The Dawn Treader “deserves” to do better!

Hollywoodtoday.net just posted an article about this weekend’s Box Office scores, and while The Voyage of the Dawn Treader topped the box office with $24.5 million (being released in 3,555 theaters), they said that it fell pretty flat of the opening weekends of both LWW and PC. However, they also said that “If ever a film deserved to have done much better it was this, and the tragedy is that with such low response in the US, it could be Sayonarnia to the whole series after only 3 episodes.  America, wake up!  This is great family entertainment….” You can read the entire article HERE.

It’s  pretty clear that so far, the movie is not doing very well overall in the Box Office. However, the vast majority of reviews are quite positive about the movie and recommend that everyone should go see it! Also, the reactions of the general public who have seen the movie are also extremely positive. Check out @Telmarine ‘s Twitter, where he retweets tons of tweets from people who have seen the movie.  He has retweeted more than 1,100 fan reviews! I personally think that almost everyone who has seen the movie liked it and would recommend it to others; it’s just that not enough people have even heard that the movie is out! So, what can you do about it? David Sutton has some ideas at his post 10 Things You Can Do to Ensure Narnia 3 is a Success.

So go, bug your friends, take them to watch the movie. You should also take your enemies, as Douglas Gresham told us to! And remember, the movie still has a good chance of gaining a lot of money over the next month. Just look at Tangled, its earnings improved by 50% the second week it was out just through word of mouth! So go spread the word. =D

Trivia: If you go to Google and type “Voyage,” the very first auto-suggestion is “voyage of the dawn treader.” That’s a good sign!

First of all, I'm a Christian. Second, I love Narnia! I've been reading the books ever since I was little, and I've been following the Narnia fansites ever since the LWW movie came out. You might know me as The Bulgy Bear. I'm homeschooled, and I'm the oldest of five children.

  1. I’m a student and december is just a really busy month for us, exams coming, papers, ect. And I guess many teenagers/students all over the world are in the same case right now, just wait christmas break and it will already be better!

  2. I’m sorry to say that I didn’t manage to go see Dawn Treader this weekend. However, as much as I love Narnia and have been anticipating this movie since the release date was announced, I have finals this week and my priority is with my schoolwork. Sorry, Narnia!

    • No problem, I understand! Thankfully, my finals were all finished on Thursday, so I was able to go watch the midnight premiere right after my finals. It felt like a treat. =D

      • Lucky you! I’m in the same “ship” with Kathy. I will being seeing the next weekend.

          • But at the same time, I think the vast majority of people liked it. =D So just go in there with an open mind.

Patrick, some of my friends didn’t like it, but more liked it than didn’t. And even those that didn’t like it still recommended that people go watch it. So it’s pretty even. =D What did you think about the movie?

  3. come on, peeps! let’s pull a how to train your dragon and kick some butt (how to train your dragon initially had poor box office results and is currently in the year’s top ten films, although dawn treader could kick it off if it gets enough).

  4. Well, the weather most likely DID attribute to this, especially in the Midwest. Some people were saying that there was bad weather at LWW’s opening weekend, but this time it was very bad. In Minnesota, highways were actually closed, we got sleet, and snow pretty much all day. And now there are actually snow drifts up to my chest, and I’m 5 foot 5 inches at least. Plus you also add the bitter cold. Besides, it will probably get better when Christmas comes.

    • I live in Minnesota too. But I live north of the cities, so I didn’t get any of the weather.

      • Ya. My friend who was gonna see it on Saturday (in Kansas) couldn’t go because of the snow. I myself was trying to get friends to see it last night, but no one even thought of going because of the icy roads LOL. Oh well. There is always today and the rest of the month :P.

    • Even in Australia there has been flooding, many people have been flooded either in or out of their homes, and hence lots of fans that would have generally seen it will most likely not have seen it yet.

