“Honey, are you alright?” Mrs McIntyre took her eyes off the road for a few seconds and looked at her daughter in concern.
Ace was holding the car seat in a death grip, and during the journey, her usually pale face had gone slowly pink, then purple, and was now a worrying shade of green.
“I’m fine, mom.” She managed to gasp out. She tried to look out of the window and enjoy the landscape as it whizzed past, and not think about where she was going. A camp! A camp full of other teenagers! She’d never talked to other teenagers. She was generally ignored by everyone at school. The only friend she had was her cat, Mozart. And now she had to put up with a whole load of people her age for a whole summer.
“Oh look, here we are.” Her mother’s voice broke into her thoughts.
She looked up to see a large sign declaring ‘CAMP ROCK’ in bright yellow letters. Beyond it was a whole set of buildings. The place was deserted.
“I think we might be late,” fretted Mrs McIntyre, getting out of the car and heaving Ace’s luggage out of the back. “Come on, Ace, I think you need to sign in at the office or something.”
Slowly, Ace uncurled her fingers from the car seat and got out, stretching her cramped limbs. She slung her backpack over one shoulder and picked up both her violin cases. The red one contained a normal violin, and the larger blue one contained the electric violin she had to save up for two summers to get. She shut the car door hurried to catch up with her mother, who was already staggering towards the office holding Ace’s large suitcase.
“Mom, it isn’t too late to change your mind,” Ace panted, trying not to trip over the undone laces of her black Converses. “I could always stay with Dad this summer.”
“I know, honey, but I think it’ll be good for you to meet new people.”
Ace rolled her eyes, uttered an exasperated sigh of defeat and followed her mother into the office.
