M. Night Shyamalan took a look at Directing Narnia

If you know me, you know that one of my favorite directors is M. Night Shyamalan. Unlike many people, I’ve loved all of his movies with the one exception of The Happening. The rest, though, I love each for many reasons. In a new behind the scenes video for The Last Airbender, which is the first of a trilogy based on the Nickelodeon series Avatar: The Last Airbender, he mentions that he had been looking to find an epic series that he could direct. He mentioned looking at Harry Potter, which is well known, and also The Chronicles of Narnia.

It makes me wonder what a Narnia film directed by M. Night Shyamalan would look like. He is a very visual director and he’s a great director with children. We can only imagine what it would have been like. Not to mention that the composer he works with, James Newton Howard, is a musical genious. His score for Narnia would be epic and magical. Now he is focused on The Last Airbender trilogy of films as well as other original projects, so it’s unlikely that we’ll see him direct any of the future Narnia movies.

  1. wow! that would BE SO cool if James Newton Howard did the music for VOTDT (although I know he isn’t going to.) That would also be cool if he did the last of the narnia series!

  2. That would be awesome.
The Village and Lady in the Water are a few of my favorite movies. He’s one of my favorite directors (although I won’t see this new movie because I don’t really like stuff like that.)

  3. I feel…glad that he didn’t do Narnia, for some reason…maybe I’m unfairly biased.

  4. Well, if he didn’t think the fit was right, then he probably did the right thing. I could see him doing the Silver Chair, which is darker than the others. Good luck to him whatever he does.

  5. Yep … I’m a fan of his work. I liked the Happening .
It would be a very interesting approach to Narnia … would love the chance to work “With” him.

    • I didn’t hate The Happening by any means. I just don’t care much for scary movies. The one thing about it that I didn’t really get was that usually his movies have a supernatural element and also contain some sort of great moral to them that can be learned. The Happening seemed to be devoid of that, at least on the single viewing that I had. I own all the rest of his movies though.

I think you should work with him. I hear he’s a really nice guy, and have it on good authority that he’s shopping around a new supernatural script to do before he starts on Airbender 2.

  6. It’d be even nicer if Peter Jackson directed a Narnia film. I’d love to see him do The Last Battle

  7. Haha, that would’ve been awesome and a little odd (granted, I’m saying this when Adamson of ‘Shrek’ directed the first two… and that didn’t end up so badly). I love The Village and I’m a huge fan of Shyamalan. But yeah… Apted feels like a much better fit to me. And I’m with you on James Newton Howard all the way, but the Narnia soundtrack (especially the first) is nothing to sneeze at. Gregson-Williams did a brilliant job as far as I’m concerned.

  8. Well it sounds like The Last Airbender turned out to be another absolute stinker from M Night Shyamalan, so it sounds like excellent news that he stayed well away from Narnia!

Perhaps M Night should just be content that he once made 2 or 3 good films – Unbreakable, Sixth Sense and (at a push) Signs – and just quit the filmmaking business altogether.

  9. Good thing he didn’t, otherwise it would’ve turned out horrible just like “The Last Airbender.”

WHY M. NIGHT?!?!??! WHY WOULD YOU TAKE MY FAVORITE TV SERIES AND TURN IT INTO A HORRIBLE MOVIE WHY?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! D:

    • I hope this doesn’t ruin my credibility. I liked the movie. I didn’t think it was horrible at all. I didn’t LOVE the movie, but I didn’t think it was as bad as many did. (Check out response at both MNightFans.com and LastAirbenderFans.com on the front pages and the forums, if you’d like to learn more about it.) I don’t believe that Night would have made a horrible Narnia. I have a complex explanation for it that I’ll sapre you, but it comes down to the fact that Night DID write the screenplay for Stuart Little (based on a book).

  10. I don’t think it would work for him to do vodt but I think he would be good for the last battle
