  • Oddly enough, even though I lost some rigorous skill and technique, I think my playing matured anyway. I think if I got my technique back now I'd be better than ever, because I have an even stronger sense about what to "do with" the music, (shaping, touch, etc.) than I did when I was younger. Of course it takes good technique to be fully in control, though, haha. :) I have also taught piano on and off since high school, and that actually provides some insights on unexpected things as well. I have also experimented more with impromtu stuff and sight-reading (when one loses real time and effort, one actually seems to improve at sight-reading!) in the past few years.

Anyway, it's nice to meet you! Welcome to TDL! Though I've been so low-activity for so long that I feel kind of silly "welcoming" anyone. I was much more active...once upon a time... Sigh.
Oh yes, I know all about years of theory, and Bach, though from almost the beginning I hated lesson books, and I think I quickly wriggled out of them, and got my teachers to allow what I considered "real" music. I was a funny kid. :p I was also lucky to have teachers who were willing to let me move that way. And I know about intense teachers wielding wild threats and hauling my "best" out of me whether I liked it or not. Of course I liked it, except when I nearly died of it. Like I said, I was very serious in high school, but decided on a different path for college, so it is just recreational now. That's actually kind of relaxing, and definitely fun. Of course I'm not as technically strong as I was then and would have been if I'd gone for a piano performance degree, but some of it actually does come back with practice. (surprise! :))
Hey! I don't remember if we've met and you just changed your name, or if I don't know you. I've been around for a long time, but I'm largely inactive right now. Good thing I decided to swing by and check in, I guess. I think I started playing piano when I was about seven, so if you count my entire life from then on up, I guess that's fourteen years. I didn't get really serious for the first year or two, and in college I regressed a lot as well, though. I considered going to college for music, but decided against it. The effect was that I lost a lot of my skill. I've gotten some of it back since I graduated, but I'm certainly not nearly as good as I was at the end of high school. I guess that's just the way these things go. I still love it, though! How about you?
I'm holding off responding to Farynn until we see if Lava wants to do anything that would affect you and me.
I once had a good walking stick that I made myself from a chopped-off branch in a brush pile. I went on hikes with BOTH my now-deceased wives using that stick; it carried fine memories. Unfortunately, when I was using it part-time in my first season with the Colorado Renaissance Festival, some bypasser stole it while I wasn't looking.
I am so glad you are enjoying ES' story. He, and his creativity, never ceases to amaze me and I have had the honor of knowing and loving him for four years. You will hardly ever find a better writing mentor. Blessings to you! www.narniahome.com has MORE---LOTS MORE!! lol!
You'll come to see Phaedrus as a very complex character before the story is through. He's one of the more interesting characters I've ever created.
