Woodrow Ackerman could not forget that three of his older male relatives had lost their lives trying to stop the vindictive onslaught of the Mintcandybarri armed forces fourteen years ago; but he could remember that, among all Mintcandybarri, the Anflaktikshok had not been the ones who pushed for genocide. And since the Earth-Mintcandybarr War had been ended by the little-understood miraculous involvement of Jack Playfair, the Mintcandybarri as a whole had shown another side of their civilization --even helping the Earth of this reality to overthrow an evil dictatorship. (This dictatorship had threatened to cause billions of humans to die of boredom, because all it could offer had been STILL ANOTHER paint-by-numbers replay of "Look out, the Nazis are back!")
Woodrow's diplomat wife had no difficulty taking a positive attitude toward the Anfilaktikshok. Many defenseless civilian vessels from Planet Braykpeddul had been wantonly destroyed by Shadything terror-ships in very recent history, and Yessa knew that the Anfilaktikshok had long fought against the Shadythings. Any slight reluctance Woodrow still felt about working with Mintcandybarri, his wife soon put to rest.
Early in their first technical discussion, Kolaklop told Woodrow, "Your excellent ship is well designed for its natural purpose as a transport, but there's no reason why a transport ship has to be COMPLETELY unable to strike back at an attacker."
"I agree in principle," said the ship's captain, "but redesigning the interior to emplace weapon stations would put Queen Yessa back in a construction slip for weeks, and I believe that both our Coalition and Captain Synthmusica's Republic want to get moving against this Admiral Skrawn in a hurry. Surely you rangers don't want to sit out the campaign?"
"Of course not, Captain Ackerman. But all ships assigned to this operation, including yours, will face at least some delay, while you try to refit them with stand-off defensive shields. My thought is that, whlle this is being achieved, we could also attach one means of offense on the EXTERIOR of your ship. Simply missiles! Eight or ten anti-ship missiles, mounted on hardpoints along the hull, and with most of the control circuitry built into the missiles themselves, shouldn't be too difficult to arrange. No one is asking the Queen Yessa to be a full-on warship; but why NOT at least let her have some teeth?"
Woodrow smiled suddenly. "I like it!"
