Mod Q&A Thread II

Someone mentioned the quote threads, so I did a quick search, and here they are:

searched all quotes thread, none are really confined to Narnia, but there are a few for C.S. Lewis:

and while someone is merging quote threads, it may be a good idea to do something about these:

Books: http://www.narniafans.com/forum/showthread.php?t=22630
QUote of the Day: http://www.narniafans.com/forum/showthread.php?t=18898
Funniest quotes: http://www.narniafans.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5719

Lord of the Rings: http://www.narniafans.com/forum/showthread.php?t=23751
Dr. Suess: http://www.narniafans.com/forum/showthread.php?t=23637
Pirates 3: http://www.narniafans.com/forum/showthread.php?t=18575
Real Life Funny QUotes: http://www.narniafans.com/forum/showthread.php?t=27651&highlight=quotes

I suppose it's better not to merge those with specific topics (Dr. Suess!), and I am strongly against merging the "real life" quotes, but I figured I ought to post it just to be fair.

Thanks Lossy for your help in keeping things on the Dancing Lawn streamlined ;) I merged the C.S. Lewis threads right away, but need some time to sort through the other links in your post to make sure the size of the merged threads won't be too unwieldy. If a thread gets too huge it could cause things to slow down on the forum or perhaps even crash. That is why really big threads are broken up (like the 100,000 post thread). Also, as you pointed out before, threads that are more specific should not be merged with a general quote thread.

Spam "members". We try to stay ahead of them, but it's hard to keep up with them all. We appreciate your spotting the spam entries so we can chase them down.

I see we've got our little "reputation" thing back... (the green/gray box under location and posts...)

How does it work? And what does it mean when it's green? Or when you have a couple green boxes?

Hi Lossy
great question...! Remember folks wishing they had a "Like" button to push? Well that is how reputation works. When you read a post that you really like, click the little icon that looks like scales in the upper right hand corner of the post, and a Reputation box will come up, and you can add to that person's reputation. (You can also detract from someone's reputation if you really disapprove of how someone is posting.)

This isn't important, really, I'm just curious... Is there any filter for the reputation messages? For instance, if I went around liking every single post I could find by a particular user, regardless whether they were actually meaningful, would they all count for their reputation?

On the other hand, if I went around disliking perfectly good posts, what would happen? Would the person have a bad reputation even though they didn't deserve it?

Note: I would never do either of these things. I'm just using this as an example. ;)

Also, is there any way a person can find out who liked (or disliked) their posts?

I'm curious how do you get to be a mod? Is theres a specific voting for the ones who got like 1,250 or 2,780?
I'm looking at rules and FAQs to answer your question. ;)

8. Q: How Do I Become A Moderator? (Mod)

A: Write thoughtful, meaningful, and polite posts and threads. Know the rules, and follow them. (ie DON'T SPAM!!) Keep a cool head when talking to other members, especially if they are new or if you have a different opinion then them. Other then that, there is nothing more you can do. If you are mod material, Specter will find you, not the other way around. Enjoy your time as a member and one day you too may be a mod.
This is from the FAQS.

Don't ask to be a mod, recommendations are welcome. The mods were chosen specifically by Specter, the administrator of this site. Occasionally more mods are recruited, other than that...leave it be.
This one is from the terms of use.

1.) There is a filter of sorts: You can't just go around "liking" everyone's posts. The system will only let you like peoples' post whom you have not already liked. It will not let you re-reputation people you have already given some to until you have first "spread some more reputation around" (the amount intended by this is quite uncertain, though perhaps others have figured out its cryptic meanings). And yes, if you give someone bad reputation (or good) and they don't deserve it, it is stuck with them. Red reputations will stay that way until someone else gives them some positive reputation. I think the mods and Specter would prefer that we members not simply be frivolous with the reputation. Receiving a positive rep can really mean alot to a person, just as much as a negative can hurt someone's feelings.

2.)Unless people sign their reputation comments, it is often difficult to guess who they are from. But, half the fun is receiving reputation from someone you don't already know and who is just really impressed by your posts.
However, there are ways of guessing who they are from (though this method may be highly inconclusive). One way is to go to your lasts post and click on your own scales. If that post received the reputation, it will tell you. Then you can just think about the types of people who may have read your post. :)

Hope this helps :)

Ah, that makes sense! :) Thanks, Fernie!

I'm not sure if this is true for all members, but when I click on CP (control panel) on the top menu bar just under the heading next to the Flashchat button, I can see not only the comments I made that were given reputation points, but also who gave what comment. If this works for general members as well, it is much easier than trying to click on each post you've made to find out what other TDL'rs are saying about you.
