I know but sometimes people say they'll do something but end up not doing it.
Tristan watched from the gate as the door swung open and Loralei came running out. She didn't notice him and carried on running. He began to question his motives and why he had opened his big mouth. She looked distraught and he hoped she wouldn't do anything stupid.
She knelt down by the pond and felt her cold tears as they dropped onto the back of her hands. She sat still all kinds of questions running through her head. She had mixed emotions. Loralei was angry, angry at Tristan for telling her, angry at her parents for not telling her. She felt betrayed, alone and confused. All this time she had thought she was James and Sarah’s daughter but now she felt like she didn't know where she belonged. She leaned over, edging closer to the pond. Loralei looked at her reflection in the calm and still waters of the deep pond. 'Who was she?' From anger and frustration she hit out at the water and her own reflection. She must have leaned in too forward for Loralei felt herself falling into the pond and before she could do anything about it she fell, head first into the water. The pond wasn't as deep as it appeared. On her way down she hit her head against one of the rocks that was settled at the bottom.
Tristan saw Loralei fall into the pool but thought she had let herself fall in on purpose. When he saw her body floating on the surface, face down, he realised something was wrong. He quickly ran over to the pond. Her body was lifeless and not moving. When he was close enough he realised there was a very distinctive red splurge of colour around her head. It was spreading at an incredible speed, mixing with the murky green/blue colour of the pond. He stepped into the pond and placing both hands under her body he turned Loralei around to reveal the wound that the blood had escaped from. He stepped out of the pond cautiously. Loralei's face was losing colour and she was losing a lot of blood too.
James and Sarah sat in their kitchen trying to figure out how their daughter had found out that she was adopted and how they would deal with the matter when the front door was suddenly flung open. Sarah stood up immediately with a look of horror on her face when she saw Tristan carrying an unconscious Loralei.
"What happened?" she asked running towards them, James following closely behind.
"She fell into the pond" Tristan explained.
"We should get her to the hospital" James remarked grabbing his keys.
"No!........It's not a major cut. She just needs some stitching and plastering"
"But she needs medical attention" her mother replied.
"I can do it"
"Are you a trained Doctor? No. We're taking her to the hospital" James replied angrily about to take Loralei from Tristan’s arms.
"I can't let you do that" he replied in a stern tone. " Listen to me by the time we get her there she would have lost too much blood. Trust me it's better this way, for everyone" he insisted with an authoritative tone.
They both looked at each other and without realising it they found themselves agreeing with the 17 year old and even leading him upstairs to Loraleis room. It was like they had no control or say in the matter anymore.
Tristan gently placed Loralei on her bed. Her mother changed her into dry clothes. When she had left Tristan entered the room again. He did exactly as he said he would. Stitched up the slightly deep cut on her forehead and placed a plaster on top.
It was hours until the colour began to reappear on Loralei's face. Tristan insisted James and Sarah stay downstairs until she had regained consciousness and surprisingly they agreed. He sat on the chair next to Loralei's bed and watched her. He knew she would wake up eventually and he also knew that he would be the last person she would want to see but nonetheless he wasn't going to leave.
Loralei sat up suddenly and coughed out some pond water. Tristan didn't even so much as flinch as Loralei practically sat unexpentantly and spat water practically at him. He didn't say anything but just wiped the small sprinkles of water that had managed to get to his face.
She suddenly realised that he was sitting there, staring at her. "What are you doing?"
"Saving your life........again"
"What? What happened?"
"You fell into the pond. I suppose that’s to be expected when you sit that close to an open pond and then lean in even more. It's like you wanted to the water to swallow you up"
"What? You think I fell in on purpose?" she asked angrily unaware of the cut on her head.
"No of course not but you should be more careful"
"It's so weird. I've never fallen in before"
"Well there’s a first time for everything"
"No. I definitely didn't fall in........someone pushed me"
Tristan tried not to laugh "you really are stubborn. I saw it with my own eyes, you fell in. Just admit it"
"No......I'm being serious. Before I fell I felt......a force, someone pushing me" she insisted very sure of herself. Tristan thought back. He had been paying o much attention to what Loralei was doing he hadn't really been looking out for anyone or anything. Maybe she was telling the truth.
"Anyway it doesn't matter now nothing does. You were right.......I am adopted, happy?"
"No. I didn't mean to cause any trouble between you and you’re.."
"Sarah and James. There names are Sarah and James"
"They are still your parents Loralei"
"Well you've changed your tune" she replied harshly. "They're not my real parents, I'm not related to them at all and in my books that means that they have lost the right to be called parents" she replied.
"I'm sorry"
"It's a little too late for apologies" she replied trying to hide the hurt in her eyes "and if you don't mind" she added lying back down and turning to the side so that her back was facing Tristan.
"Sure" he mumbled and got up. He wanted to make sure she was okay and now that she was, well kind of, he would go. He had forgotten to tell her about the cut but figured she would find out sooner or later.
Shortly after he left Sarah and James entered Loraleis room. She heard them walk up the stairs, open the door and enter. She was fully awake and aware of their presence but kept her eyes closed.
"We should have told her" James said speaking first. "She had a right to know".
"I know" Sarah replied in hushed tone "I just.........I didn't want her to think of us as anything less............we're still her parents. We might not be related by blood or have similar features or have the same genes. But we cared for her, let her into our home and loved her isn't that enough?" she asked almost in tears.
"I know Sarah........"
"It was selfish, yes, but I don't want to lose her James. She's all we have..." James placed a comforting hand on Sarah’s shoulder "everything will be alright. When she's awake we'll all sit together and talk about this........like a family" he promised. Sarah wiped her tears away and nodded. She kissed Loralei on the head, right next to where the plaster was, and walked out of the room.
The door closed and Loralei assumed that they had both left. She opened her eyes. She hadn't really thought about how this was affecting them. She felt guilty and terrible for how she had reacted but in all honesty she couldn't help it. She touched her forehead where Sarah had kissed her. She felt the plaster also. Loralei sat up in her bed still touching the large plaster that had been placed onto her cut. 'Had Tristan forgotten to mention something?' she asked herself getting out of the bed. She walked over to the full length mirror and looked at her reflection. She moved her closer to the mirror and started to peel the plaster off. Judging from the plaster she must have cut herself pretty badly so Loalei prepared her for the horrifying wound she thought she would see. She blinked continuously when she looked at what was underneath the plaster. 'That can't be right'. She touched the wound, or where the wound should have been. There was no cut, no scratch not even a slight bruise, nothing. It was like she hadn't even cut herself. The only thing that would make her realise that she had was the blood stain.
Loralei shook slightly completely freaked out by what she saw. She quickly placed the plaster back over the supposed cut. She stepped back, away from the mirror. She decided that even though she really hated him, he was the only one that could explain what had happened.
Loralei quietly opened her room door. She glanced up and down the hall to make sure Sarah and James were not upstairs. She closed the door again and slowly walked down the stairs on her tiptoes. She stepped back when she saw James walking into the living room with two cups of tea. She waited a few seconds until she was sure he had entered and was sitting down until she hurried to the front door. She opened it and quickly turned around, looking at the living door. She thought they would have heard the front door opening but there seemed to be no movement at all so she walked out and closed it behind her.
