The Lord of the Rings- J.R.R. Tolkien

I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS!!!! I saw the trailer last night, thanks to AK's link, and just about died of happiness...

I went downstairs to share the news with my older sister, and the following conversation ensued:

Me: "The Hobbit" trailer is out!

Sister: "The Hobbit" trailer is out?! SINCE WHEN?!

Me: Tonight!

Sister: *sputtering* When will the movie come out?

Me: December 2012.

Sister: -.-

Mom: (visibly horrified) A year?! I have to listen to all of this for a year?

Little Brother: Why would they release the trailer for the movie a year before it comes out?

Mom: So that you'll be anticipating the movie all that time. They want you to be talking about it at the dinner table, talking about it with your friends, talking about it online, and talking about it in your bedroom when it's way past bedtime.

Anybody read the Book of lost Tales/Unfinished Tales?

Are you asking because you want to know or are you referring to the scene in the trailer with Gandalf talking to Thorin? Because in Unfinished Tales (I believe, I haven't actually read it), there's a story about how Gandalf met with Thorin in Bree and agreed to help him vanquish Smaug (Gandalf feared the dragon would become a powerful weapon of Sauron). I wonder if that's the scene in the trailer?

That would be a similar reaction my mom had. She said, "I thought it was only a few months away from release or something!" I replied, "well you know how impatient these Lord of the Rings fans are."

I love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so excited.:D

I have! It's good; I enjoyed it.

That's quite funny.:D

I was quite impressed with trailer. I am certain without a shadow of a doubt that Peter Jackison shall do a masterful job of bring the beloved classic to life. My concerns have all be laid to rest, although I am curious about the scene between Gandalf and Galadriel. Is this a possible hint towards a romance between them? Also, I think it was brillant they left out any hint of Smaug, it keeps us in suspense until next Decemeber (although I imagine we will get glimpse or two before then). :)

Someone said on Yahoo, because the article writer had this misguided perception too, that Galadriel was merely comforting/reassuring Gandalf. Apparently it was some kind of scene from the book (I'd try to find the comment, but I'm pretty sure the comments on that article have doubled since yesterday). Plus, the writer of the article couldn't even spell Gandalf correctly. And, I also doubt there's any romance because Galadriel is married, and it seems highly unlikely that Elves are the type to be unfaithful.

I highly doubt that PJ would stoop low enough to allow for romance between Galadriel and Gandalf. It is probably a seen alluding to the Sil. They are both members of the Council that decided what to do about the rings and Sauran. Long ago, PJ told us they would be including some Sil scenes that happen between the Sil and Lotr. :)

And, yes, Galadriel is happily married... and has been... ever since she was banned to Middle Earth by the Valar...

Interesting. I didn't know she was banned to Middle-earth. I might have to look into that one. ;)

I was referring to that maybe their was an old 'flame' between them. That it could be alluding to feelings they had for each other during those forgotten eons. It could be a forbidden love; that they could never be together. Perhaps something reminscant of Lancelot and Guinevere only without the infidelity. This is purer love that they keep hidden because of their duties on Arda.

I support my thesis by noting that Tolkien was very fond of the tales of Camelot. In fact, there is an authoritve translation of Sir Gawain and The Green Knight by Tolkien. Thus it is no suprise that there are similarites between the fabled Camleot and Middle Earth. A magical sword that was broken: both Anduril and Excalibur are shattered. Both swords are passed down from fathers to sons. This is but one example of the comparisions between these two magical worlds. While Arda retains its charm it is no doubt inspired by the tales of old that Tolkien knew and loved. I think even Smaug is very similar to Beowulf's dragon.

Tolkien barrowing concepts from other works does not deminish his brillance or the splendor of his world. Instead it shows his creativity. For nothing is new under the sun and taking what has been done and spinning it into a new narrative is not just genius but also innovative. Too many people think they need to reinvent the wheel when all they really need to do is adjust the wheel until It's different from the original.

You have a point, but I would add that while reinventing the wheel is not necessary in literature, it is better to adjust an old, nearly forgotten wheel than one that was just published (making the Narnia films "more like Harry Potter" is not a wise idea, but making the Hobbit more like Arthurian legends might be).
