"I'm not asking you to forgive him," said Ivan, "Just to not fight the whole time,"

"Darron," he says, "I understand your depression. You probably want to be forgiven. Forgiveness is strange....forgave my murder of his daughter, but I haven't forgiven my Master for beating and starving me,"

Lisbeth glared at Darron. He ran his fingers through his black hair, but he did not glare back at her, as he would have normally done.
"Come on," Lisbeth said. "Let's go."
Darron looked at Ivan. "I want her to forgive me, but I don't see how she can, as I can't even forgive myself."

Ivan nods.
"I don't think I'll ever forgive myself for my crimes. I try to tell myself they were justified. Some killings were...Some were uncalled for. I can't forgive others, so I can't forgive myself,"

"Then I guess no one forgives you," Meridia inquired.
"I was forgiven for my worst crime: the killing of a little girl. And that is all that matters to me,"
"What I did could never be justified," Darron said.

"Maybe...it doesn't matter if you're forgiven. You are truly sorry, yes? That doesn't justify things or make them better, but it has to mean something. Even horrible @@#% like us have a chance to turn their lives around,"

Lisbeth glanced up at one of the staircases that had been pointed out to her. "Well," she said, "are we going to try and find a way out or not?"

Vissarion had heard much of what was said by the others, and suddenly said to Darron and Ivan:

"I also have been forgiven for much. As a youth, I was proud of my size and strength, as if I somehow had _caused_ myself to inherit advantageous genes and so deserved credit. So I tyrannized everyone weaker than myself. You often hear that bullies are bullies because they are secretly afraid; but not me! I became a bully because I thought I was superior to everyone and I deserved almost to be worshipped!

"Not until I fell into the hands of those barbarians, and suddenly was as defenseless as a blind cripple, did I really learn fear. By this means, God humbled me as I needed to be humbled; and when at last I was safe again, I dedicated my life to serving God, and to making amends for my cruelty to those weaker than I."

Vissarion overtook Darron and told him, "If you plan to stay with this group, you mustn't wander far; some of the turns are tricky, though you will see places where I marked the walls."

Then, in a lower voice: "Young man, in the time since I pledged myself to God's service, I've seen men even worse than I once was coming to repentance and a total turnaround. God would _always_ rather save than condemn; and if you get right with Him (yes, it's 'Him,' no matter what some women want to believe), other matters will follow ...like Lisbeth eventually forgiving you for whatever it was."

Darron was silent for a moment. "But how could anyone forgive me for what I've done? I'm the worst traitor that ever lived. I alone am responsable for - for - things that I'd rather not talk about. Lisbeth will tell you, I've no doubt about that. She hates me with every ounce of her being. Goodness knows I deserve it, too."

Vissarion sighed. "Maybe I shouldn't have let it sound as if I could _guarantee_ Lisbeth forgiving you; but in the end, God has a rather higher authority in these matters than Lisbeth. And as for _Him_ forgiving you: in His purity and righteousness, He does aim to defeat all evil...but His preferred _way_ of defeating it is to redeem people _from_ it. God loves nothing so much as to rescue a soul from the very jaws of eternal doom, then laugh in the frustrated face of evil, saying, 'Ha ha, you don't get to claim _this_ one, either!' "

"I doubt the little girl forgives you."

Jade looked at Darren, "Don't we all," her eyes smiled.
