kisses in children's/teens literature

I just recently read the "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" series and thought that the romance there was just right. The last kiss in the series (and one of the only ones) was really sweet - and who doesn't want to be kissed under water? :)

Good point.
HP OoTP the other night on TV, I had forgotten about Harry and Cho's kiss under the mistetoe -- it happens in the movie and the book if I am recalling correctly. That was kind of cute.

This is a bit old for children's but I read it pretty young...

The last bit of Mystic and Rider by Sharon Shinn

And then he kissed her, and that was the end of it. No more pretending no more holding back. Life changed by love, life sparkling now with it's own peculiar magic. He tightened his hold and let the transformation take over. When he lifted his mouth from hers, he knew, he would be a different man.
He kissed her until the world was changed, and even that was not long enough.

My fave is from mag's fanfic, wildchild.:D

“I- I don’t know what to say.” She whispered.
“You could say you’ll st-“ He was cut off as she reached up to kiss him. Which, after a second of surprise, he responded quite enthusiastically to.
At last she pulled away, and he grinned at her, looking mildly awed.
“Or, of course, you could do that.”

Oh i love that kiss! I was never good at writing them but I'm sure I've got a good one somewhere....
ahh here it is

"HEY CASPIAN! GIV HER A KISS!" Caspian and tigerlily stopped whispering and looked up shocked. Then jack and yelding joined in. "GIVER A KISS!" They yelled. Finally the whole bottom table was aroused and yelling "GIVER A KISS!"
Tigerlily, now very smitten, Took Caspian's face in her hands and kissed him.
Caspian pulled off with his eyes very wide and excited at the thrill of this.
"susan was NEVER like this!" he thought to himself as he kissed Tigerlily back

My absolute favorite YA kiss was in a book series.. A set of them called Christy on the front.
It was the sweetest thing, new years night, after the girl began to think he didn't care about her that way anymore. On her way home, they got out of the boy's car right there in the middle of the road and he kissed her just as midnight approached, giving her a golden bracelet right beforehand. Aww!

Okay, since I am currently MADLY in love with the book Brightly Woven I thought I'd put in the two kisses in that book. I very much love how sweet, short, and not-detailed the author makes them.
Also there's a TON of more casual kisses (ie. forehead, cheek, hand) between the two characters before this and it's just *melts*

But yeah.

The tent flap banged open. I brought my head up, and there was Wayland North.
I was on my feet in an instant but he had crossed the distance between us in two long strides.
"What-?"
He pulled me to him, grasping my face between his hands. And then he was kissing me, kissing me so deeply, so fiercely, that I could feel my toes curling in my shoes. The world spun away and it was just the two of us.
Then it was over. North sighed deeply, and there was that heartbreaking half smile of his, the one reserved for times of failing hope.
"I'm going to need," he said, "a lot of luck."

And then much later. One sentence.
"Let's get out of here," he said, and when he bent down to kiss me, we had the time to make it last.

I'm just gonna leave those there. And swoon in my hopeless romantic corner.

I haven't seen that movie in awhile, but I remember not liking that scene. :( Knowing that Harry ends up with Ginny, it's always depressing for me to see him chasing after Cho. I never understood why he was so obsessed with her. :p

I don't like kids kissing in either books or films. To me, it is another way of forcing them to grow up too soon.

Now, in the case of, say, Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe, their kiss at the end of (the movie) THe Sequel was perfectly fine because she was 19 and he was 22 or 23. But I don't like kids kissing. The kissing between Hiccup and AStrid in How to Train Your Dragon nearly crossed the line for me because they're way too young to know what love is or means (kiss on the cheek might be permitted....maybe).

I better vamoose before I get myself into any more trouble. :p

LOL! Your not getting yourself in trouble here. that's what the battle field (MN thread) is for :p ;)

I think they meant Adults/ Older teens in books aimed at the 16 and under reading level.

I love that one! Isn't there a line that goes something like, "And it was pretty much the best underwater kiss ever"? I also like one earlier in that series when they're in the volcano and Annabeth kisses Percy for luck.:p

I like the kiss between José and Nora at the end of The Horse from the Sea, even though it's sad.

Does the Lord of the Rings count?:p If so, Faramir and Eowyn's kiss is one of my favorites.

Possibly my absolute favorite is in Disenchanted by Chisha92.

It depends on the time period for me. If you've got 15-ish aged girls kissing in olden times or in a sort of fantasy world setting that's logical - that was, truly, when they were to be married and doing all that stuff.

But in a lot of modern teen literature when it's going into kissing and things, it sort of bugs me. Unless the characters have a lot of chemistry/have been through a lot/really understand what love is or means.

technically, 16 and younger can be looked at as "children's", and personally I think it's ridiculous to have children kissing. Can we sexualize them any more than they already are?!

As for favorites, I honestly don't read books with children OR young teens kissing....though in movies like Anne of Green Gables, clearly I approve of that. ;) But books, not so much.

I agree that children should not be sexualized, but Kissing in children's books are relatively innocent. 90% of characters that kiss are adults, or near adults. the other 10% are children who do it as "johnny gave me a piece of cake, and I'll give him a kiss like mommy does daddy." The only other aspect of Children kissing, is books from the turn of the century, where It was still considered a gesture between friends. Oz did this and Peter Pan did this. Pretty much all others are some form of puppy love-- never anything lustful. It's natural for children to copy adults in the way we behave (playing mommy, or fireman), but I don't think that many people are stupid enough to even consider letting their child get a book Titled Sally has an affair with Johnny and his cousin . Plus, I (having worked as a Librarian) have never seen Necking (aka making out) in anything but a YA title. YA is more guilty of this , but that is expected in the audience (13-18).

I don't like it when people kiss in books or movies, it ruins it for me. Mainly because in movies the kisses are like extremely long and I have to close my eyes. I don't like the end of the 1st Ranger's Apprentice book as much as I should because of when Will and Alyss kiss. Just, why? The only time I will ever let anyone kiss me is when (and if) I get married. Kissing is just... weird to me. haha, thoughts from a 14 1/2 year old.:p
I think the only kiss(es) I don't avert my eyes from are in HTTYD, because you blink and they're over. xD

I wonder if a writer was the first person to come up with kissing... I mean, how the practice got started. Then some romantic person thought it was cool and it spiraled out of control....*sigh*

LIKE LIKE LIKE!!!!

I'm saving my kiss for my wedding day. Not everyone feels that way, but I really hate kissing between children and teens. Not only do I feel that it's wrong, but also that it makes young readers feel like THEY are inadequate. That it's normal, right, and expected for them to do the same.

The romance between Hiccup and Astrid was the worst part of the movie, if you ask me. (Or my mom. :p) I hated the way that they sexualized her. It wasn't necessary or helpful.

I didn't like AStrid in general, to be honest. She got on my nerves.

Might I even ask about Suspian's kiss? :p

*runs and hides before the fight starts*

I thought she had the potential to be a cool character, but it didn't work. She was too sexualized and too much like a feminist ideal.

Don't even start. :p But really, I vehemently deplore that part. It was unnecessary. And it was STUPID! *tapes duct-tape over mouth before going further*
