There was a lot I liked about The Force Awakens. Visually, it was immensely superior to the prequels. I'm glad they didn't over-do it in this movie. There were not five lightsaber battles in this film nor was their a villain using four lightsabers at once. Back to basics.

Hey, I liked General Grievous! And I'm a fan of the lightsaber battles...

But I agree with the visuals. It probably helped that Abrams firmly decided to use as many 'real' props and sets as possible instead of relying on heavy green and blue screen techniques. I think it made the film look differently overall.

I will say the movie was very dark though, which was disappointing. I didn't like that. Dark in obvious and in subtle ways. Lines like "Look how old you've become" and "A magical power that holds good and evil together" certainly aren't guiding principles for those of us who are Christians, but probably reflect the attitudes of a lot of people these days. Anyway...

RotS was pretty dark in its themes, though. Dark in the obvious: yes, agreed. I didn't necessarily like that, but I didn't feel like it was any darker than RotS. And the whole "magical power" stuff...that's been in every Star Wars film/book/game/comic/tv series in some form or fashion. No, not a guiding principle and I don't buy into it, but it's part of the SW universe and the magical power/Force will always come into play there. Rogue One is going to be a lot darker (looks grittier, really) so we'll see how it shapes up to the others in the franchise.

Oh, it was also confirmed by Jimmy Smits that Bail Organa WILL have a small cameo in Rogue One! I'm excited for this, especially since RO will take place shortly before Ep. 4 and I want to know what Organa's exact role was in getting the Death Star plans!

I loved the attention to detail.

Some of my favorite moments were:

the opening shots (and the final shot too)

when Poe and Finn first escape in the TIE fighter and swing back around and it blends right in with the enormous First Order ship

Takodana (is that what Maz's planet is called?), it's approach from the jump from light speed, although the planet looks a little TOO perfectly green/blue

The lightsaber fight! The beautiful detail, like how Rey sees a blurred red and blue of Ren and Finn fighting when she becomes conscious again and the reflection in her eyes of the swords when she is fighting Ren.

What would you think if they made her a Kenobi? It's a long shot, and honestly I don't see them going that route, but imagine if a Kenobi ended up becoming a villain. Of course, I'm still hoping we'll see an Obi-Wan film made in the near future, and that Ewan will return to reprise his role there. That shouldn't come as any surprise, however. :D

YES GIVE US ALL THE EWAN. I've been jonesing for that too and would watch the socks out of that movie (but then again, no surprise either lol).

Have you guys heard the Rey Palpatine theory? Pretty sure it's mostly crack, but it's also interesting to consider.

I agree with JOB that Rey could turn into the villian. Look at how she fought Kylo on Starkiller. Girl was angry. Ep VIII is going to be a bait and switch, y'all.

The lightsaber fight! The beautiful detail, like how Rey sees a blurred red and blue of Ren and Finn fighting when she becomes conscious again and the reflection in her eyes of the swords when she is fighting Ren.

Also, when Kylo Ren was standing on the bridge with Han — the half blue, half red lighting on his face was genius.

A) this is why we're friends. We agree on the Ewan! :D

B) I haven't heard that theory; links? I've heard multiple, including the Rey/Kenobi theory, as well as Rey being a reincarnated Anakin ( ), but the Palpatine one has not crossed my pinterest feed yet.

I swear I think the people who write those really in depth theories have far too much time on their hands. :p

Hey, btw, I don't think I'm currently friends with you on Facebook (a while ago I had to delete my old one and I think I lost several friends along the way)! Message me, k? :)

One thing that actually disappointed me in TFA was that the planet The Death Sta...I mean Starkiller base was that it Wasn't Coruscant. It looked like it, down to the letter. Then I found out it was just Hosnia Prime. Some random brand new world. While I'd hate to see Coruscant destroyed, my initial reaction when I saw that was sadness, because of the connection to Coruscant via the prequels, The Clone Wars TV show, and the "Legends" novels. To find out itw as another planet that just looked like Coruscant, would be like doing a big disaster movie and instead of destroying New York City, it's just Jersey City...and they made it look like NYC.

And...really...another Death Star? ( I'm with Captain Solo on that one.) Thankfully, the First Order is not a legitimate form of government, so unlike the Empire, they can't raise taxes to build another on, or Emperor Palpatine can't sign an executive order saying, "It's my birthday! I'd like another Death Star."

