Meanwhile, back at the capital, Princess-Consort Angela had an inspiration for filling the third seat on the first-instance tribunal. Dranvalan the Antelope, still convalescing, had cause to hate the defendant Zelzil because she had shot him by mistake before killing her intended victim Blinjarda; but counterbalancing this, he had been reminded many times by Centauress Yedulia how much he owed to Grodlork and the other Satyrs who had come to his aid. In addition, the same antipathy he felt for Satyrs would extend to his not caring much that Blinjarda had perished; so, taking one thing with another, he might prove to be nicely impartial. Failing that, Angela and Oreius could simply team up to outvote him on everything.
Thus, even before King Edmund decided he would return to Cair Paravel and rejoin his enchanting bride, that bride had called the tribunal chamber to order. The Gryphon who had lately transported the now-resting Tumnus acted as an advisor to the accused, explaining her rights to her. Zelzil, knowing she could not conceal her guilt in the physical act of slaying, felt she had nothing to lose by detailing for the tribunal every real, perceived or imaginary grievance she had had against her sister all their lives. This would be followed by testimony from Vesta and Snowpelt about their examination of on-scene evidence, then by such patchy testimony as other Satyrs could give about the relationship between Zelzil and Blinjarda.
By the time King Edmund returned, the preliminaries would be nearly over--if Dranvalan didn't stretch them out too long with his outbursts about Satyrs being untrustworthy.
