Sonnets Here, In-House

For Captain Holly

Our Captain Holly thinks himself un-hip;
Yet by the name he uses, I infer
That he has read the Down of Watership,
Which, years ago, created quite a stir.

Though Hazel and his comrades were not green,
They clearly did inspire our forum-friend.
He has real feelings, not like a machine;
And what he brings to friendships may extend

Someday into a sweet romantic tie,
If he can overcome what he's confessed
As his great problem--that he's very shy;
I hope in time he may be thusly blessed.

Meanwhile, he has the chance to sink his teeth
In further learning, and in true belief.

Oh yes! He deserved a poem :D That little green bunny is a buddy of mine :D

Congrats with your new lady Joe! It sounds like you found yourself a very good woman and I will hope for the best :)

Fifth Sonnet for Carol

(Yes, I said "fifth sonnet." I wrote a fourth sonnet about Carol, but it was private, going directly to her, for her eyes only.)

No iceberg lettuce when my sweetheart cooks!
Her salads, like her entrees, are superb.
Her good taste, in both recipes and books,
Shows on the plate, and in the published word.

Reminds me: there's her brother's book to read,
His history of fishing in the north.
Discussing this with Carol then may lead
To planning future times when we'll go forth

For recreation--picnics and long hikes,
Museum tours and such, with other folks
Along sometimes. And while we're seeing sights,
I'll keep her laughing with my Navy jokes.

"Inspection is outstanding!" You won't fuss
If I say that's a private joke for us.

Queenie, Bat-Bat, thanks. Yes, Carol and I are deriving lots of inside jokes from both being Navy veterans. Including from the Navy's use of condensed labels for command structures. For instance, in the Navy there is an admiral with authority over all our submarines in the Atlantic Ocean Fleet. The abbreviated term "ComSubLant" would refer both to him individually, and to his administrative office with all its functions. While Carol and I were apart during the Christmas season, and therefore were often exchanging e-mails, we pretended they were Naval memos-- between ComNavJoseph and ComNavCarol.

Sonnet No. 6 for Karoliina Aleksandra....
also known as the future Mrs. Carol Ravitts

Oh darn, my Facebook status has to change!
Well, that's what happens when a woman comes
Who's lively as a teen, though she's my age;
She's now said YES to me, so beat the drums!

More disappointments than I care to list
Have been consoled, and compensated for,
Since that fine day when she and I first kissed;
Now I'm preparing her for what's in store.

Two wives gone home before will not reduce
The love that Carol's going to get from me;
I'll go at this with Finnish kestavuus,
*
While Jan and Mary, watching, shout "Yippee!"

Let all rejoice that I shall have a bride;
There's life still on the over-sixty side!
;)

* Meaning "stamina"

Thank you, A-C. Please read old ones too, even if some of their subject matter is outdated. For instance, anything that reflects attraction to any female _other_ than my Karoliina Aleksandra, is _definitely_ outdated!

Between Love and Mortality

Good news purports to balance bad; that's true
In part, but not so fully as some say.
It's very good that Carol's mine to woo,
But one drunk driver could steal her away.

Our life is vapor, Scripture says, and I'm
Reminded of this by each day's events.
So many things could halt our Earthly time;
No wonder Carol says that I'm intense.

The things I'm still desiring to achieve;
The love of two, before it gets absorbed--
I'll ask my bride to help me to believe
That, in the small span rationed by the Lord,

I still, we still can do some things that count,
Before the bell rings and we're counted out.

So true.
In light of the impermanence of this life,
may you and your sweet Carol never take one another for granted,
and may all that should be said be communicated in a spirit of love.
May your lives demonstrate that Love is a verb as well as a feeling,
and may you discover that as you each draw closer to God
you draw closer to each other.
