Petra was too afraid to approach Obi-Wan about it again that she never spoke of it again. 7 years later, she regretted keeping silent. Even though Petra and Obi-Wan’s marriage got stronger and their love went deeper through the years, she still had an ache in her heart whenever she thought of her mother.)

Aw! How sad! *cries for Petra* Communication is key in a marry-e-ahj. ;)

~Back on Tattoine~

(Later that day that Shmi received the letter, she decided she would tell Cliegg about her children. When Shmi first started working for Cliegg, she was surprised when Cliegg allowed her to eat at their table; normally employees ate apart from their employers and families. Thus, Shmi figured out that Cliegg had an ulterior motive for allowing her that privilege: he was in love. Although she knew nothing about love or Cliegg’s former life, she knew enough to figure out he was interested in her, and more than as an employer.)

Cliegg: “Did the letter bear good news?”

Shmi: “Yes…yes it did.”

Cliegg: “How come your daughter is no longer with you?”

(Shmi took a deep breath. She and Owen had a good relationship, but she didn’t want to say this in front of him. Cliegg seemed to sense this.)

Cliegg: “Owen, will you excuse us for a moment?”

Owen: “yes sir.”

(He left the table and room.)

Cliegg: “If you don’t want to tell me, you don’t have to.”

Shmi: “No. I need to tell you. It’s not right for me to keep you in the dark.”

(Cliegg stopped eating and waited for her to start.)

Shmi: “Three years ago, my daughter and son, Petra and Anakin, left me with a Jedi Master.”

(Cliegg’s eyebrows were raised.)

Cliegg: “Might I ask why?”

Shmi: “the Jedi master and his friends had a ship that was damaged and needed parts. Watto wouldn’t give them the parts because all they had were Republic credits. So, Anakin raced in the podrace for the parts. In doing so, Qui-Gon, the Jedi, influenced Watto to give Anakin and Petra their freedom and the ship parts should he win the race. He won the race, and got the parts and he and his sister’s freedom. They left not long after the race.”

Cliegg: “You must miss them greatly.”

Shmi: “I do miss them. Petra is married and has a son. I wish I could see them.”

Cliegg: “Are they coming here?”

Shmi: “Who knows…her husband sounds like a stubborn man.”

(Shmi smiled. She remembered her thought about how she felt sorry for her daughter’s future husband; sounded like Petra had met her match.)

Shmi: “But it fits her…she is stubborn and determined.”

*this is it until Monday...I'll be away this weekend starting tomorrow.*

sorry about the not-talking-thing. I'm on now, though. I will try to be on until like 10 my time. I have to leave at 6 tomorrow morning, so that means I have to get up by at least 5:15.

Cliegg: “Like her mother?”

(He smiled at her. She blushed and smiled back.)

Shmi: “I’m not her real mother. I’m Anakin’s real mother only. I adopted Petra when she was five.”

Cliegg: “Interesting.”

Shmi: “Anyway, that’s not the strangest part of my story, and I’m not sure you’d believe how I came to be with Anakin.”

Cliegg: *smiling* “There’s only one way, right?”

(Shmi blushed a deeper shade of red.)

Shmi: “No. I had never been with any man and I say that on my honor.”

Cliegg: “I believe you.”

Shmi: “It’s just that for two months, I couldn’t’ eat anything in the morning or else…well, you know. I asked a neighbor, who had children, why I was having these symptoms, and she told me that I was probably pregnant. I waited a few weeks and I began to show obvious signs of it. At first, I was embarrassed because I wasn’t sure how it happened; it just happened. But closer to the time I was due, I didn’t care anymore. I was going to have a child, be it boy or girl, and I was happy about it.”

Cliegg: “It’s a bit unbelievable, but I have no doubt you’re telling me the truth.”

Shmi: “Thank you.”

(They return to eating for a while. Cliegg couldn’t help but steal a few glances at Shmi when she wasn’t looking. He had to tell her about his feelings, and this seemed like the perfect time to do so.)

Cliegg: “Shmi, I need to confess something to you.”

Shmi: “To me?”

Cliegg: “yes…since my wife died, it’s been hard for me to imagine falling in love with anyone else…”

(‘Oh no, here it comes’ entered Shmi’s mind.)

Cliegg: “…but I think it is possible, don’t’ you?’

Shmi: *innocently* “I suppose so.”

Cliegg: *shaking his head* “I’m not doing this very well. One thing I ask of you before I tell you is this: please don’t think of me as a fool.”

Cliegg: *chuckling* “Thanks. I suppose I should just say this out right: Shmi Skywalker, I love you as much as I loved my wife. And if you return the feeling, I would be honored if you would become my wife.”

(Shmi gasped. Whether she had wanted to admit it or not, she loved him deeply. And, as she had realized before, not as her employer.)

Shmi: “Cliegg, I do love you.”

(He let out a deep breath)

Cliegg: “I assume there’s a ‘but’ to follow.”

Shmi: *she laughed* “There are no ‘buts’ about it. I would be honored to become your wife.”

(Before she knew it, he was kissing her deeply. Without knowing what she was doing, she wrapped her arms around his neck. She was right; when love comes, it comes softly and without warning. At least, her experience proved it. Now she knew how much happiness Petra was feeling. It was a great feeling.)

~Two Days Later~

(Owen had been told about Cliegg’s proposal beforehand, and he, yearning to have a mother again, gave his wholehearted consent. Cliegg and Shmi were married the next day. Shmi, because of her marriage to Cliegg, was now considered free and no longer anyone’s slave. She was enjoying a level of happiness that she had never experienced before in her lifetime. She was also growing closer to Owen; in fact, he was almost her own son. His childhood friend, Beru Whitesun, had grown into a beautiful young lady, and Shmi had suspicions that someday soon, he and Beru would get married. She and Beru also had a close friendship, and Shmi liked her the first time she met her. Beru reminded Shmi of her daughter, which brought a twinge of pain every so often.)