Finally. Luke just running away and going into hiding because his nephew went evil? I feel all of Luke's character development and heroism went out the window .Sure, you can say the same about Obi-Wan but look at it this way.
While it is true that both go into hiding when an apprentice goes bat-guano crazy, Obi-Wan had the entire government actively trying to hunt him down and kill him. Add to it he lost his best friend ( as well as several other friends), his entire religion, his job, and his whole way of life, the man essentially became a wandering Ronin. His reasons for hiding are understandable. Plus, Kenobi was following the orders of Yoda, and focused on his mission to protect Luke. Further, the EU ( both new and old) establishes that while in hiding he still protected the innocent, and fought for the cause of justice albeit in secret, like the Ronin he is.
Luke however, had a sister IN the government he could have worked alongside to help end the conflict earlier. The First Order, unlike the Empire, was not a legitimate form of government but a fringe group. They had no real power. Instead he goes to some isolated planet to stare at rocks. Then again, Luke does seem to display some of his mother's heart, and considering her fate, perhaps it makes since that Luke ran away.

Now...on to the good...Star Wars Rebels is introducing Thrawn! I enjoyed season 1, I'm waiting on pins and needles to see season 2 when I get it on DVD ( can't wait to see Ahsoka and Captain Rex again.) Hopefully this means Mara Jade will become canon again, as will her relationship with Luke. ( In fact it would add a good explanation to why Luke left. His nephew murdering his wife did kind of cause him to later gong out into the galaxy with his own son in search of...so...yeah pretty much his book story). In fact it wouldn't surprise me if we don't see her. Dave Filoni has ben actively trying to have her on the show, he's said what a huge EU fan he is, so much so that one of the abandoned ideas for the Clone Wars season 7 ( it didn't even make it past a concept stage) would have seen...a Yuzaan Vong scout.

And ...Rouge One. Honestly, I may be in the minority, but I'm more excited for this then I ever was for TFA. I've been waiting to see this story since, well Attack of the Clones! They haven't told the story of the Rebels who stole the plans for the first Death Star. ( this isn't the Bothan spies, remember) Plus, it's awesome that one of the Clone Wars characters gets to be in live action. Also, not only is Jimmy Smits back as Bail Organa, but the actress who played Mon Mothma for the deleted scenes in ROTS will reprise her role as well.

As for Rey theories...put me in camp Kenobi. The fact that he directly calls out to her in her force vision has to be deliberate. Details are kind of sparse on how Force Ghosts work, but something tells me they seem to follow the same rules as traditional ghosts in that they "speak" to those they have a connection to, or appear at a place they have some tie to in life. Further, the Star Wars saga is at it's core about Skywalker and Kenobi.

And I need an Obi-Wan Kenobi stand-alone trilogy between ROTS and ANH. Ewan wants to do it, the fans want it.... for Lucasfilm to not do it is like saying no to money.

Also, somewhere down the line I'd like to see Marvel do what Dark Horse with The Star Wars ( a graphic novel based on the original treatment for the first Star Wars film) and publish a comic book based on George Lucas' original treatment for the sequel trilogy. If for no other reason then fans can see what "might have been" .

I'm with you, I'm way more excited for this than TFA. I think it's because it's bridging a gap between 3 and 4, and it's what fans have been wanting since Ep. 3 came out! And yes, I'm super excited that some Ep. 3 characters are back, as well as introducing a Clone Wars character to the wider SW audience. So many SW fans discount the Clone Wars/Rebels as canon, when in reality I think (at least for CW) they add more to the universe itself.

*another nod in agreement* YES YES YES! I don't just WANT an Obi-Wan trilogy, I NEED it! I'd love for them to bring in either Siri or Satine, especially since we know he was involved with both at some point (a beef I still have with Filoni is that he never brought Siri into the Clone Wars series and I was rather miffed over that!). But, even if a trilogy is an impossibility, I could settle for a single film.

