A lot of this 3D craze was the result of a particularly good film (Avatar) that just happened to be 3D. And the 3D (from what I understand) is fairly conservative. and was executed by someone who is a big stickler for details (James Cameron). So, a lot of this current 3D craze rides on the coattails of a film that didn't have to be 3D to be a great film. The copycat syndrome. Still, the current 3D craze has roots that go back a few years. Different producers have been talking about it, and technology demonstrations have been quietly going on.
I am disappointed that they are (apparently) making VDT 3D out of a 2D production. Nothing can ever replace the shooting of a film that is intended to be 3D, with a 3D rig. (Every other booth at NAB this year featured some sort of 3D product.) The computer-generated 3D is likely to be nothing short of garish. Shame on them!
I will see VDT just once in 3D-- on opening night for the midnight showing, which will almost certainly only be 3D. After that, 2D. My eyes don't work well in 3D (exatropic strabimus, to the point I have split vision). After that, only 2D. (The last film I saw in 3D was 'Lions 3D' at the Luxor Imax theater in Las Vegas in 2007. IMAX active 3D does work for me. Sadly, this first-rate IMAX theater no longer exists. )(As much as I like Avatar (saw it 4 times), I only gave cursory thought to seeing it in 3D.)
I don't think this 3D fad is going to last. It is already showing signs of abating. It has come and gone several times since the early '50's. (You can see a write-up on the first 3D feature film, 'Bwana Devil'
herel. (I have a special interest in this film, as it is about the Maneating lions of Tsavo.)
Only time will tell.
That said, I fear other things about this film far worse than a shoddy 3D job. Like why is the White Witch involved?
