Has The Magician’s Nephew been Greenlit?

Got an interesting e-mail this afternoon.  There’s a report saying that The Magician’s Nephew has just been given the greenlight.

It comes from a newspaper reporter in Colorado Springs.  I’ll e-mail some folks and try to figure out if it is official or not.  Here’s what the article says:

Regarding [The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader], despite rumors that the franchise was so toxic that Walt Disney Pictures happily passed the film to 20th Century Fox — and would be discontinued thereafter — a sequel has been greenlit. That’s right, ladies and gentlemen: Get your camping tents ready for the release of The Magician’s Nephew.

    • I have chosen ‘Jonathan’ to send this enquiry to because I don’t know how to send one to https://www.narniafans.com ( and I can’t keep up with all this Twitter technology). I read in the article ‘Has The Magician’s Nephew been Greenlit?’ that an anonymous reporter from Colorado Springs has described the Chronicles of Narnia film franchise as ‘toxic’. What exactly is this word supposed to mean? I’ve heard it mentioned before but I have always assumed that it refers to films that are not considered a long term cash cow. Is my assumption correct or is there some other answer? If anyone responds to this message would they like to please post it in the same column as Jonathan’s message.

      • On the menu at the top there’s a link that says “contact us.” That’s where you can send a message to us.

As for the term ‘toxic,’ that would mean a number of negative things. It depends on the context. “Despite rumors that the franchise was so toxic that Walt Disney Pictures happily passed the film to 20th Century Fox…”

Basically, that could mean any number of things, including that the franchise might have been a “money drain.” But all of that was rumor based on estimates.

        • Thank you for your reply Paul Martin. Personally I am of the view that Walt Disney Pictures made a mistake by dropping the Chronicle of Narnia series. From what I saw of the 3-D version of The Voyage of The Dawn Treader I was surprised by how good this story turned out to be given the slimness of the book source. Whatever story turns out to be the next film (assuming it gets the go-ahead) I am confident it will turn out to be of the same quality. For what it is worth did Paul Martin also happen to notice the brief notes of Narnia music which appeared on the soundtrack of the 3-D Alice In Wonderland film from March 2010? This music pops up when the White Queen extracts a phial of blood from the beheaded Jabborwocky dragon towards the end of the film.

  1. is polly young in MN, cos it doesnt really say in the book? i was wanting to try out for Jill, but I obiously cant for a while, and i’ll be 16 or somehting by the time they do SC, so pollys probably more suitable

      • Wow! If I could play the PART i WOULD ONLY BE A YEAR AND A HALF OLDER THAN HER IF THEY START IT RIGHT NOW. COMPARE THAT WITH GEORGIE WHO WAS 15 IN VDT AND LUCY WAS SUPPOSE TO BE 10.

        • That proves age doesn’t matter with compare to characters. My sister noticed that Gael is 10 in VDT, so Lucy should to be 10 or 11. I told her that Georgie was 15, that’s why Lucy looks like older. (and she is, as you know.)

          • when you think about it isnt will pouler 18 now and by the time they make SC he would be like 23-24 when hes suppose to be like pre teens! wierd i know!

  2. So many rumors….oh wow…I don’t know WHAT to belive! I just want there to be another movie, and I want it to be made a LITTLE sooner than 2013, but then again, we don’t even KNOW if it’s REALLY being made, or if it’s all speculation, right?

  3. To get ridiculously ridiculously ahead of things… after a fantastic MN adaption ( maybe with the perfectly deplorable yet likeable Jason Isaac’s Captain Hook as Uncle Andrew), a slightly spooky SC adaption by P J Hogan ( played with some of the same cold clammy enchantment feel like the mermaid scene from Peter Pan) and then the Arabian nights/Narnian fairytale of Andrew Adamson’s H&HB;, the legacy and success of the Narnia franchise moves into an t.v. series japanese stylistic anime of 6 to 8 hours, telling new Narnia stories of the Golden Age, Prince Caspian & Prince Rillian eras respectively.