Oh, for sure on Clone Wars and Rebels. One thing I loved in Clone Wars was that through Ahsoka we got hints that Anakin and Padme would have actually been pretty good parents together. We also got to see what Obi-Wan meant when he told Luke that Anakin was "a cunning warrior...and a good friend." Like I remember watching ROTS after finishing the Clone Wars series and the goodbye between Anakin and Obi before Obi headed off to Utapau was actually much more sad after getting to see the two together in their prime. It's part of the reason I couldn't get behind Kylo Ren as much, as I got to know so much more about Anakin to make his fall to Vader more tragic, and his redemption more...awesome.

I hoping after Rebels finishes that Filoni and Co. will do a "Star Wars: New Republic" cartoon to bridge the gap between ROTJ and TFA. Plus, it's one of the only other ways Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher could reprise Luke and Leia as younger then they were in TFA.Say, set it five years before Kylo Ren went evil. ( maybe even see Han and Leia actually...ummm...happy and married before they were all depressed and grumpy and split up. That said, it was nice to see in TFA that the two of them still loved each other.)

I got to wonder if we won't get that single film. I did read that Ewan was having some private talks with Disney that they were not allowed to leak to the press. Now, while he is voicing Lumiere n the live action Beauty and the Beast, it doesn't strike me as the kind of project they would swear to absolute secrecy. Marvel and Star Wars are the only two properties were they joke that if they say anything, "They'll send their ninjas after us."

Now, a further thought .While I will admit that I liked TFA, one thing I felt was missing was the whole "fairy tale" analogue that the characters from the first six films had. After all, Star wars, at it's core is a fairy story set in space. So far in those first six films we had:
Luke: The Farmboy
Leia: The Princess
Han: The Pirate
Chewie: The Pirate's "Noble Savage" First Mate
Threepio: The Butler
Lando: The Baron ( c'mon his title at the Cloud City was "Baron Administrator" and he had a castle in the clouds)
Obi-Wan: The Wizard
Yoda: The Elf
Padme: The Queen
Qui-Gon and Mace Windu: the soothsayers. ( one predicting a boon the other doom)
Jar-Jar: The Fool
Darth Maul: The Devil ( I took a class back in college on the Grimm Brothers Fairy tales and it was not uncommon for the devil to be an adversary for the heroes)
Jabba: The wicked king. ( usually always depicted as obese and slimy in fairy tales)
Boba Fett: The Evil Sheriff ( think the Sheriff of Nottingham trying to catch Robin Hood.)
Dooku: The Count
Vader: The Good Knight Under an Evil Enchantment ( remember in fairy tales only love can break those pesky things).
Palpatine: The Evil Wizard
And
Artoo-Detoo-The genie: Think about it...how does Luke get the message from Leia to play? He's cleaning the droid and as he does, he is rubbing it. Much like how Aladdin in all of the stories first frees the genie. Also, in the first six movies Artoo always makes three saves at the request of the heroes ( with his third "wish" in ROTJ being interrupted. Leads me to see him carrying the where abouts for Luke as completing that "third wish")

So far all I can come to is...Maz Kanata: The Old Crone.
Rey: The Peasant Girl ( think Cinderella)
And...that's about it. So far. Hopefully VIII and IX can flesh out those fairy tale aspects of the new characters.

I always thought that SW was more of a spaghetti western or a samurai film in space.

Rumors are going around that Rogue One will not have an opening crawl. Thoughts?

Clone Wars made the prequels more three dimensional anyway. Padme was one character right off the top of my head I'm thinking of, not to mention how they fleshed out characters only glimpsed in the films (i.e. Plo Koon, Luminara Unduli, Barriss Offee, Aurra Sing, etc.)

I hoping after Rebels finishes that Filoni and Co. will do a "Star Wars: New Republic" cartoon to bridge the gap between ROTJ and TFA. Yeah, what was up with the whole depressed/split up thing? I haven't read many of the EU books, (or Legends, as I guess they're now known), but to my knowledge Han and Leia stayed married even throughout losing one son to the dark side and I think their 3rd child died. It'll be interesting to see what they do with this stand-alone Han Solo film. I'm still not sold on it, but when I first heard about Rogue One, I was skeptical at the beginning as well.

I got to wonder if we won't get that single film. I did read that Ewan was having some private talks with Disney that they were not allowed to leak to the press. I agree. I don't think Disney would keep so mum on something like Beauty and the Beast. Marvel and Star Wars (and maybe Star Trek, if we're talking secretive) are the only two properties hot enough right now to warrant not leaking anything out.

