Sonnets Here, In-House

Very nice Copperfox. You use your talents well to encourage others!

Thank you, Largo, and thanks to all who give me feedback. For me, encouraging others is playing the cards I was dealt. Frankly, I would trade away all my literary and artistic talents without regret, if in return I could have some kind of POWER to make an actual difference for the good in concrete EVENTS. Like being able to heal all sick people; that would be best of all. But God has always gone out of His way to keep me powerless in the face of events around me; so I perform the role that HAS been made available to me. I try to relieve sadness and promote wisdom, both because this is good in itself, and because I hope that I am helping to equip OTHERS to make a difference for the good.

I loved your sonnets for AravisK and Jack. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called Children of God.

Since I'm on a roll....

For "Victorian Lady"

A new girl here, a beauteous brunette,
Admiring Thomas More and Cicero,
Aware of Walter Scott's book Ivanhoe,
Deserves a sonnet--so that's what she'll get.

She shares my taste for G.K. Chesterton;
Loves drama (as in plays, not childish fits);
Displays in Duffer games her lively wits;
She seems like ten fine girls combined in one.

Victorian, I wish you all success
At learning the piano; and still more,
A man who, better than some lumpish bore,
Treats you like Queen Victoria, no less.

Make German apple pancakes for that guy,
But keep on reading my works till you die!

Is overstatement a characteristic of sonnets, as in, "ten fine girls combined in one"? Two I might grant you, but ten? ;)

Thank you, Copperfox. This will make me smile all day!

To The Poet Laureate

Congratulations to our own Glenburne!
Though she's been here for not so long a term,
Her skill was there for judges to discern,
So she received the prize her verse did earn.

King Lune, at once a kindly man and stern,
Was one of those her poems did concern.
She touched on many subjects in their turn,
With style for which most bards could only yearn.

Soon, even dragons on the planet Pern
Are likely to be hearing of Glenburne.
McCaffrey's rhymes don't make the spirit churn
With feeling like the rhymes of our Glenburne.

We know she's one who always loves to learn;
It shows in lines as delicate as fern.

The planet Pern? :D Thanks, Copperfox, and congratulations on your honorable mentions! (I especially enjoyed your haiku. It makes a very good point.)

To Doffen

Hello, young Viking, clad in camouflage!
A message from you, after months away,
Caused me to stare, exclaiming "Omigosh,"
As I recalled exchanging repartee

With you on subjects of much greater weight
Than Duffer stuff! Now Norway's on my mind.
I hope the Western world won't be too late
Ensuring radiation is confined

From that old Russian submarine which plunged,
And rose no more, in Norway's share of sea.
If it breaks up, I'll no more dare have lunch
With seafood caught in your vicinity.

Not many prayers involve reactor cores;
But my prayer is for life off Norway's shores.

(I only wish this _were_ a joke.)

Thank you. That's a real situation, with a Soviet-era nuclear-propelled submarine. It had a sort of mound built over it where it lay on the ocean floor, to prevent reactor fuel from leaking out into the environment. According to what I've read, the predicted endurance of this covering will expire in something like three or four years.

But of course, it is SO much more important to read about what Lady Gaga is up to.
:cool:

It'll be fun to see what the next five years will bring. Glad I'm not a fisherman! And actually, Lady Gaga is playing in Norway tomorrow, so I guess that's more on our newslist then a nuclear-propelled submarine (Nuclear; what's that anyway?! ;) )

Thanks for the sonnet, Copper. I'm honored!

For Gomesa1

Young friend of Gentle Voice, I met you once
Upon a campus, where we had a chat.
I realized, this girl is no one's dunce;
Her head is neither filled with air, nor fat.

Yet raw intelligence is not the same
As wisdom. At your age, it's not your fault,
But in some ways, you're still new at the game;
Feel free, therefore, to call on this old salt.

I've been around the block; I've come to know
That young folks have to learn the way to learn.
It's not enough to say, "No sweat, just grow;"
While growing, you must find which way to turn.

If I can help you steer your boat, then ask;
This real-life Dad can tackle such a task.

A friend complained that she couldn't get the full benefit of reading my sonnets because she didn't know the meanings of all the "inside" references to TDL members. Therefore, especially for her, I am writing a sonnet which can equally be understood by someone who knows nothing at all about this forum....

IN HONOR OF MY FIREPLACE

The yoke of paying for utilities
Is heavier than Jesus' yoke, I fear.
Thus, my pragmatic side grows ill at ease
When Colorado chills become severe.

Each day I can postpone the full-time use
Of my old furnace, means I save some dough.
I can't bear cold as well as a bull moose,
But I can gather sticks each time I go

On hikes. By any means that isn't theft,
I stock up firewood for my basement hearth,
Including logs which really have some heft.
Then, as I don a jacket, cap and scarf,

I light the fire prepared with Boy Scout skill;
For once, I need not pay to fight the chill.
