Left in the Shadows

~Two Years Later~

My Dearest Petra,
I’m writing this letter not knowing when I’ll see you again. It has been two years since you and Ani left and I wish I could see you now. I hope that you have found a man who loves you and is taking care of you, and that you both are well. I long to hold both of you in my arms once more, but that seems almost impossible. I hope that you come home one day and find this letter. I’m being sold to a moisture farmer named Cliegg Lars on the outside of town. Maybe this will be a better place to start. I love you and Ani dearly, and I hope that I will see you again one day.

Your Loving Mother,
Shmi.

(Shmi set the pen aside and re-read the letter. Hopefully one day, one of her children would find the letter. She had gotten the news yesterday that she was being sold to Cliegg Lars, a moisture farmer. She had met the man when he came to buy new parts for his machines….but instead of buying simply parts, he bought her. He seemed nice enough and he treated her with respect for the short time they had been together. She had packed the last of her things and Cliegg would be here in a matter of minutes. She took one last look around the hovel that had been her home for such a long time. Her mind traveled to when she was just a few months from delivering Anakin. Petra was 10 at the time.)

Shmi: “Petra, can you hand me that screwdriver over there?”

(Petra handed the tool to Shmi.)

Shmi: “Thank you.”

(She winced and rubbed her back.)

Petra: “Here, mom, let me do that. You should rest.”

Shmi: “Thank you, Petra.”

(She sat back while Petra worked on the machine.)

Petra: “Mom, why do I look different than you?”

(The question shocked Shmi. She was speechless.)

Petra: “Did I say the wrong thing?”

Shmi: “No…no, the question just caught me off-guard is all”

Petra: “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to…”

Shmi: “No, it’s fine. I probably should tell you anyway.”

(Petra stopped what she was doing and sat at her mom’s feet)

Petra: “I’m ready.”

Shmi: “well, you already know that I’m not married.”

(Petra just nodded)

Shmi: “Do you remember when you were five?”

Petra: “Just bits and pieces…I remember my transmitter being put in.”

Shmi: *nodding* “That’s hard to forget. Anyway, you’re not my blood daughter.”

(Petra is stunned)

Petra: “I’m not?”

Shmi: “No, you’re not. I adopted you when you were five. That’s why you don’t look like me at all.”

Petra: “What happened to my parents?”

Shmi: “I’m not sure.”

(Petra thinks about this for a while as she resumes working.)

Petra: “Did you ever meet my parents?”

Shmi: “no, I didn’t. Best not to dwell on it anymore, Petra. We need to get this done as soon as possible.”

Petra: “Yes ma’am.”

(Shmi continued to watch her daughter. AT only 10 years old, she was beautiful. Shmi smiled. IN her mind, she imagined that Petra would have hundreds of young men lined up to…then again, what young man would be interested in even a beautiful slave? Petra would have him until she revealed who she really was. Shmi sighed. She had to release Petra when she was old enough. She deserved so much better than a slave’s life.)

I'll send in my resume to be your gaurd... :D;)

and a very good job so far. very sweet

accepted. You can start immediately

Doesn't matter, GG. :D I'll still find a way to get past you! :p

well, I'm getting ready to scan my pics from the SW exhibit into my computer, so once I do that and get them uploaded to photobucket, they're going up here so everybody can see whose costumes I got to take a picture next to.

(A knock interrupted her thoughts. She got up from the desk and opened the door. This was it…she knew that Cliegg Lars was on the other side, so she wasn’t surprised to see him.)

Cliegg: “Are you ready?”

Shmi: “Yes sir.”

Cliegg: “Alright then. Let me get your things.”

Shmi: “No, I’ll get them. I work for you, remember?”

(He laughed, but Shmi didn’t find it quite as funny. He saw her unmoved expression.)

Cliegg: “You don’t have to be so rigid.”

Shmi: “In fact I do. I’m your employee.”

(She picks her suitcases and walks out the door.)

Cliegg: *whispering* “Hopefully that will change.”

awesome!!!

I will not be posting more until Monday or Tuesday...frankly, this is the first time I've ever been truly stuck on a project...this is the only story I've written that I have to come up with brand-new material, and to be honest, I'm finding it hard. Had backstory been written on Shmi and her life afterwards, I could do this much easier. So, any story ideas or stuff like that is appreciated; however, I'll be away from DL from Aug. 10-12.

~One Year Later~

(Shmi had worked for the Lars’ family for a year and nothing between her and her employer had changed, at least, in her mind anyway. In Cliegg’s mind, he wanted to be more than an employer to her…in fact, he was falling in love with her with every passing day.)

(Shmi was working on a moisture vaporator with 3PO when Cliegg walked over to them.)

Cliegg: “How’s it coming?”

Shmi: “Fine…it’s almost fixed.”

Cliegg: “Do you need that big of a power converter on something so small?”

Shmi: “Normally I’d use a smaller converter, but with the larger one, you’ll be able to convert more power.”

Cliegg: “I know that, but why are you using a large converter?”

Shmi: *she starts to reply back, but bites her tongue. She says something different than planned* “I’m sorry, sir…I’ll change it to a smaller converter.”

Cliegg: “Very well.”

(He starts to walk off, but then turns around)

Cliegg: “And please, stop calling me sir. I’ve put up with it for a year, and I don’t think you have to be quite so formal.”

Shmi: “Why?”

Cliegg: “Just because I said.”

(Without waiting for an answer, he walked off. Shmi didn’t want to admit it, but she was beginning to have feelings for him…ones that went beyond employment and friendship.)

*thankfully I got un-stuck for now and wrote some more. Enjoy.*
