MERGED thread on Comments re: TV spots, trailers & publicity stills

The first trailer was horrible. It almost made me embarassed to want to see VotDT.

But the second and third trailers made me feel a lot better.

Still, none of the trailers for VotDT have given me that amazed sensation that I felt when watching the LWW and PC trailers.

I'm glad to hear this. I really like they way the magic was visualized in LWW. For example, in the first meeting of Edmund and the White Witch, I was impressed with how the hot drink and Turkish Delight appeared and how the hot drink morphed into snow when Ginabrik threw it toward the tree.

I feel the same way!

Um, Josh, you felt magic when you watched the PC trailer? I was excited, of course, but I also felt kinda embarrassed to want to see the movie because it didn't look anything like the book.

The visual aspect of it looks incredible from one of the later trailers - bright and clear, with a good balance of dark in it (I love the shot of Aslan on the island with dragon-Eustace with the dark clouds and such behind him). That's how LWW was - PC was mostly dark and pretty gritty compared to LWW.

Edit: yes, I was thinking of the 3rd trailer.

So you like Narnian magic? Set a tray of chocolate chip cookies in front of this badger and I'll make them disappear. :D

I've heard from "Narnia critics" that VODT is much closer to the book than PC was and the only part of the trailer that really had me worried (The part with Susan and Peter in their Narnia outfits) was misleading. :D I'm very excited about this movie! It was probably my favorite book and I'm expecting it to be the best of the movies...so far ;)

Liberties with the storyline (spoilers)

It took me a while, but I eventually got to see the trailer.

A couple of things I disapprove of.

The first is Ramandu's daughter.
At least, I think it was her.
There's a glowing woman.
In the book, they refer to her father "having a faint silver light, even in the daytime".
But there is no such reference to her having a aura like this.
In fact, in Silver Chair, they make an obscure reference to her not being a pure star (probably indicating her mother was human), but having the blood of the stars in her veins.

The second is the White Witch.
How many times are they going to bring her back when she's never involved?
The last time was in Prince Caspian.
In the book, although the ritual to bring her back is about her, we never see her.
In Voyage of the Dawntreader, nobody really sees any of their nightmares, having not been there long enough to be affected.
Caspian walking around "not looking behind him" is all that really happens.

Apparently you haven't been informed regarding the White Witch.

She appears only as Edmund's nightmare; they are exaggerating her role in the film.

As for Lilliandil/Ramandu's Daughter....I don't know because I haven't seen the movie. Ask NarniaExpert because he's seen the movie and knows what's in it and what's not. But all I can say is, these kinds of things have already been made known in the Fears thread and other threads, so this is an unnecessary thread.

iMerge several threads discussing the trailer/tv spot.

Let's try to keep all our comments/speculation on the previews in this one thread. Thanks!

Um, Josh, you felt magic when you watched the PC trailer?

Yeah. Not sparkly kiddy magic, but I got the same feeling I got when I watched the LWW trailer.

The opening scene in the trailer when the kids go from the train station to Narnia, to me was just visually amazing. It was true to the book, but shown in a way that exceeded what I had visualized when I read it.

Same with the shots of the dryads forming, the shots of the Pevensies discovering the ruins, and the White Witch scene.

I remember feeling chills when I saw the shot ot he White Witch. I thought it was such a good way to adapt the Sorcery and Sudden Vengance scene from the book. I rememberr all of the discussion and controversy regarding the scene, and because of it it became the most anticipated scene in the movie for me. I thought it looked eerie, but it captured a sense of wonder as well.

Add to that the cool shots of the Night Raid and the catapaults, topped with the River God (that was cool), with the roar of Aslan to finish it off and you've got an amazing trailer.

An amazing trailer that promoted a film that disappointed many. I, for one, don't like PC as an adaptation.

*crickets chirping*

Did I really say that? :p
LOL. :)

OK, back to the VDT trailer. So Georgie said in her interview that the jealousy between Lucy and Susan is the stumbling block Lucy has to overcome in VDT, which is a film about temptation and overming it. So do you think that will all play out in the scene with the Magician's Spell Book? It looks like, from the trailer, that's going to be an awesome scene.

I was all "magic... ed" when I watch the PC trailer... and then I watched the movie!! I haven't recovered from that disappointment. But after meeting Georgie and Will I feel a little better.

I think that it will be a great scene of character revealing for Lucy. I mean, as the audience, we've grown up with her. We've seen how she's changed, and I think this movie will really exhibit her maturity, both as a character and as an actress. I'm looking forward to everything in the movie. :D
