Jacob Mossyhutch spoke very little for his first ninety minutes touring the Aggiemarbelon; it was that different from the starships he had traveled on in his former combat career. It was a particular novelty when he could look outside from the rotating middle hull and see the planet Upsydaisylon gliding past. Aboard the station, he had known that he was in a rotational-gravity habitat there too, but he not had an opportunity to gaze out a window.
His own fascination with experiencing a gravity arrangement which his Earth had bypassed led him to have an idea.
"Captain Tilbury?"
"Yes, Sergeant-Major?"
"I don't want to be guilty of teaching a racehorse how to gallop; but have your design experts-- like Mister Kuldivan here-- discussed how this hull rotation will affect the performance of your new energy shields?"
Duzeerlim replied first: "I can speak for MY people, anyway. We didn't happen to have a stage of using rotational gravity on ships. But I'll ty to guess where you're going with this. Early spacecraft of nearly every civilization have practiced rotation of the whole ship on its long axis. This was done to equalize heat from sunlight on the hull surface. Am I close to your thought?"
"So you are, warrior. If this destroyer installs shield emitters on both sides of the rotating middle hull. then if at any time you're taking fire from one side, you would have different emitters taking turns keeping up the protective energy field. Exterior overheating would thus be slowed down."
"That's right," said Trablo. "And, at least if one side remained UN-threatened, their engineering personnel could execute rapid modular damage
repair while the stricken part WASN'T in the line of fire."
Constance Tilbury reminded them: "We mount all of our offensive weapons on the non-rotating fore and aft sections of our hull, in part because that makes aiming ever so much easier. But yes, that defensive advantage for the middle hull will be real."