  5. I am really worried about this too. I saw it today in 3D and there were hardly any people in the theater. Yet, when I went to see Prince Caspian 2 years ago, the theater was packed!

  6. Wow, are people REALLY that shallow and ungreatful? I mean honestly, SO WHAT if the US didn’t do as well? The total for WORLDWIDE is what counts. There is no purpose of blaming a country because of it’s money amount for the world. As long as it is making something and has the amount of money it has made already since it’s release. Also, people REALLY need to stop comparing budgets to the last films. They are the same of the series but completely different movies as well as Dawn Treader was. I’m sorry, just venting a little because I hate how people are so greedy, like Walt Disney was which is why they had to be idiots and drop out of the series. Thank GOD Fox took their place.

  7. It’s good that Dawn Treader does well worldwide.
And Americans, go and see it! Money isn’t everything, but if another Narnia film is to come, this one has to do well. It hasn’t come to my country yet, but from what I hear the film is good. I’m looking forward to seeing it!!

  8. Looking at the IMDB Box Office tables, VODT is #1 for this last week in USA and not even in the top 10 for UK! Come on Everybody!

  9. Let’s be fair to ourselves. I live only a few blocks from a tiny theater with extra low prices, but I’m tight money wise. Yet I decided as soon as I saw Caspian that if I only saw one it would be Dawn Treader. But between weather, ticket prices at the big movies and the economy there are plenty of reasons that a person might not make the theater opening weekend.
If they don’t keep making these based just on opening weekend sales, they need a reality check. This is a series, and I’ll bet it does great in DVD sales. I know I’ll want it. Of course, sometimes that’s the problem: people figure they will just wait for the DVD and don’t realize how much awesomeness they will miss. You don’t get a life size Aslan even on a big screen tv.

  10. Went to go see it with the family and was disappointed (kinda) in the story. The movie itself was well done. The actors were great, animation was great. The problem was that well the original two movies hung to the book a bit better, the studios felt the need to compromise the plot of the book a bit much in order to fit in a few more action scenes. Anyway, they tried to make right a bit in the last scene of the show but it still lost some of the point by that time.

Hope they continue making the series as it has a great message and is a good series of books.

  11. I agree. VDT deserves better and I think the holiday and word of mouth will help turn it around.

The two friends I saw it with were non-readers and liked it. Sail on VDT! 🙂

  12. I already watched the movie twice. I loved the special effects and the actors. But they changed the chronological order of the islands, there are things that didnt happen they way the book explains them. Like Rhince was in the ship before they got to the Lone Island or Lord Bern was not in the dungeon, he buys Caspian. Over all I loved it and I hope they continue to make the rest of the books into movies, but I just wish they would make to more like the books.

  13. Maybe it’s just me or my area but i thought the advertising for Voyage was POOR! I only ever saw one commercial on tv and that was a couple days before its release.

  14. I went and saw it Saturday. The movie was enjoyable, but as soon as I saw how they changed the escape from slavery scene I knew they strayed too far from the book for my tastes. Are they really so arrogant to think they can improve on a series that has stayed the course to become classics? Or do they think “we” are so shallow to need it full of action for it to “sell”?

Maybe they need to remember other classics that didn’t have much/any action. Can anyone say “The Old Man and the Sea”?

Years from now the book will still be a classic… This movie…Not so much.

I purchased the first two DVDs on release day, to show how much I liked them. I will purchase VDT the first week it’s been released, but certainly not on release day. Please get a clue Fox. Make the rest of the series true to the books and you will have winners, that will be purchased for years to come. Fox, you can even salvage this movie by recording scenes accurate to the book, replace the action packed garbage, and release a “pure” version on DVD. Track the sales of the “movie” version vs. the “pure” version and learn, once again, that we want to see the book, not just a movie with the same title as the book, on the big screen.

  15. i’m a real narnia fans 🙂 i like narnia since the first that narnia have made . and i love william moseley and skandar seanes :)) love it very much :*
