Why is Eustace's Name Changed?

It actually says near the end of the book what it is - CS Lewis says how, for the first time, Pole called Scrubb by his first name, and vice versa, and I think it says in brackets something like 'for they never called each other by their first names at school' or along the lines of that. Go to near the end, read it, it's there :)

At the end of CS it says they called each other by their "Christian names" which (as the person above me stated) means first names. So, his name wasn't changed at all the people on abored the Dawn Treader were not used to calling people by the las name. Jill/Pole Eustace/Scrubb, were.

I think it's because in VDT he wasn't the main role, but in TSC he is pretty much the new main character, so he transforms from just Eustice to Eustice Clarence.

Just my theory..

It actually says in the beginning of VDD that "His parents called him Eustace Clarence and his masters called him Scrubb." I can't beleive that Jill is his master, though

Scrubb was introduced for the very first time as a horrid little boy named "Clarence Eustace Scrubb....and he deserved it!"

CS Lewis went to great pains to explain this naming business. The school where Jill and Clarence went had very liberal ideas about raising kids and was down on the use of Christian names precisely because they were religious in origin. Many people blame religious doctrines for the ills of society.

That was almost a foreshadowing of the "attack on Christmas" issue that was so bitter in the US in 2005, you know--"Happy Holidays" vs. "Merry Christmas" or "Christmas Vacation" vs. "Winter Break."

Society must...and will...remake itself from within and will oppose any sort of order forced upon it from without. The only genuine change happens when people spot in one another's eyes some missing piece of the puzzle of existence. When people see themselves...their own terrors, joys, loves, disappointments, dreams...reflected in others and understanding bridges the gap between souls, between communities and between nations and races.

I grew up in the 1960s when everyone had an opinion on how to fix the world. 40 years later it has not been fixed. If enough of us try to fix ourselves, then the world will improve from within and we'll be better for it that we did it ourselves.

It actually says that they call each other by their last names at the experiment school. So they refere to each other the way they always did at school.

I was thinking back on the books today, and I was thinking about the characters in the book. When I came to Eustace, I realized that his name was "changed" from VDT and SC. His name had always stayed the same ("Eustace Clarence Scrubb" Chapter One, first line ) However, in VTD, he was called Eustace by his ship mates and his coisins, while in SC, he was mainly called Scrubb by Jill.

Why did CSL do this change?

The only thing I came up with was CSL wanted to show the change in Eustace from VTD to SC. But then why didn't CSL show this change after he was turned into a dragon in VTD?
Well, CSL not totally changing Eustace's name. His last name is Scrubb, so maybe Jill calls him Scrubb because that's really all she's ever known his as. It wasn't so much as a name change, it's more like being called by the last name as apposed to the first name.
Example:
If your name was Bob Parker, but people called you Parker instead of Bob, then that would be like Eustace Scrubb, but everyone calls him Scrubb.

I don't think there was a hidden meaning to Eustance being called by variations of his name.

My name is Austin Furey.

I'm most popularly reffered to as Auzzey, Austie, Furey, Furious, Auz-wald (No idea where this one came from...).

I don't think there was a special meaning for the different names.

-Austin

I think it's more of a school thing too...you know that Jill and Eustace went to a very particular school, and that's how they told them to refer to each other - surnames, that's why Jill called him Scrubb.

In Narnia, however, they called him Eustace because they all are, in a way, like a family.

yah. it's says somewhere in the book that they call everyone by their last names at the expirement house. another thing, one of the bullies, at the end of the book is called by her last name. So he didn't really have a name change, it's just frrom differnet points of view, like in VDT it says that his parents and teacher called him Eustace Clarence Scrubb.

I assume you understand this now, but just in case: Masters means teachers in this context.

Towards the end of Silver Chair (right after Rilian killed the Emerald Witch I believe) "Scrub" and "Pole" address each other by their "Christian" names ,as Lewis puts it, Eustace and Jill for the first time. I think that this represented that they had come to a new part in their lives. They had passed through their trials and come up triumphant, and in so doing gained a new identity if you will. Eustace changed once after dragon island in order to make him strong enough for the trials that he would face rescuing Rilian. Likewise, the rescuing of Rilian made the both of them strong enough to rescue Tirian and aid him during the Last Battle. In their old identities Eustace and Jill were not strong enough to help Tirian, but as their new selves they were.
Sorry if this doesn't make any sense, it's a thought that's hard to convey with words.

No, that's sort of wrong!

Ok, no, that is wrong, his full name was Eustace Clarence Scrubb, not Clarence Eustace Scrubb...... Check in "Voyage of the Dawn Treader"!!! It's true!

I really can't believe I'm the first to mention this, but the answer is staring you all in the faces. Eustace and Jill called each other "Pole" and "Scrubb" because at school they were used to using surnames, not forenames. :p

It was exactly the same at my school a generation later. It wasn't until about the sixth form that we got around to using first names at all even out of school.

Lewis changes Eustace's name to Scrubb because in his school they didnt call them by their christian names..they called them by their last names..it says it in the Silver Chair
