How long have you been a fan of Narnia and when did you read the books first?

Lady Liln - I also thought your Aslan painted car was very cool. I apologize for putting in the family picture. I never read the fine print, so I didn't know it wasn't allowed until after the fact. I changed it as soon as I found out.
i really don't know, but that's all i can figure. nobody else has a narnia car as far as i know...so i thought i had a pretty good chance.Did they really reject your entry because of extra people in the photo? I can see why you'd be frustrated. I thought you had a strong entry.
well i think you accomplished your goal wonderfully. i wish i'd known you! hahaThanks for the kind words on the gingerbread house, etc. I was really pleased with how the party turned out. I was trying to create that sense of opening a door and entering a whole new world. The wardrobe door opening into the fur coats, with all the snowflakes beyond really did seem magical. Of course, the day before the party I was panicking. I'm used to giving/catering large parties, but I had over 250 positive RSVP's with people calling everyday asking if it was ok if they brought their friend/neighbor, etc. I ended up doubling all the food I was making, so in the end I had twice as much as I needed, as usual. And the morning of the party, we couldn't get the wardrobe door attached to the front door (it was made out of foam core, cut out and reglued to give the 3D carved effect and then faux painted to look like wood, but you can't nail through foam core with tearing it, and tape (even duct tape) wouldn't hold. KingFrank (husband of 26 years) finally figured out a way, using brackets on the bottom of the real door for the wardrobe door to rest on, and fishing line to hold it to the top.
Hi and a very warm welcome to you, QueenHelen. Really glad to have you here with us. Your entry was very good. I'm the old man here (almost 61) I would love to have a Narnia party like yours in June. Really cool!!! Anyway, again, welcome. Hope you stay with us.
Thanks, TNF! I'm happy to be here. As a newbie, I have a question - how do I get the cool quotes and pictures to post with my messages as my signature? I uploaded a profile picture but it doesn't show up when I post, and I couldn't find any place to enter a quote.
Question...I tried making turkish delight for my mom and it didn't turn out so well. What recipe did you use and how did you get yours to gel so well?
Into the Wardrobe, sorry it's taken me so long to answer. I saw your post while at work, but I've got no cookbooks there, and I didn't get home until after 11:30 pm (2nd job at my parents' Kaleidoscope shop, and then church meetings), and I still needed to make 200 valentine cookies for my little kids choir for tomorrow (oops, today, yikes) and make dessert and other things for Valentine's dinner for "KingFrank". I'm going to have to look for my recipes. I think I combined a few I found online, and in the Narnia cookbook. I know it had LOTS of plain gelatin and sugar in it. So, it may be another day or two, but I'll get you the recipe.
Celeste - There are two types of recipes - ones like Carl's that use cornstarch for the thickening (often bringing mixture to the boiling point (240 degrees farenheit) as in candy making), and ones using gelatin. I had better luck with the gelatin based recipes. You can find plain gelatin in the grocery under the Knox label, usually a small orange box (but not the larger one for making a drink to strengthen your nails!). It's usually near the regular jello. It usually comes with 4 individual packets/box.
I think I based my recipe on the one in the Narnia cookbook, but adjusted a little looking at other recipes found online. Unfortunately, I can't find my notes. This is my best guess as to what I did.
6 envelopes unflavored gelatin
1/2 cup cold water
1/2 cup orange juice
1 cup hot water
5 cups sugar
1/2 tsp salt
6 Tblsp lemon juice
1/2 tsp lemon extract
1/2 tsp orange extract
Red food coloring
powdered (confectioners') sugar and cornstarch (mix half and half)
Soften gelatin in cold water and orange juice and set aside.
Put hot water and sugar in pot and bring to boil, stirring constantly. Lower heat. Add salt and stir in softened gelatin until completely dissolved. Simmer for 20 minutes.
Remove from heat and let cool for 10 minutes. Stir in lemon juice and lemon and orange extracts. (note - you could use all lemon or all orange - I just liked the mix. Traditional Turkish recipes call for rosewater - which can be hard to find. I don't really like the taste, so I didn't use it). Add a few drops of red food coloring (I added this, because in the movie trailor - I was making this before the movie came out - the turkish delight looked really red when Edmund bit into it.)
Line 9"x13" pan with plastic wrap. Pour mixture into pan. Cover with plastic wrap and let stand overnight in cool place (doesn't have to be refrigerated).
Cut the set mixture into 1" cubes. Use a hot knife to cut (run under hot water). Mix some powdered sugar and cornstarch together (say 1 cup of each), in a bowl. Drop cubes into bowl a few at a time and shake to cover.
Store in sealed tupperware container, separating layers with wax paper.
Hope that works for you. Let me know how it turns out.
Emily
There is one vote per ISP address per day. So each calendar day until Feb 23 you can vote again....are people allowed to vote every single day or do they just vote once? It says once per day on the place where you vote...but I thought in the original rules that a person could only vote once total...I'd have to look again. I thought that there was one vote per ISP address.
