Scrubb was introduced for the very first time as a horrid little boy named "Clarence Eustace Scrubb....and he deserved it!"
CS Lewis went to great pains to explain this naming business. The school where Jill and Clarence went had very liberal ideas about raising kids and was down on the use of Christian names precisely because they were religious in origin. Many people blame religious doctrines for the ills of society.
That was almost a foreshadowing of the "attack on Christmas" issue that was so bitter in the US in 2005, you know--"Happy Holidays" vs. "Merry Christmas" or "Christmas Vacation" vs. "Winter Break."
Society must...and will...remake itself from within and will oppose any sort of order forced upon it from without. The only genuine change happens when people spot in one another's eyes some missing piece of the puzzle of existence. When people see themselves...their own terrors, joys, loves, disappointments, dreams...reflected in others and understanding bridges the gap between souls, between communities and between nations and races.
I grew up in the 1960s when everyone had an opinion on how to fix the world. 40 years later it has not been fixed. If enough of us try to fix ourselves, then the world will improve from within and we'll be better for it that we did it ourselves.
