Vissarion swerves his scarred head to tell the child, "Betraying is like breaking a promise."

Then returning his attention to Jade, he gently but firmly brushes aside her clutching hands, telling her, "The first thing to say is what God is NOT. Really, THREE things that He is not. He is not the universe itself; He is independent from the universe, and would still exist if it were destroyed. He also is not a distant, impersonal uncaring force that just happened to make the universe; He notices each of us, including Ivan. And--which is often the hardest point to accept--He is not OBLIGATED to us by some contract that allows us to give Him orders. He retains ultimate authority, and He has His own reasons for the things He actively does, and the events He permits."

"OH! Jade he's Siad! In this world at least."
"Now was that so hard," Jade scowled.
She looked over at Darren, "finally somebody cute."
Meridia pulled out her Cyllobulb and began to suck the liquid nicotine, enjoying the breif euphoria.

Lisbeth glared. "Let's go," she said. She walked towards the opening and Raj followed her. Darron watched the two begin to leave and all of a sudden he wanted to make things right with Lisbeth. He had hurt her more than words could express, but he longed to be forgiven.

Nearly skipping, JAde followed.
Meridia caught up with Veragoe, taking her hand. "This is really weird. I wish Wess were here."
"Me too, and Kevyn, and my brothers."
"Finn would flip if he saw Jade flirting with what's his face."
"She needs to keep her legs crossed and her head focused, that's all I'm gonna say."
"And her shirt buttoned," she muttered.

Vissarion also left the room, not trying to speak further with Jade; having a woman rudely start ignoring him in mid-conversation even when it was a conversation she herself had started was nothing new to him. Out in the corridor from which he had penetrated the wall, he said to Lisbeth, "Do you see the staircases to left and right of us? Each goes up for three levels, but so far I haven't found any direct connection between the rooms one staircase leads to above, and the rooms the other staircase leads to above. I'm going to look for a _downward_ staircase now myself, if you care to come along. If you want to explore on your own, watch your footing; a few of the rooms have weak floors."

"Nobody is leaving me behind!" Ivan marches out of the room, pushing by everyone until he gets to the front.
"I'm the eldest, I think. Unless Vissy here is older. That means I'll go first, and if anything happens, It'll hit me, who'll die first anyway. Got it?" He glares at them all, as if daring them to disagree.

Lisbeth looked at him strangely. "Surely you don't want to die, Sir?" she asked.
Darron sighed. Lisbeth was such a sweet girl, but sometimes she didn't seem to understand things that everyone else saw as obvious. "Some people are like that."
Lisbeth didn't even act like she had seen or heard him.

"Of course I don't want to die!" Ivan snapped, "But I'm going to croak sometime anyway, unlike you, who are rather young. Therefore, it's the way of things that I put myself in front of you, although I'd rather not die myself." He nodded.
"You, Darron, what'd you do? You did something, right?"

"In my experience, Sir," Lisbeth said, "both the young and old die alike."
Darron looked at Ivan. "Yes, I -"
"He betrayed me," Lisbeth said. "And my family, and my friends, and their familys!"

"Death," Ivan says to Raj, "Is the absense of life. When you become A Star. Yeah. Ever wondered what those lights are in the sky? They're souls of the dead. They're lucky, becuase they've got no more sorrow or pain. Children die, true. I know this from experience. But you've got your whole life, I've got a few years," He looks at Darron.

"I can't top that," he says, "But I knowingly and willingly killed my best friend. So you're horrible. But I'm horrible too."

So mommy and daddy are stars now?

"Sure. Like my friend Bram. Unless, of course, they were murderers or thieves, or some other horrible thing. Then they become the lava of the earth." He tries to smile at the kid, "And I've heard that rain is the tears of the stars for us mortals. I've heard they don't forget us. I hope that's true,"

Lisbeth wasn't listening. She was watching Darron.
He opened his mouth to speak to her, she cut him off.
"I trusted you, Darron!" she said. "I trusted you with my life, and you betrayed that trust! I thought I could trust you, but I was wrong. I see that now."

Ivan looks at Raj.

"Bickering solves nothing. Remember that," he winks, and then looks scornfully at Darron and Lisbeth.
"Can't we play out this drama some other time?"

Darron said, "Look here, Lisbeth -"
"No, you look here!" the angry girl cried. "Don't try to speak to me and don't ask me to forgive you because I HATE you!"
Darron's face was flushed angrily. "Alright then, I won't!" But inside he hurt, because he wanted more than anything to be forgiven.
