Out of curiousity, do you also think Narnia is wrong? They use magic as a good thing in there. The "deep magic" is what Aslan knew that allowed him to be thier savior and to come back to life. Obviously it's not really magic. Magic in the real world is bad, but this is a fantasy world, and the magic does not involve calling on "spirits" or anything. As far as the books are concerned, the magic used there is more of a telekenisis type of thing than any mystical force. They use it to do things, but they don't like pray to the magic, or acknowledge it as a spiritual force, because in the book, it is not one.

Please don't be offended, or think I'm saying that you're not entitled to your opinion. You are, and I can see where you are coming from, and why you would believe that. I, however, have come to a different conclusion. I have a personal relationship with Jesus, and I have not been convicted that Harry Potter is wrong, I think it's a matter more of Christian freedom, and I don't want to knock what you think. Let's not argue about this on here anyway, I think there are some other threads to talk about whether you think it's bad or not. This is more of a thread for fans.

Things like this make me so darn angry! Come on, people! See Harry Potter for what it is! Look BEYOND the magic, BEYOND the witchcraft, please. There is so much more that the magic simply serves as an assistant for. Harry Potter is the essence of good versus evil, if you look at it right down to the core, and I'm sure if you looked for that in the Bible you'd be reading every verse inside of it.
 
hey gang, once again this is a thread for fans. we've got a couple good discussion threads already going over in the socratic club. let's leave this thread for simple fans.

oh, and those verses in Ezekiel are speaking to false prophets not to magicians. It might also be interesting to note that all through Daniel and Exodus, it is not said that the magicians are evil or bad just that they can't solve the king/pharoh's problems without God too.

Fawkes, thedryadhobbit was agreeing with you, it was Princess of the Bows who was dissing HP. I think Blue Stag is as good a name as any, but if anyone else has nominations, we can add a poll and vote on it.

Since this is the "lighter" Harry Potter thread, I'll weigh in to say that I enjoy the stories as a delightful mixture of a variety of genres - fantasy, mystery, and school stories. Rowling has a deft hand and a wonderful eye for plot twists. She is also extremely realistic in her portrayal of her world - it "hangs together" well, and both the environment and the characters are consistent. (As a writer of Large Stories myself, I assure you this is very difficult to do.) For my concerns (documented elsewhere) regarding the good and evil issue, I congratulate her for dealing with good and evil in a straightforward and realistic way. Her characters are not cardboard cutouts, neither are they anti-heroes. She grapples with the complexity of the sources of wrong, but squarely addresses the fact that wrong is wrong, and people wishing to follow good do not engage in it. A good example of this is Dumbledore's discussion with Draco at the top of the tower at the end of Half Blood Prince - Dumbledore understands that Draco's motives are complex, and include noble elements (the desire to save his family). This is not comic-book writing, but dealing with complex matters realistically. I look forward to the seventh book, for I'm sure Rowling will not disappoint at any level.
 
I know were probably off the HP subject but I got here late and MUST say that I am a strong chrstian I'm gonig thorugh confirmation right now, I also love harry potter, but it is not making me want to turn against God! I don't belive that reading Harry Potter for the excitement of the books is bad, but reading them and thinking that the magic is real is stupid. I think the books has morals and is not part of the occult and the Christians that read that book and turn against God were not strong Christians in the first place. I read the books for the fun of the stories and the characters, not the magic. The only magic that is used for evil is used by the villians. and Ahem, isn't the first narnia book the MAGICIANS nephew! I lvoe Narnia and Harry Potter and that's all i ahve to say!