The characters are voiced by the movie actors, and the series has individual trilogies within it and is not linear – sometimes may go from an Rillian story era arc to a Golden Age Pevensies arc etc. Some of the story arcs are written especially by people like Terry Brooks ( whose Magic Kingdom Of Landover stories i liked even more than the Shannara’s whihc were also great) & other varied authors. The anime t.v. series starts to air about 6 months before the last Narnia chronicle film ever & which is the end of what has grown to one of greatest fantasy film phenomenons in history, the hugely anticipated The Last Battle 🙂

  4. I hope they do make the Silver Chair, as a book I rate it up there with the LWW. If you’ve seen the bbc adaptation you can see the potential, with the help of up to date tech this could make a great film. It seems a shame to skip this book and do MN which could be a little slow as a film. As a book it doesn’t have the epic fight scenes that hollywood deems necessary to make a blockbuster.

If they were thinking of straying from the Pevensie stories, why not ‘the Horse and his boy’? I believe this book is seriously under rated. In the sequence of the books it is between LWW and PC. However the story occurs during the reign of the four Pevensies in the golden age. It is different as the main body of the story doesn’t occur in Narnia but in Calormen, a place that harks back to the Arabian Nights. The main plot is centred around a boy running away to Narnia, with a Narnian talking horse. Of course there is more to it than that, I encourage you to read the book to find out!

  5. I know this is off topic, but Happy Birthday William Moseley!!!! We love you, Will!

  6. The “Chronicles of Narnia” page on Facebook is teasing us fans. They keep saying something big is coming up! I guess it’s news about MN being greenlit. I just wish it would be confirmed soon.

    • I know! They are saying something special is coming up but i don’t think it about MN’s Greenlit….

Maybe they’ll give a chance to star in the next narnia film (just a cameo) or any trip to somewhere….

  7. There’s so much intriguing symbolism in the Magician’s Nephew.
    1. The creation will be a beautiful sight seeing how far filming has come over the years.
2.Regarding Kirke’s emotional struggle with his mother dying and Aslan’s tears in return.
    3. Kirke refusing to eat the apple from the White Witches request.
I wonder what new scenes they will add to give action than the White Witch’s display of power in London.
I was thinking they would have done the Silver Chair, to give the actor who played Eustace more role opportunity and you certainly don’t want him to age too much. I would request that they would do The Silver Chair, The Horse and His Boy, The Magician’s Nephew and The Last Battle.

    • AMAZING!I haven’t read that one….very cool though.(My brother has the books, so i have to ‘beg’ him to let me borrow them….it stinks being the middle kid.

  8. I agree with Joseph. They should be focusing on SC because of Eutace’s age. Of all the reviews I’ve read for VotDT, everyone adored this actor’s performance. It would be a shame to re-cast the role because of age.

H&HB can wait until after MN because it would give the Penvensie’s time to mature. It wouldn’t be horrible to swap the order of H&HB and MN if needs be because H&HB stands on its own more than any of the other books. (Look what the horrible publishing industry did to the order of the books.)

  9. i don’t care what movie is next as long as andrew adamson is the director

    • I wish…i really do, but i don’t think he’s ever coming back. 🙁
At least, we can hope for another director that is similar in style, because that’s what I miss the most about Andrew; his laid back, easy going, take-all-the-time you need to get-into-your-character more kind of style.

  10. make your choice,adventurous stranger;
strike the bell and bide the danger,
or wonder till it drives you mad,
what will have followed if you had.

which means if u dnt try u will nvr know and u will keep wondering what will have happened if you have known…..

  11. theres got to be thousands of polly wannabes on this site, and the sad truth is that they may be good actresses, but they’ll never get the part, because they dont have a agent or whatever. I am one of those girls(though i’m not sure wether i can act). If we joined forces, and created a petition for a fair audition process(open auditions only), then every girl would get a fair chance. anybody with me??

  12. I do agree that I wish The Silver Chair would be made first and these books would be made into movies: The Magician’s Nephew, The Horse and His Boy, and The Last Battle. When I also do think about it, maybe making The Magician’s Nephew next is a good idea because the people who are making it want to honor executive producer Perry Moore’s wish that Magician’s Nephew would be made next. When someone who makes movies for a living dies, I have noticed that the movie making crew like to make a movie and towards the end write in the end credits: “In memory of. . .”

