Sonnets Here, In-House

Captain Holly, I suggest to you what I have suggested to many other members: message me with five or six facts about yourself which you would LIKE to have mentioned, and I'll build a sonnet around those facts. When I have the time, that is. This evening, I'm going to be at a Finnish-American Christmas party with Carol. :rolleyes::D

For Captain Holly

Our Captain Holly thinks himself un-hip;
Yet by the name he uses, I infer
That he has read the Down of Watership,
Which, years ago, created quite a stir.

Though Hazel and his comrades were not green,
They clearly did inspire our forum-friend.
He has real feelings, not like a machine;
And what he brings to friendships may extend

Someday into a sweet romantic tie,
If he can overcome what he's confessed
As his great problem--that he's very shy;
I hope in time he may be thusly blessed.

Meanwhile, he has the chance to sink his teeth
In further learning, and in true belief.

Second Sonnet For Carol

(NOTE THAT "J" IN THE FINNISH TERMS SOUNDS LIKE OUR "Y")

The Finnish, to themselves, are Suomi;
And they refer to God as Jumula.
Upon the season of Nativity,
Their children always give a true hurrah

To Joulupukki, Finland's Santa Claus,
Who blows a horn-call to announce he's there.
The songs and gifts keep coming without pause,
Till Joulupukki has to fly elsewhere.

As Carol's guest, I witnessed all of this,
And ate smoked salmon, plus a fine pea soup;
It was a party I'd be sad to miss,
But Carol was the prize of all the group.

I plan to see much more of her, which means
More sonnets, while we're dating just like teens.

What a joy to have the gift of friendship and hope to bless your Advent season...
A Carol to sing about!

And your Captain Holly one was well done-- I especially liked the ending.

What a joy to have the gift of friendship and hope to bless your Advent season...
A Carol to sing about!

Thank you. Yes, the fact that her name is like the _word_ for a Christmas song had not escaped me. But.... friendship? I already had whole battalions of _friends,_ and God bless you all; but I'm hoping that Carol may become what I _haven't_ had for nearly four years now.

It was! Using a song sheet, I was able to sing along phonetically with Christmas songs IN FINNISH. Now, if God will just see fit to let Carol and me have some TIME together before the whole world collapses around our ears...

awwww that's so sweet :) You've been trying to get a date for a long time haven't you? I hope Carol works out for you! She seems interesting.
I wish you the best of luck my friend! <3

On Despondency, A
Common Experience

When laboratory rats try every switch,
And _always_ get the shock, they give up soon.
When life won't even let you scratch an itch,
And your guitar will never stay in tune,

When you get blamed for other people's sins,
While real offenders always get free rides,
You'll feel as if the good guy never wins,
And yes, you'll start to think of changing sides.

I frankly don't know why God makes us wait
So _very_ long for things to turn out right;
We must, however, try to contemplate
The vindication He keeps out of sight.

A thousand years are as a day to Him,
And _somewhere_ on the way, the good guys win.

For Jeff Greenberg,
Deceased 30 November

Jet pilots, even astronauts, on swings;
The higher swinging, higher was the flight.
Not settling for ordinary things,
We roamed a field near Jeff's own house to fight

The Nazis, or whatever, with no fears.
And I think Jeff was there once when we found
A place to fight the War of Thirty Years
As bold French swordsmen on the battleground.

We sang in choir together--otherwise,
Had no concerns but where to play with whom.
We didn't know the word "metastasize"...
But faith in Jesus outweighs any doom.

Well, Jeff, I'll see you on the other side;
But wasn't being kids an awesome ride?

Third Sonnet for Carol Palin

Did you know Finland used to have a Duke?
It was a Duchy in the Renaissance.
My kulta seni Carol took a look
At Finnish history, because she wants

A Suomi persona, who can meet
Archbishop Copperfox at festival.
Related to a Duke, she'll be a sweet
Aristocrat, for whom I'm blessed to fall.

In character, I'll tell folks I was dumped
By one love, and to find a better mate,
Far off to Finland I was forced to hunt;
With my Kaarina, though, things turned out great.

The Larkspur season she will brighten up,
And help a sad Archbishop lighten up.

In Response To My Awards

Acknowledgement! Is it a sin to want
This satisfaction? Yes, when falsely gained;
Or when a true success is used to taunt
Somebody else, to see him looking pained.

Well, as for that last part, there are some creeps
Who may deserve to get their noses rubbed;
But when surrounded by my forum peeps,
I want nobody ever getting snubbed,

NOT EVEN if they're sexy-vampire fans!
Thus, I repeat the offer I've long said:
Give me some subject matter, and my hands
Will SONNETIZE your subject on this thread.

Arthritis cannot vanquish poetry
Writ by this King of Etiology!
