Its about time. I was beginning to think they would never make this film. I remember it was put on and off a lot and it was hard putting rumor with fact but now that it's official, I'm pretty excited. I'll miss Ian Holm though.
Martin Freeman? That should be interesting. All in all, I think he'll make a good Bilbo. I'm glad Gandalf is still being played by McKellen.

I hope they'll include a song or two from the book.
Man, Peter Jackson has lost so much weight he could play Aragorn's part.

I'm interested to see who plays Bard the Bowman, the one _human_ good guy of any consequence in "The Hobbit." My guess is that they'll cast someone more or less unknown; but I would like to see the part played by Jason Carter, who was Marcus the Ranger in "Babylon Five."

I thought they were already making this film. It's been talked about for a while.

They were trying to. Guillermo del Toro (sp?) was originally the director, but due to labor issues (caused by the Screen Actors Guild and Australia's union junk), they haven't been able to start filming. the SAG threatened Ian McKellen and Hugo Weaving (Elrond) with exclusion from the Guild, which would hurt their acting careers. New Zealand doesn't have any filming unions, or doesn't have any obligation to them, and Australia doesn't like that.

In my mind, that speaks of a very arrogant government that can't stand to have a free market enterprise....apparently, while the film has been given the go-ahead, negotiations are still underway with the various unions, including the SAG. I think Peter Jackson should make it regardless; you know, I believe it was George Lucas back in the 70s who had to fund the first Star Wars film because he didn't put the credits at the beginning of the movie. He pulled out from the guilds and did it regardless, and look at how successful he's become over it. PJ took the risk the first time with making LotR with New Line Cinema when no other studio took him seriously. I don't think he'd be beyond taking the same sort of risk with Hobbit. I don't know, the politics of Hollywood escapes me and it's kinda ridiculous, IMHO.

I am very intrigued to see this after so many years of no LOTR. :D Not that I was a big fan of 'The Hobbit', but I'm still interested. Shame the original Bilbo actor couldn't do it - but he is clearly too old when he needs to be younger!

It did seem like an on-off film for soooo long. Thank goodness it is finally getting somewhere!

This should be wonderful. I love what PJ did with LOTR. But he won't be able to sue the same Bilbo, right, because that actor must be too old ... now I betetr go read the book and get all read for the film ...

Welcome Pitchike, I don't remember seeing you post before.

Much as I loved Ian Holm in the movies, I don't think he could play the young Bilbo even if he was cast. I'd love to see Andy Serkis back as Gollum; nobody should play that part but Andy!

And Orlando Bloom I think said something recently about how he'd be interested in appearing as Legolas...maybe he could play Legolas' father. ;)

No, he can play Legolas, he's the easiest of the LotR characters (besides Gandalf and Gollum obviously) to incorporate into the Hobbit ;)

I don't know if I'd really want Legolas to be in it, honestly....oh, and Elrond is in it too, right? You know, they could bring in Arwen and Galadriel too if they wanted (I don't remember if Galadriel was in the book or not).

I wouldn't want Legolas to be in it either.....Yes, Elrond is in the story. Mmmm..... I don't think Galadriel was in the book. And Arwen may have only been mentioned.

They could do a lot with the elvish characters from LOTR if they wanted; it might be cool. I would like to see Legolas in it, or Orly anyway. And definityly Andy Serkis must be Gollum! I wonder if John Rhys-Davies will play one of the dwarves? They could make him look different and have him be Thorin. I love him. John Rhys Davies. And Thorin, come to think of it.

John Rhys Davies pledged never again to play a dwarf.

*See the extended edition bonus features, disc 2, "Cameras In Middle Earth", Return of the King. Oi, that's really nerdy of me.*

Whyever not? It would be so easy and fun ;)

Ha, he had to put up with a lot XD

Legolas kinda annoys me...I used to be a fangirl of his.

Yes, he did. I don't blame him for not wanting to reprise a role that required so much prosthetic.

LOL that's funny you knew right where to find that info, AK! I own that set but have never watched all the features.

Well I am sad then. Who can ever be such a good dwarf?
