The Duffer Training Academy. (please do not delete)

I can't be trusted to teach... I tend to just make the students dress up like beefeaters and tell them who to speak English properly... darn Yanks!! :D And spell properly Olorin!!! Oh and Derny... do you have any idea what happened to the Little Britain thread?? I put it around here somewhere a while back and now I've come back I can't seem to find it here or anywhere in the Archives!?!? It was my favouritest thread... :(

Oh dear. I've just searched. Is it possible it had some spelling mistake that would keep it from coming up in a search? I don't remember that it did. My guess is that somebody merged it with something. :( I'll look and see if they left a redirect; it couldn't have been deleted. Only things like 'the Last Post Game' get deleted. I don't see why it should have been merged!

Ahem... *points to siggy* You doubt my credibility?

I am spelling properly. You just don't use proper spelling. (American spelling makes MUCH more sense than British, even if the British was there first)

WRONG!!!

1. color???? harbor?????? that suggests a sound like 'or' but NO, it should be colour and harbour - you could have at least changed it to colur and harbur. That makes sense!

2. mustache!?!?! its from the french!! with mous meaning mouth!!! why change it - moustache is proper!!

3. similarly - theater!?!?!? its from latin theatrum - why'd you stick that e in?! WHY!?!?!?!?!

4. why do you have advise and advice but not practise and practice?!?!? thats just silly!

5. why fetus!? again stick to where it comes from!!! it should be foetus!! and encyclopaedia. You keep it for phoenix!?!?!?

That'll do me for now. I've had my rant and I think I've proven my point!! :D

1. I'll bet they wanted to, but they didn't want to antagonize the Brits too much... didn't want a repeat war of 1812, you know?

2. Because that's the way we pronounce it...

3. We pronounce it that way too.

4. Because 'advise' ends with a Z sound, whereas the verb form of pratice does not.

5. It's easier to spell...

Just admit it. The American spellings are simply more streamlined and intuitive. :p

I still think Chinese is the best. We should all type in Chinese. I mean the real Chinese too, not just the translated pronunciation.

EDIT:

Pratice? I seem to remember you saying something like you only allow yourself one typo a month (a very long time ago) This is the second this month.

Ai ekspekt yoo to taip laik dhis from nau on dhen (I do apologise, I would use the IPA if I could but not possible! :()

Actually, that's horribly un-intuitive. Must be your British heritage. The intuitive way to do it would be:

I eksept yoo too typ lyk this (you don't say "dis", do you?) frum now on then

See, it makes more sense. But don't worry, eventually it will be like that. It's just a slow progress. :p

nope cos 'y' would be a round front high vowel which we don't have in any form of english so it wouldn't sound right. You need the diphthong 'ai' which is what we have in like and type.

Also, 'dh' was my representation of a voiced interdental fricative, i.e. the sound made at the beginning of these and this as opposed to thick and thin. I couldn't use the 'eth' symbol because it doesn't exist on this forum to type it looks like this though:

P.S. Don't argue cos I study linguistics at university :D

Ever read this, Olórin?

The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the EU rather than German which was the other possibility.

As part of the negotiations, Her Majesty's Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a five year phase-in plan that would be known as "Euro-English".

In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard "c" will be dropped in favour of the "k". This should klear up konfusion and keyboards kan have 1 less letter.

There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year, when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with "f". This will make words like "fotograf" 20% shorter.

In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be ekspekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. Governments will enkorage the removal of double letters, which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the horible mes of the silent "e"s in the language is disgraseful, and they should go away.

By the fourth year, peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th" with "z" and "w" with "v". During ze fifz year, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords kontaining "ou" and similar changes vud of kors be aplid to ozer kombinations of leters.

After zis fifz yer, ve vil hav a reli sensibl riten styl. Zer vil be no mor trubl or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi to understand ech ozer. Ze drem vil finali kum tru! And zen world!

Do you really want that?
