Gripstone gave the sparrow a glance, then gave his wife a nod. Ninecatcher and Longtail would suffice for talking with the bird; but for those who could not fly, the need to study each new section of this hazardous trail was unchanged. So Gripstone continued past the cliff-rooted tree where the sparrow had settled, giving all his attention to checking for safe holds...and to listening and smelling for danger.

NPC Sparrow

OOC: It, or she, rather, is indeed a white-throated sparrow.

The sparrow preens herself, then bobs her head in an almost formal greeting. "Well, and of course I can speak. Why, whatever did you take me for, dear? One of those dumb beasts, oh, I have no doubt of it, and a terrible thing 'tis for them, to be sure. And only last week I saw one of the poor dears, did I not, practically perishing from the cold. It was a right shame, it was, and such a pretty color too. These are dark days indeed, as I always am saying to those who will hear, and shouldn't we all."

The trick may well be getting her to /stop/ talking once she's begun.

Ninecatcher

"Well do I know that these are evil times. But not by chance; the times are evil because of a person who _delights_ in evil. We tigers are called by Aslan Himself to take such actions as we can _against_ this evil. Being thus called and commanded, we must at some point have faith, and assume that what seems a helpful event, IS a helpful event, willed for our benefit by the Great Lion.

"Therefore, gentle songbird, we choose to believe that you are a friend. We cannot prevent you from flying away and reporting us to our foes; but we choose to believe that instead, you will report things to us. First of all: do you know if this mountainside path continues all the way into Narnia? And if so, does it join the Great Pass, or does it emerge in the north separately?"

Longtail (yes, my resolve was pretty short-lived)

OOC: I am actually researching their abundance in TN right now. They happen to be the research subjects of the class I am failing. They are facinating birds: two morphs, not gender-linked, and they preferentially pair with one of the opposite Morph. I started counting them a little too late in the semester though because they are now moving back to their summer habitat in Canada. By the by, as I wrote in the Comings and Goings thread,. I am back.

IC: "Well, I guess it is now obvious that she is a a talking bird.... Pardon me ma'am, what direction have you just come from and where are you going?"

Ninecatcher said nothing about Longtail asking new questions before her own questions had been answered. If this bird would answer ANY question, it would be better than nothing.
