Sonnets Here, In-House

Yes, Reagan, it was for you. The old essay of mine, to which the sonnet alludes, used the scenario of chainsaws in the dark to illustrate the following truths about human interactions:

1) We can hurt others without knowing what we're doing.

2) We don't always know how to STOP hurting others.

3) You never know how people will react to real or imagined insults or threats from others.

4) Enlightenment given by God can make a great and sudden difference.

OKay now I understand. I'm glad someone here understands that I can get things too:)
I usually wouldn't be invited into a conversation about this church,but they don't realize I'm listening,though I look like I'm not

A Mutant Sonnet
for the Young Lady

(I say "mutant" because the rhyme scheme changes from verse to verse.)

Young lady, will you be in Pittsburgh when
They open up the Festival of Ren?
'Twould be a shame if life should be so hard
That you could not get out there in your garb.

And will you visit Ireland one more time?
I'll bet they still have castles new to you.
I hope you get back to that land of rhyme
And music, dating back to King Boru.

Though questions rise about what really ails
You, dear young girl, my prayers remain the same:
I seek your healing in the Savior's name;
Whatever the disease, Christ never fails.

I pray in ignorance, but all He sees;
May He cure you of all infirmities.

A Sonnet Which Is A Prayer,
For One Whom I Love G-Ratedly

To pray for the young lady is my aim.
In powerlessness and in ignorance,
I fall upon invoking Jesus' name,
Unsure if I can accurately glance

Into the nature of her true distress.
Does she herself know what's the inside scoop
On all her troubles? If the answer's yes,
Does she feel able to inform this group?

If literally she should break her back,
My prayer would cover that; and equally,
If she turned out a hypochondriac,
She'd get no less of love and prayers from me.

Let illness be in spirit, mind or bod;
I'll keep on asking help for her from God.

For the Young Lady, on the
Subject of Self-Understanding

Before the world's first mirrors had been made
(The first were made of metal, not of glass),
Reflections were unsteady things that played
On water; they would come, and they would pass.

Now mirrors, film and video provide
All sorts of outward views of one's own face.
But all this doesn't show us what's inside;
Real knowledge of oneself's a priceless grace.

Self-love's not what I mean; that's widely had.
I mean the vital discipline which looks
Inside oneself to see the good and bad,
Both truthfully, like auditing the books.

We may not like what thus will come to light--
I know I don't!--but seeking truth is right.

To Grateful Surrender,
EVEN THOUGH she's rarely on here these days

"Bear one another's burdens," Paul commands;
We see that burdens come in many shapes.
We may feel that there's no strength in our hands,
And feel that opportunity escapes

Without fulfillment, with no good at all
Emerging from the pains of those we love;
But love, which is the essence of our call,
Is called upon to try, though trying's tough.

We never know if one far-sunk in grief,
Too stricken to applaud us for our care,
May nonetheless experience relief
Just from the knowledge of our being there.

Love wins by even making the attempt,
So bear compassion like a sacrament.

A new house to be had--what splendid news!
The sense of territory, of "my turf,"
Is highly human; I would hate to lose
That quality in favor of "One Earth."

My quarter-century with my first wife
Had bookends, in the form of houses owned,
Beginning and concluding married life;
Then Mary went off to be crowned and robed.

With Janalee, I moved where I live now:
A house which houses memories of both.
In spirit, they're with me when eating chow,
And when I work online, and when I loaf.

You girls have the experience to come
Of homes recalling all you've been or done.
