Lucy watched as her friend Aravis was about to shoot. She knew her to be a good archer and anticipated her shooting.

LOVERBLE: Just checking--did you notice where I as Peter asked you as Tumnus to come to my office to go over a schedule of royal business? Your going to look at the archery does not contradict this, since I did not say you had to come instantly; but please do take it into account. In the meantime, (1) I've gotten some needed rest, and (2) now it's quiet; so now I can insert a little incident which won't require the presence of the other player characters. What I'm putting here may give Dayhawk a further idea of what adventures she'd like to see, while not _forcing_ her to take the RP in that direction.

===============================

A female Talking Mouse named Kreechikee, one of the royal scribes, was awaiting the High King's convenience. When Peter entered his office, he found her working on a calligraphy project, something in which her small size helped her produce marvellously fine detail.

"Good morning, Your Majesty!" squeaked the respectful rodent.

"And good _drawing,_ Kreechikee!" replied Peter. "Has the latest correspondence been gathered together?"

"It has, Your Majesty." She set aside her own materials, and pushed a sheaf of ribbon-bound scrolls toward the edge of the desk nearest her King. "Without presuming to open any sealed messages, I have the impression that _this_ one will prove to be of the most importance. It was brought last night by General Oreius' daughter Yedulia, as she returned from a visit...with the Hermit of Archenland."

Knowing well what a vital role the mystic Hermit had played in helping to normalize conditions in the North after the death of Jadis, Peter agreed that a message from him would merit close attention. Picking up the letter indicated by the secretary-mouse, he opened it and read:

"The Hermit of Archenland, who shall soon resume his own name in the presence of Aslan, greets the High King Peter the Magnificent of Narnia. Peace be to your realm, which is as elder brother to my native land, albeit afflicted for a season.

"I refer to entering Aslan's presence, because the Great Lion, blessed be He forevermore, has made it known to me that my mortal journey will end before many more months have passed. What He has not made known to me is how and when He may provide a successor to occupy my dwelling and perform my duties. Therefore this letter cannot request any specific action on Your Majesty's part; but I do ask that you, and your royal kinsfolk, and all true-hearted Narnians, open your hearts and minds in alertness, to be watchful for any sign which Aslan may give with respect to His will in this matter.

"It has been a privilege and a blessing to me to have the acquaintance of Your Majesty and of your siblings. Be assured that, if the quest for my successor is not completed before I depart for Aslan's Country, I shall from within that country utter my earnest prayers that the quest shall be carried out as shall be most pleasing to the Great Lion, to His Father the Emperor-Over-Sea, and to the Spirit of the Lion's Breath.

"The peace of Aslan abide upon you and upon all who serve Him."

I am incredibly sorry. I mist have of missed this in the mass of messages. :o Sorry. I will leave them to it.

Mr Tumnus embarrsingly only just remeberd that he had been asked to join King Peter. He ran over to where the king was holding his bussness and knocked on the door.

"Come in!" called the High King upon hearing the Faun's knock; his voice held no annoyance, but did hint at important business.

When Tumnus entered, Peter said further, "A most important message has come from Archenland--from no less a person than the revered Hermit who assisted Cor and Aravis in their adventures coming northward. The nature of the message is such that it will be well if several copies are made for distribution to the other population centers of the kingdom. Kreechikee has already written out one duplicate; while she begins to duplicate her duplicate, I will ask you to take the original and begin on a copy also; you will thus learn as you write just what is the content of the letter. I'm partway through a copy myself; when we have enough made, I'll apply the royal seal to certify them all as true copies of what the Hermit wrote."

"Of cource you Majasty" replyed the faun slighty out of breath. He then walked over to one of the tables in the room and started to copy out the letter with the wrighting impliments that had been laid out for him.

Peter saw the Faun's eyes gradually widening as Tumnus took in the significance of what he was copying. But only when there were five complete copies besides the original did the High King speak.

"Tumnus, please bring three copies to my sisters and Aravis. Kreechikee, take one copy with you and see if you can find my brother. Oh, but if Edmund should be in private conversation with Angela, for Aslan's sake don't interrupt him. The news can wait for him to be finished with his rendezvous."

"As you wish your Majasty" He bowed before leaving the room and going back down to the courtyard where the Queens and Aravis were having their target practice.

"Excuse me your Majastys, please could I interupt you for a moment?" he asked once he was there.

"I have an important message from the King." He then handed each of them a copy of the letter. He was intrested in seeign what their reactsions would be.

Aravis opened the letter curiously.

She read down her face falling, the Hermit, the one she had spent time with before she entered Arcanland with Core, was dying.

Peter had not gone to his sisters himself, because he still had to see what was in the other letters on his desk. The most important one after the one from the Hermit was from one of his officers on the western frontier. It reported that the eagles assigned to survey the western wilderness for possible signs of enemies had been delayed by bad weather, and would not be able to make a worthwhile report for some days yet.

It crossed Peter's mind that an effort to find a new Hermit for Archenland--if indeed this was done by Narnians at all--was not likely to be a military venture. So the High King would not be shirking his duties if he took no direct part in that quest...whereas his duties _did_ require him to be ready to react to any news the eagles might provide.

He was still mulling this train of thought when he seemed to hear a strong, soft voice calling his name.

OOC: I don't know what you have in mind for the strong soft voice, but I Edmund is walking in.

*Edmund walks into the room*
"Peter! *pauses, makes a small bow* Your Majesty, I mean... Sorry. I received the message from Kreechikee. I am sorry about the delay. This is not very good news, I'm afraid. I did not expect the good man to be called to Aslan's Country so soon. Is there anything you have in mind? Does the High King thinks we ought to do something?"

"Edmund! Aslan spoke to me, just the moment before you came up the corridor! His voice came out of the icon of Him that adorns my shield! He told me that Susan's maidservant Adilia must be included in the quest to find a successor to the Hermit. The Great Lion did not explicitly say why this is so, but my heart tells me that when you find the man or woman who is meant to take over the Archenland Hermitage--and a Child of Adam it must be--this one will be able to answer the unanswered questions of Adilia's past!"

===========================

OOC: Hope that now you all can carry on without me. I've given Peter a valid excuse not to be on the quest, and my chest is bothering me. All prayers are welcome. -- Joseph R.

Short summation

This is happening after all the Pevensies have reached adulthood in Narnia, and apparently after Aravis marries Cor. We opened with Aravis casually visiting Cair Paravel, hoping to be joined there by Cor (a role not cast yet). Peter, the first of them all to get to royal business on the morning depicted, learns that the Hermit of Archenland expects to die soon and will need a successor in his position. Aslan then tells Peter that a handmaiden of Susan (a role that IS cast) is supposed to be among those who search for that successor. Among the first non-royals to hear about all this is Tumnus.

Peter himself must stay at Cair Paravel, for three reasons:

-- He has to await news from scouts checking on the western wilderness.

-- By staying offstage for a time, Peter can be an "ace in the hole" to come to the rescue with reinforcements if the other characters get in huge trouble.

-- Peter is being played by a man threatened with heart disease, your humble servant.

A maidservant for Lucy seems perfectly logical to include.

We still don't know how Angela (Mrs. Pevensie) will introduce her role. Edmund is getting ready to start a quest to find the new Hermit (Chosen by Aslan, we suppose). At the request of Aslan, who just recently spoke to the High King, Edmund will be accompanied by Adilia, Susan's Lady. Edmund can also chose others to accompany in this quest.
