Suddenly Sherdac drew a long rattling breath, and his eyes rolled back into his head. Lief shuddered, he knew Sherdac was dead, but he couldn't, wouldn't except it. He ran his hand over Sherdac's chest, feeling, in vain, for a heartbeat. There was none. He felt for a pulse at his throat, and his wrist. Nothing. Sherdac was gone.
Lief slowly, and carefully picked up the body, he stumbled with the weight, but got to the side of the road, where he laid him, with the hope the body wouldn't get trampled. Then he pressed the tip of his sword against the palm of his left hand, and pressed down, cutting deep and long. "I swear, Sherdac," He whispered, making a fist with his hand, the blood already oozing from between his fingers. "I will avenge your death."
