I'm sure Hugo Weaving would be glad to reprise his role as Elrond. The role of Thorin Oakenshield should, in my opinion, be played by whatsisname who did so terrifically in the role of Hamish, the red-bearded sidekick in "Braveheart."

Guillermo del Toro is going to New Zealand for 4 years to make the two movies and guess who will be there too? Peter Jackson :D Both Andy Serkis and Ian mcKellen have announced they are going to play Gandalf and Gollum again. I think this is great! Because who can play Gollum better than Andy? I mean he worked 4 years on this role and excellent! And Ian is Gandalf. It will be weird to see another Gandalf instead of Ian. I do think they will take another actor to play Bilbo. Ian Holm is not that young anymore and Bilbo was much younger when The Hobbit happened (although computer techniques do a lot these days)
I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!!!

OK, as I'm reading through all these posts, can someone tell me briefly what plans have been confirmed for the movie? I've read about some of the actors and other things... but what about the release?

That means that most of you surely must have forgotten that weird trailer on the Web that appeared... I don't know, perhaps some time after the release of The Fellowship of the Ring.

The trailer used scenes from the prologue of the movie. And it had an scene of a dragon.

But now, The Hobbit is going to be filmed.:D

Woo! So, if I have this correct, Del Toro is directing it (he directed Pan's Labyrinth which I have personally not seen) and it's supposed to be in two films...is the latter still a go?

Yes, it is going to happen and Peter Jackson will be there too. Guillermo del Toro has to work together with PJ so that's a more satisfaction for the PJ fans. They expect 4 years for making both movies. And I look forward to it. Ian mcKellen and Andy Serkis confirmed their come-back on BBC radio.

im glad about andy and ian. :D i hope that they cast a youthful Bilbo since all the other main hobbits were youthful. and he is about Frodo's age in lotr

Bad News and Worse News!!! Some Good.

Bad news:

The date has been moved again to 2011 now.

Worse News:

The Hobbit may be cancelled because Of Christopher Tolkien not being paid by New Line for LOTR yet. He is gonna try and have it cancelled til he gets paid. He's going to court June 6th about it.

Good News:
James McAvoy (Tumnus) might play Bilbo and Gandalf is deffinatly being played by Ian McCellan if it isn't cancelled. Possibility filming may begin by the end of this year.

My goodness... how many legal battles are there seriously going to be concerning the production of "The Hobbit"? :( It's quite sad actually. Their just making us poor old fans suffer.
