Sonnets Here, In-House

To my Postman:

Through rain and snow
And sleet and hail
You deliver my mail
And I wish you to know

That today I’ve got you on my brain
Because it’s after four
And you still haven’t come to my door
So I wonder if you’ve gone insane

But you wrote it for the regular postman because you thought he was being late. So I'll say show it to him and tell him why you wrote it. I think he'll like it.

FOR PAUL MARTIN

With software and conventions, and the news
Of movies and museums must he deal;
Besides the forum, he displays the views
Of writers from the world that we call real.

As Rangers kept the Shire alive and free,
Without most hobbits even guessing this,
Our Specter must inspect and oversee
The infrastructure--while we, in the bliss

Of ignorance, enjoy the site each day,
Not seeing how the Specter's efforts merge
With all our fun; still, he directs the play,
As he's directed actors at a church.

Coordinating each and every Mod,
Paul consecrates the cyberspace to God.

Wow, that was awesome. Thank you so much. It's absolutely excellent and really captures what goes on behind the scenes.

Poem I just wrote..

Boy

What are you doing here, boy?
Did you think it would be fun?
Did you think that your weapon was only a toy?
Did you know how to use that gun?

Why did you come here, boy?
Were you drawn in with stories?
Were you told it was a joy?
Were you told lies of valiant glory?

And where are you now, boy?
Lying in the mud-
Did you know it could destroy
You, and cover you with blood.

Boy, where do those eyes gaze
What can they now see?
Those eyes that stare off in a daze-
Those eyes, that stare so vacantly.

Boy, who did you leave at home?
And did your mother cry-
When you set off, this world to roam,
Underneath a pale blue sky.

And Boy, did your father cheer,
And wish he could be with you.
Do you know what secretly he feared
As you set off under the sky of blue?

Young boy, did you have a brother
Closer than a friend-
Boy, was there another,
A girl who you swore to live until the end?

Little boy, here comes the rain
Dark clouds now hide the sun,
These drops cannot erase your pain
Even if this war is won.

My boy, what are you to this war
But a face without a name
You knew not what you fought for
But you lie here all the same.

Just so you know, Bethany, America's soldiers DO know what they fight for, they do NOT think the guns are toys, and they know it DOES make a difference whether the war is lost or won.

This is beautiful. I dropped a tear on the keyboard of my computer. See Ginny, your puppy is preciously protected in Heaven, and you can be sure he's safe over there, and he can look at you, and see how much you still love him.

Thank you sooooo much Copperfox for writing this sonnet to our friend.

xoxo Pauline

Back to sonnets, you want? Okay....

FOR GINNY'S PUPPY

"Both man and beast Thou savest," says one Psalm;
So I'm not out in left field when I say
That there's no reason dogs can't go to play
Where they'll be petted by a nail-pierced palm.

Ginebra, my sweet pupil in the South,
Says that her darling puppy Byron died;
This means he's romping on the Other Side,
Where angels toss the frisbee to his mouth.

My sister Ricki lost a cat, and this
Helped her see: Heaven kept her treasure there.
When you, Ginebra, breathe in Heaven's air,
I'm sure you'll also get a puppy-kiss.

If some ask why, I'll say, "Why NOT let beasts,
Who never sinned, share in eternal feasts?"

---- "Professor Joe"

Just so you know, Bethany, America's soldiers DO know what they fight for, they do NOT think the guns are toys, and they know it DOES make a difference whether the war is lost or won.

When I wrote this, I had in mind (among other things) books like the Red Badge of Courage, where the main character really had no idea of the seriousness of it... I didn't have any war in particular in mind when I wrote it,

but I had this mental image of a kid about sixteen or so lying in a muddy trench, his gun by his side, and an older (slightly cynical) soldier talking to the dead body. I dont know where it came from, but it wouldn't leave..

And I do belive that most soldiers do know what they're getting into. And it certainly matters wether we win or loose. But how much can victory matter to a dead kid who didn't understand?

FOR POWL

A silent movie, "Perils of Pauline,"
Would put its heroine through dangers great;
The audience would shudder for her fate,
Then breathe relief upon the rescue scene.

In our community a girl is known,
Whom all would wish to safeguard and protect:
One who addresses elders with respect,
And writes well in a language not her own.

Our Powl, out there in Africa, has friends
Of every color; here too, by the score.
As pretty as a global girl-next-door,
She's worthy of the wish my sonnet sends.

The wish is for her safety, and indeed,
For God to send her all that she may need.
