Partway back to the castle-or-whatever-it-was, Vissarion had the feeling of being watched, though not by one of his demonic foes. Seeing no one near in any direction (and right now there was no cover near for anyone to stalk them at close range), the swordsman perched Ivan on his shoulders to look behind them from a higher elevation.

"I see them!" said Ivan. "There ARE people back there, though I can't make out any details."

Vissarion set his comrade carefully down. "Good, or I hope it's good. After our minds are set at ease about the others inside the maze, we can make a fresh attempt to contact those people outside. And since we are going back indoors, let's see if there are closets where you could borrow some warm clothing for your next outing."

"Who needs warm clothes? This is warm enough. I remember when all I had was a pair of pants."
He started walking again, singing quietly to himself.
"So, Vissy..." he said in an attempt to make conversation, "How do you think we can find the others?"

"Stop what?" Pyralis asked.

"The self loathing or whatever," Jade said, "it makes things complicated." Jade having been a commander of a league of star ships hated when her people of rank considered themselves "a bother" or "in the way." No matter what task she assigned them they still felt out of place. It was annoying to have to try to assimulate them into the family unit a star ship crew created. Sometimes it even affected the death toll on the ship. Jade hoped that this Pyralis girl would pull herself together.

Vissarion took Ivan at his word, and took back his cloak.

"When we get close to the castle-or-whatever again, I suggest that we study that side of the exterior from which we emerged. Look for other blocked-off windows like the one I broke through. If we find some, and I can get at them, I'll break them open too. The people we were with are interested in finding a way out; if they feel the colder air coming in, they may follow the draft. We'll be watching the openings to see if they appear. If no one comes OUT by sunset, we'll go back IN and look for something to eat."

Meanwhile, in its incorporeal state, one of the demons who had the feud with Vissarion was observing at a distance the other humans. So many of its kind had already been slain by Vissarion that it had no desire to try attacking a party which included at least THREE powerful antagonists. But maybe someone would wander away from the others again....

"If you dont want to be a bother," Jade said, "stop it."

"What is she reffering to Darron?"

Darron looked at the others, bewildered. "I don't know; I'm just as confused as you."
Kate raised frightened eyes to look at them. "Darron, if the violin breaks -"
"I know, Kate. I wouldn't let anyone break it! But you have to tell us what's going on."

Ivan felt a bit chillier without the cloak, but said nothing. He poked at the frayed hole in one of his elbows. He'd been wearing it for so long that it would be odd to wear something else.
"But if we go back in...how will we know if we can get out again? Trail of breadcrumbs? Or maybe find some more super-powered chicks. Maybe we can find one with a GPS in her head.
In any case, I'm only interested and getting them out. I don't want to travel with them forever. Once they're here, I'm sure they're capable of finding thier way home. I wish I knew where we were, though. You have any idea?"

"I'm afraid I can't offer navigational advice," admitted the scarred man. "I had all that taken out of my hands; God simply told me I was to be sent someplace where there were deeds for me to do. I do hope it isn't His will to leave me here for very long; my bride-to-be, Shamleth of the glossy brown skin and glossier black hair, waits and pines for me. And yes, by the way, I _will_ hit you, just mildly, if you make wisecracks about her cheating on me in my absence. I am faithful to her, and she to me.

"As for finding the crowd you were with, some daylight still remains; perhaps they will poke their heads out before we give up and go back inside."

"Don't worry, Vissy. I must admit, I don't understand sentimental junk like that. I had a friend once who travled a thousand miles to save a daughter that almost certainly had died. I also once knew a kid who was willing to dash into a building where there were heavily armed gaurds, just to try and find a girl he'd only talked to once. And then I had to save them both, at great risk to myself. But, of course, you'll notice I'm here now alone, so you can guess how that turned out." He sat down to wait for the others.

Kate bit her lip and glanced behind them as she were afraid that someone was following them. Then, she looked up at Darron and whispered, "Darron, he's following me."
Darron only looked more confused. "Who is, Kate?" Suddenly, he realized what she was talking about. "Are you certain?"
Kate nodded. "Yes."
Darron looked angry. "Unbelieveable," he muttered.

Darron shook his head. "No, everythings not alright. We may have more than just those monsters following us around now."
Even Lisbeth looked confused. "What on earth are you talking about?"
"Lisbeth, the prince is following us."
Lisbeth looked startled. "But what does he want with Kate?"
"He wants to get back at me; and I guess hurting my sister would be the best way to go about it."
"He is such a skunk," Lisbeth hissed. She hated Darron, but she loved Kate like her own sister.

" Who what now?," she asked, pulling Rji down to her back " Sorry but I think you most stay on my back for now," she told him.

Raj nodded. "Okay. As long as Cheese is here, I'm happy. Cheese says he's happy too."
"It's a very long story, Jackie," Lisbeth said. "What we can tell you is that the countries that we come from are pretty much in a state of complete turmoil, everyone is fighting everyone else for power; and some people will do anything to get the kind of power that they want. That's pretty much why we're being followed, again....." She wished again that she could be back home with her family and that everything would be perfect again.....

"Political power," Darron said. "Everyone wants to be in control of everyone else; and when that happens... well, you end up with a big mess on your hands."

Ivan had located one other bricked-up window that was reachable enough for Vissarion to break it open. Shouting into the interior once this opening was made produced no response; so Vissarion withdrew to where he and Ivan could observe both new and old exits.

The sun, which seemed just a little bit larger than the suns of their respective native worlds--and whose transit of the sky also seemed slower--was well down toward evening by now. If no one peeked out either opening fairly soon, the two men would give up waiting and would re-enter the castle-or-whatever-it-was.

"Well," Ivan said impatently, "I hate waiting. Let's go, locate the others and lead them out so I can continue my wandering.
He peeked through one of the windows. He thought he heard a growling noise comming from somewhere nearby, inside the castle-building-thing.

"I think there's Monster-thing there, Mr. Vissy." He dug into his pocket and pulled out the pebble. He threw it through the window. There was an inhuman cry of pain, and he just barely had time to jump out of the way as another "Monster Thing" appeared at the window.
Ivan unsheathed the dagger, and stabbed at it. The creature screeched and shuffled off from the window, leaving a trail of blood.
"I think it's safe now, Mr. Vissy." he climbed up the the window-sill and pulled himself into the building.

(Just to show that the things are not pushovers)

Ivan was barely in the window before the same demon, which had momentarily gone ethereal, rematerialized and seized him, rendering him helpless. "Think you are clever, human insect?" it hissed. "Your little sting will be repaid with--"

But in focussing on Ivan, it had forgotten the greater threat. It was reminded too late, as the redbearded swordsman vaulted in the window and made a stab with his sword. Needing to avoid hitting Ivan made the thrust less damaging to the monster than he would have preferred; but the monster's counterattack, while wrenching the embedded sword from Vissarion's hand, freed Ivan to get up and recover his knife. As Vissarion was fending off attacks with his pickaxe, but having a hard time staying untrapped by the tentacles, Ivan had his opportunity to strike a more substantial blow.

Between them, then, they finished off the demon. Vissarion saluted his companion with his retrieved sword. "Thank you for the assistance; in appreciation, I'll overlook you calling me Vissy." But the tall man's tone showed that he was not seriously annoyed by the nickname.
