"It's just an old violin that I'm unfortunate enough to be bound to for the rest of my life," Kate said. "That's all."

"Right, thats all...of course...." Meridia rolled her eyes.

"Okkk well that's going to be hard to explain," Jade said.

"Why is that?" Verra asked her.

"Oh. So you carry it everywhere? Nice. Well, these Natives have been," Ivan paused to find a word, "Nice enough to feed us. Why don't we give them a song? You play, I'll sing, ok?"

"but how did it come about?" Verra asked.

"That is a very long story. But to shorten it for you, some of the more important people have been after Darron and me for a long time; because our family wasn't on their side of some conflict that I know almost nothing about. (They never tell me about those sorts of things, seeing as I'm only ten.) The magic surrounding the violin binds me to it, and if I loose it, our it breaks, then that's the end of me. They've been trying to get at Darron for years now, and as far as I know, they haven't succeded."
Darron drew his breath in sharply and wished that he could tell his little sister the truth.
Lisbeth gritted her teeth and forced herself not to say anything.
"But that's pretty much all I know about the violin," Kate continued. "But for all I know, there could be more."

Now Vissarion spoke to Kate. "Young maiden, the true source of life IS NOT a musical instrument, but the God Who created both life and music. Though I certainly will do what I can to be sure your violin remains unbroken, God is perfectly capable of keeping you alive even if it is smashed. I wonder if this fear you suffer from was not merely someone's way of controlling you?"

"I see," she said seeing the tensions of the room rise, she decided to drop the subject, "well Meri, what do you think? When we get back should I and Kev take that mission to Babule?"

"No," she said, "we both know you need time with the family."

"Yeah, I know," she said, wishing Keven were here now.

Ivan was about to say something sarcastic about Vissarion's faith, but he remembered what had happened with the elf and held silent.
Dmitri watched the conversation of the super-girls in confusion, but didn't dare ask them to explain. Instead, he said to Kate:
"Don't worry, I won't let anyone brake it."

Vissarion coughed for Ivan's attention. "As if YOUR sorry nether extremity DIDN'T need to be saved recently? I'm sure Dmitri is too smart to think he's able to overcome every danger by force; but sometimes, even having someone to WATCH for danger makes a crucial difference."

Kate nodded and then looked up at Ivan. "Mr. Ivan, I don't get how you can be so opptimistic one minute, and then sarcastic in the extreme the next." She looked rather bewildered.

"Because," he smirked, "I'm weird."

Ivan mumbled something that couldn't be understood.
He attempted to glare.
But then he gave a lopsided smile.
"Yeah, well.. luckily for me you do that butt-saving thing rather well."

Kate shook her head, even more bewildered than before. Again, she reached back and touched the violin she was carrying and wondered if she should play it.