In response to Warrior, it wouldn't surprise me if they removed the opening crawl. After all, Rogue One, the stand-alone Han Solo film, and likely others are intended to be separate from the trilogy films. It makes sense that they would remove the one thing that ties the trilogy films together. However, I do feel like an opening crawl is very much a Star Wars thing. I got giddy when watching TFA's opening crawl. It signaled the beginning of a new SW story. If they remove the opening crawl, I can't say I'll have the same feeling. But who knows? I guess we'll find out in about 4 weeks.

I saw Rogue One. There was indeed no opening crawl. I'm gonna go have a good cry now, and not because there was no crawl.

I know, I was slightly disappointed at the lack of an opening crawl (yes I know what I said earlier), but the movie itself made the lack of an opening crawl worth it. Don't you think?

I saw Rouge One yesterday and I think that there are a million ways how the last part could have been avoided.

I don't. For one simple reason only:

"Many Bothans died to bring us this information."-Mon Mothma, A New Hope.

It was virtually inevitable.

"Many" not "all." One certain character, who was given no death scene, happened to have a ship and it was shown earlier in the movie that it was possible to fly away from the damage inflicted by the Death Star and survive. If said character HADN'T been the recipient of a faceless grenade, he at the very least could have escaped, if not also saved others.

Also, after double checking, the Bothans line is in Return of the Jedi, not A New Hope.

But I do still love Rogue One, don't get me wrong, complete with the downer ending. I love it all.

We are all praying for the Fisher Family with the death of Carrie today. Filming for the next movie appears to have been completed for the film coming out next Christmas. As far a Star Wars IX there is talk of creating a CGI Princess Leia that resembles Carrie.

Rogue One, Carrie Fisher, and Star Wars at work and home:

I absolutely loved Rogue One. Although it started out a bit slow/all over the place, the second half of the film more than made up for it! Spoilers follow. My favorite shot in the film is the X-wing emerging from hyperspace over Scariff amid its rebel fleet. Conversely the film itself picks up speed here and the audience is really able to feel the risk, excitement and hope of the mesmerizing battle that follows. I was thoroughly pleased with every use of Vader. "Be careful not to...choke...on your aspirations, director," was classically crafted! I had no qualms watching him dispatch a band of rebels with his hand and lightsaber at the perfectly-tied-in film's ending, especially given we got to see no suited Vader in action in the prequels. Watching Rogue One twice as well as the beginning of A New Hope is particularly satisfying. C3POs "There will be no escape for the princess this time" and Vader's "There will be no one to stop us this time" reveal new-found depth. As mentioned on theforce.net, Bail Organa knew what he was doing linking brother and sister through Obiwan, and he knew he had to act quickly while he still had a chance. The movie was great!

After hearing Carrie Fisher had a heart attack, I guess I just hoped for the best. I wasn't prepared to let go of her. And then her mother passed too. I was comforted to know how sad others were. I really appreciate her acting and her spirit. Leia was, in fact, the character I most anticipated seeing in The Force Awakens. I thought Harrison ford would be the first to go, like Han Solo. Fisher passes, and then so does her mother of a stroke, or broken heart. Leia's mother passed of a broken heart too.

On a lighter note, here are two short videos (less than two minutes each) that I hope you'll watch. The first I made for my boss at Outback Steakhouse for Christmas using a Star Wars opening crawl maker. It is written in the spirit of the opening crawl from the original Star Wars movie, but is about working at Outback! The second is Christmas at my sister's where my nephew and niece take me on with the best lightsabers I've come across yet: $5 bucks each, glowing and sound effects included. Enjoy, and please give me feedback!

Yes, my December has been very depressing with Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds. So sad.

I was hoping to re-watch Rogue One sometime this past week and then soldier on through an entire marathon of the other 7, but I got rid of my 2 disc dvd sets (to 2 other fans who wanted them!), bought the blu ray of all 7, and never had time to see Rogue One again. I'm hoping to have that marathon this coming weekend, but I doubt I'll get around to seeing Rogue One again before the next week. Of course I'd rather have it on dvd so I can just watch all 8 back to back. ;) Someday!

UPDATE! I've pretty much finished my marathon, I still have half of Force Awakens to finish. was trying to fall asleep while watching it tonight so I had to stop. Can't wait to see Rogue One again (soon!)! :)
