Concerning Davey Crockett

When he was in the U.S. Congress, Davey Crockett witnessed the earliest beginnings of a welfare state, as legislation was proposed to use taxpayer money to provide pensions to certain persons. Crockett argued that the members of Congress should give THEIR OWN money to people in need, sooner than take citizens' money by force and call themselves generous for doing so. I realize that conditions were very different in his time, but his emphasis on private charity first was not a bad thing.

Oh.. good a french speaking members related to Crockett ! Too bad we can't speak french i this french forum :( well, I wished you may be could tell us more about him and the family, as I only know what the legend tells.

twen
uh, well i know that he is a great something uncle. my great something grandfather was his brother Samuel. His family came from a part of France were there were lots of hunters and woodsmen. my great-great grandmother's last name was crockett. they changed the pronounciation of their last name when they came to America. i think the spelling used to be crockette, maybe. anyways, he was in congress and he died at the alamo as many others did fighting the Mexicans for texas. i don't remember the odds but it was really against the defenders of texas. basically everyone who fought died. oh, and he really couldn't grin a bear down. i don't think. but yeah, i think that's all i know. i have a family tree showing our relationship.

Yep, I'm here also.. just pm me. Just know that I don't look at the forum on a daily basis, but I would say once a week, and answer all post and pm at once. Don't ask for fast answer at first. Or ask Angie :p

?!
Cuz u think I spend my whole time here?
:D
Yeah, though I'm not posting a lot, I spend most of my free time being online (when I'm not working for school or helping my mum cuz my dearest dad and sister don't... Sorry, had an argument with my dad a few minutes ago cuz I didn't do the washing up today as I have a life and I was at my friend's), and I do not mind helping people with french, lol.

I didn't see anything wrong happening here yet...
Me neither, but I guess it was in some other threads.
But I do not mind using my english nor my french.

I speak French, but not very fluently. I've been learning it from young in school, but since we don't get to use it a lot, my French is quite choppy. Right now I'm doing French 30, which is the highest level of French that can be done in high school, at my school, at least. However, I would really like to learn much more because after meeting some French people this summer, I realized how little I know!

You know, I've been learning english since I'm 9... I'm 18 now, and I still have some difficulties to be understood sometimes (especially after midnight :D ). The most difficult thing isn't learning a language, but using it. I know what you mean by "I realized how little I know", but at least you know a little, and I don't think that with my 9 years of english I'd say I know a little of english... Just that I know enough to get good marks, that's the only subject my parents do not care of since I'm 14, unless they can get rid of me for a week or two .... But no more than that (somehow, words like "one year", "trip" and "North America" can't be used in the same sentence whenever my parents are around).

But if you need some help, you know what to do ;) (even with a ton of work I still have way too much time on my hands :D )

lol! It seems that everyone includes a midnight/twilight saying when they reply to me. Ha ha. :p

It sounds like you know quite a lot of English, more than I know French. In Canada, French and English are the two national languages so I guess I feel like I should know at least some amount of French! I really want to visit Paris one day so I can put my knowledge to use. ;)

Thanks for your very kind offer! I'll be sure to keep that in mind! :)

Will not include a m*******/t******* today (I didn't say it!!! lol)

You know, realized two days ago that my sister wasn't able to speak correctly english, though she's been learning it for 6 years now.... She was making mistakes such as "I have 16 years old" instead of "I'm 16". I mean, that's one of the first things we learn here!
Been learning english for 8 or 9 years now, so I guess I'm able to be understood, but it's not enough (IMO) to have a good conversation, as I'm often stuck between my ideas and the translation. And I don't think I'd be able to speak english correctly (that one's entirely my fault, I have to speak during english classes but I'm too lazy :D ).

Oh yeah, I've got that one down by now. Same with 'you're right' and stuff like that. It's hard, though, to have to remember all the verbs in their correct agreement with the noun!

Oh no, honestly, I think your English is good! :)

Yeah, french is really difficult as you have too many ways to say the same thing....
eg: How are you?
you can either say in french: Comment vas-tu? Comment tu vas? Comment ça va? Ca va? Comment va (mainly used in msn conversations, but written like that: cmmt va?, lol)? Tu vas comment?
.....
And the list goes on.
Or the pronounciation is kinda the same with some words, just like : mère, mer, maire.... or Verre, vers, ver, vaire
And sometimes some words are written in the same way but do not mean the same...
eg: couvent
there's 2 meanings of "couvent" in french... a noun and a verb....
Just wanna see who can tell me what are the meanings of this word :D
..............
If you want a clue, think of "Sister Act" for the noun and chicken for the verb....
