    Heres the best way to use gradients.:D
    Create a new layer over your picture.
    Now choose a gradient,and drag your mouse across the picture from one side to the other.
    Now go to your main page of gimp,and click File>Dialogs>Layers.
    Click the drop-down bar,and choose Screen or Overlay.(Whatever works best for the indivisual picture)
    Fade the opacity by clicking the bar beneath the drop-down bar,and shoving it to the left.
    Hope that makes sense!;)