  13. I hope Tilda Swinton plays Jadis In the Magian’s Nephew. I think Tilda did a good job playing Jadis, she never over did It. I hope Tilda comes back to play Jadis In the Nagican’s Nephew, I think she would do a good job playing Jadis again. After all, In my opinion, It makes more since to try to get Tilda Swinton to play Jadis again, because Tilda Swinton plyed her In the lion, Prince Caspian and the Voyage Of The Dawn Treader.

  14. If only the Christians would shut up about how this is their story and Aslan is Jesus and all the rest of that rubbish perhaps the movies would do so much better. Outside of the USA most parents would prefer their children not to be indoctrinated. As a child who loved the books I never made the tenuous religious connection and I’m sure most others didn’t either until it was pointed out to them, regardless of what C.S. Lewis intended. Apart from the resurrection at the stone table the link is really really tenuous, so just let it fade away…and enjoy the story.

    • Wow, Lykon. Way to be sensitive to the fact that most of us are Christians. It’s not at all “rubbish” and it is a fact that Aslan is a supposition of Jesus. You make some very bold claims without evidence or facts, claiming to speak for “most parents” outside of the USA. I don’t suppose you read the creation of the world in The Magician’s Nephew, nor the final chapters of The Last Battle..

  15. reply from the other comments @Lykon & @Paul Martin i don’t care if it’s about jesus or not, i adore the movies and the books, i love it for what it is. 🙂

I really hope Tilda will be Jadis, i really adore her and jadis, Jadis is awesome, and hopefully it will be the same voice for aslan, aslan is awesome as well :), if they don’t bring tilda back as Jadis it will ruin the whole movie for me, i loved her as Jadis, and i def can’t wait for this movie, this is my fav Narnia book out of the series.

  16. i am soooo happy when i know they make MN instead of SC . I love MN . i am waiting for it too badly. pls make movie as soon as possi!!!!

  17. The books were not meant to be allegorical in nature. Anybody who’s read the author’s comments on this would know that; however, C.S. Lewis was a Christian, and made the stories to be what you could call a parallel example of what would have to happen in a world that is made perfect and that is subsequently corrupted by evil. Do we have to make it so complicated? They are good stories with great morals to help children understand the importance of our thoughts and actions to everything and everyone around us. The natural consequence is that they will someday seek the truth behind what is evil and what is not. Whether they come to the conclusion that Jesus Christ is what He said He is or not is up to them to figure out from outside sources – not from the Chronicles of Narnia.

  18. Dear Tilda Swinton, It’s me Caitlyn. If you see this comment, I hope you will play Jadis again. I think you are a good actress and you should keep going. I hope you will play Jadis and I hope you will play the lady of the green kirtle In The Silver Chair. I have to go now Tilda, but I hope you will play Jadis again and I hope you have a good Christmas. Love Caitlyn.

  19. I hope they make the Majitions Nephew soon. I can’t believe we have to wait until 2014, but It takes time to get everything together. We just have to keep waiting. I really hope Tilda Swinton will play Jadis again. To me, Tilda Swinton Is Jadis period. All the other old versions of Jadis are not the original versions of Jadis to me. In my opinion, Tilda Swinton Is the original Jadis period. I really do think that Tilda would look nice In the outfits that they would have her put on during the Majitions Nephew. I really hope Tilda plays Jadis In the Majitions Nephew. I really hope they start working on the Majitions Nephew soon, because I’m getting tired of waiting. If Tilda Swinton see’s this comment, I just want to say please play Jadis In the Majitions Nephew, the realm of Narnia would not be the same without you at all, love Caitlyn.

  20. I really hope Tilda will play Jadis again. To me, Tilda Swinton Is the real Jadis. To me, Tilda Swinton Is the original Jadis. The girls that played Jadis In the older versions did not do a very good job In my opinion. To me, It’s Tilda Swinton all the way. Thanks for the autographed photo Tilda. Will you please play Jadis In the Majitions Nephew? Love Caitlyn. PS. Will you please play Jadis In The Majition’s Nephew Tilda? Love Caitlyn.

  21. I hope Tilda will also play The Lady Of The Green Kirtle In The Silver Chair to, love Caitlyn. PS. I’m a big fan of yours Tilda, I’ll always be a big fan of yours Tilda, love Caitlyn.
