European football cup!/Congratulations Nederlandse!

This is not really an EC with surprises. Yes, the first round had some surprises but both Germany and Italy are still there. Italy has to survive against Spain first. I feel sorry for Oranje but nothing more. And I'm happy for Guus. He doesn't need to prove himself. He is awesome. Still I think germany is going to do it. Although you will never know against Turkey. Why are people so childish??? In my street the people were angry and some even started to call the turkish names. It's just a game people!

Not many surprises? Well, Netherlands beated both Italy and France, that was a huuuuuge surprise. Germany being beaten by Croatia was kind of a suprise. Rumania not losing from Italy and France was a surprise. The fact that Russia came this far is certainly a surprise, and the fact that Turkey beated Croatia was a surprise too! I definately think this EC has many surprises!

Lieke..I said except in the first round. We have beaten both Italy and France and yes, germany was beaten by Croatia but Italy might still be there after tomorrow and Germany already reached the semi-finals and Croatia was sent home by Turkey. So if Germany defeats Turkey and Italy defeats Spain and then Russia, the final will be Germany - Italy and that's not a big surprise to me.

Not many games have been played since the first round, Vanes, and of the three games that were in fact played, two of them were a big surprise (Turkey beating Croatia and Russia beating the Netherlands).
If the finals will be Italy Germany that wouldn't be too much of a surprise when you thought about it beforehand, but after the first round it would be a surprise for me. I think Spain is going to beat Italy.

Turkey and Russia are surprises, yes. But the others aren't. Not even after the first round. Italy lost against Netherlands but recovered soon. Germany won the first game and lost the second but won again the thirth game. No surprise to me. But maybe it's more because Germany is a team with fighters who won't give up. They have not shown their best performance yet but they have the spirit which Oranje missed today. And Russia is a very young team with a lot of talented players. But this is my opinion of course! Hey, I'm not even a football fan at all but I loved to talk on this topic with all of you. It's sad for those who really hoped to see their country win and especially Oranje was unbeaten after the first round but were smashed down (Doffen..hey, hey :D) in the second round. I hope Spain will defeat Italy. But I do feel happy for Guus. Hats off to Russia. If they continue like this they might be able to reach the finals and who knows? Maybe they will become the European Champion!

Definately hats off for Russia, a fair winner, they were.

I'm definately wondering what Germany will do, yes. I don't think they're going to win, but hey, i also didn't think Russia would get this far  Germany Turkey will be interesting indeed!

And I work at a Hotel with mainly german guests...............................
The guy at my floor (older couple) was excited when Germany defeated Portugal. But he expected Germany to be throw out next round

It is fun to read the reactions. Some players didn't expect themselves to be thrown out by Russia. They thought it would be tough but they thought they would get through. I wonder if people will support Russia because of Hiddink.

When you have that attitude, that's when you are in more danger of losing because you tend to underestimate your opponent. Sometimes people think that they can win just by "showing up" and not having to make an effort. I am not saying that any Dutch player was thinking like that, but they were close. You have to have respect for every opponent, especially at this level of competition.

Guus Hiddink is a Dutchy too:D He did many things for national football, or team football, and now he's coaching Russia.

But i don't think they underestimated the Russians, they said that they knew that they were very good players. Afterwards everyone (all the players and the coach) said that Russia deserved to win, as they did. They were far better than the Netherlands, so that's fair to say.

Michael....I know what you said but did you really have to say this 6 times? :p:D

Yeah, Guus Hiddink is a dutchy. He is one of the best coaches. When he became coach of the national team of South-Korea he brought them far. I believe semi-finals. And now he brought Russia back on track. Russia used to be in the finals in 1988 and after this it didn't go well for them but thanks to Guus they are finally counting again. Because Guus put together a very young team with spirit. Even Van Basten was not surprised the russians won. He said he expected the 1-2 more sooner. The winning mood wasn't there. The dutch guys missed the spirit they had before. Maybe they expected to win? Some did. Some said openly they expected to win. I don't think they had an attitude like "Russia? oh...piece of cake!" but they might have thought to easily.

I still think Germany is going to win and I have no objections against it. The Germans never give up easily. That's the spirit. Even when they are 0-3 behind they try to do everything they can to get the best result. Germany against Russia or Spain. I do hope Russia.

Sorry Netherlands! We were watching the game with a bunch of Holland fans on the Dutch island of Bonaire, and it was just sad!!! Everyone was depressed afterward.

Now though I am going to cheer for Russia, since they have the Dutch coach.

*Hugs Inky*!!!! Yeah, Guus Hiddink is dutch and I am proud of him. He is such an excellent coach.
Yeah well, I kinda expected Holland to win. It's sooo stupid. I expected Holland to lose in the first rounds and then they won. And now in the quarter finals...
Well they LOST.

I was expecting them to win but they lost. It's sooo sad for Van der Sar (for wasn't this his last international match)? But heh... didn't I say myself it is a team sport. ;)

Well next time better, though without van der Sar. Hmmmmm.... I really don't know :p.

See ya all later.
