That's an experience I rather wish I could have--reading the LotR for the first time when old enough to really understand it. I'm glad you did decide to read it! There are so many who see the movies and don't bother with the books...and never understand what they've missed. I agree with you on the impossibility of making movies which match everyone's personal vision of the books...although there were many changes made which went far beyond that. Changes to the plot, or worse, to the overall values inherent to the story bother me far more.
You're right, fanatic does sound better. I generally avoid it because of the connection to 'fan,' which is a term I don't care for, even though I love NF! Do you like to write? I have to ask--most people don't think about choice of words that much (or if they do, they don't tell me about it ).
