He may have the image of a dour, cloistered Oxford don with little knowledge of ordinary struggles. But C.S. Lewis, who wrote of epic struggles between good and evil in the imaginary land of Narnia, actually had a humorous side, his stepson says.

You’ll need to suspend disbelief to think four kids could stave off packs vicious wolves, arrow-shooting dwarves and battalions of other mythical beasts.

The Narnia stories, beloved of British, Australian, and to a lesser extent, Malaysian children, are finally coming to the big screen. The only prior adaptations having been made-for-TV movies, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe promises to be a full-blown, CGI-driven spectacle.

IN ACCOUNTS OF 20TH-CENTURY LITERARY movements and happenings, the 1950s is often ignored. Yet this decade, viewed as a quiet time in English literature, birthed three of the greatest-ever series: Mervyn Peake’s Gormenghast trilogy was completed, as was JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. And CS Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia, seven volumes, topped them all.
