Expired Narnia Contest Entry

How long have you been a fan of Narnia and when did you read the books first?

I have been a Narnia fan as long as I can remember. My parents are also big C.S. Lewis fans so they introduced me early, but the first Chronicles of Narnia book I remember reading by myself was the Magician's Nephew in elementary school - which is longer ago than I probably want to admit! :) - it was in the 1960's).

And yes, I am (now) on Narniaweb as well, as QueenNellie (QueenHelen was already taken).

How do I get quote and photo into my messages?

Wow! It is amazing to have you on here Queen Helen...I hope you win!!!!

Thanks, TNF! I'm happy to be here. As a newbie, I have a question - how do I get the cool quotes and pictures to post with my messages as my signature? I uploaded a profile picture but it doesn't show up when I post, and I couldn't find any place to enter a quote.

Lady Liln - I also thought your Aslan painted car was very cool. I apologize for putting in the family picture. I never read the fine print, so I didn't know it wasn't allowed until after the fact. I changed it as soon as I found out.

thanks :) your entry was great. i loved the gingerbread house and the wardrobe door and coats! and i wasn't at all upset about your family picture...not as far as your part anyway. now the buena vista people...that's another story. :D i just think if they're going to make acceptions for some people on something like that, they should do it for everyone. that's actually why i thought it'd be ok...b/c they apparently didn't have a problem w/ your pic.

Did they really reject your entry because of extra people in the photo? I can see why you'd be frustrated. I thought you had a strong entry.

Thanks for the kind words on the gingerbread house, etc. I was really pleased with how the party turned out. I was trying to create that sense of opening a door and entering a whole new world. The wardrobe door opening into the fur coats, with all the snowflakes beyond really did seem magical. Of course, the day before the party I was panicking. I'm used to giving/catering large parties, but I had over 250 positive RSVP's with people calling everyday asking if it was ok if they brought their friend/neighbor, etc. I ended up doubling all the food I was making, so in the end I had twice as much as I needed, as usual. And the morning of the party, we couldn't get the wardrobe door attached to the front door (it was made out of foam core, cut out and reglued to give the 3D carved effect and then faux painted to look like wood, but you can't nail through foam core with tearing it, and tape (even duct tape) wouldn't hold. KingFrank (husband of 26 years) finally figured out a way, using brackets on the bottom of the real door for the wardrobe door to rest on, and fishing line to hold it to the top.

i really don't know, but that's all i can figure. nobody else has a narnia car as far as i know...so i thought i had a pretty good chance.

well i think you accomplished your goal wonderfully. :D i wish i'd known you! haha

Hi and a very warm welcome to you, QueenHelen. Really glad to have you here with us. Your entry was very good. I'm the old man here (almost 61) I would love to have a Narnia party like yours in June. Really cool!!! Anyway, again, welcome. Hope you stay with us.

Thanks for the welcome, Son of Adam. It's good to know I'm not the only one of my generation here (I'm a little younger than you, but not by that much  ).

I think everybody should have a Narnia party. It was so much fun.

I threw a Narnia party for my mom...watch out Carl...Julie and I may get to planning some mischief since I know when your b-day is. Haha

Emily, while in orange you can't put in a siggy. Apparently there were people coming in as spamers and they put highly inappropriate photos in the siggy sections. So, they want to know for sure that people are legit before they allow them to put in a siggy or post pics or start threads outside of the Tea With Tumnus section. I think once you're over 15 posts or so your name will change to black and it will be all good. Then you can post the amazing pics I'm sure you have.

Question...I tried making turkish delight for my mom and it didn't turn out so well. What recipe did you use and how did you get yours to gel so well?

If you go to "quick links" under the "user control panel" click on "edit signature". There should be a box that that says "edit signature" or "your signature" and you should be able to type in whatever you want. If you go down further there is another box that's entitled "signature picture" and you should be able to type in a URL or click the browse button. Once you've done what you want don't forget to save changes the button is near the bottom of the page. I hope I've helped and that my directions were clear! Good Luck and God Bless!

Into the Wardrobe, sorry it's taken me so long to answer. I saw your post while at work, but I've got no cookbooks there, and I didn't get home until after 11:30 pm (2nd job at my parents' Kaleidoscope shop, and then church meetings), and I still needed to make 200 valentine cookies for my little kids choir for tomorrow (oops, today, yikes) and make dessert and other things for Valentine's dinner for "KingFrank". I'm going to have to look for my recipes. I think I combined a few I found online, and in the Narnia cookbook. I know it had LOTS of plain gelatin and sugar in it. So, it may be another day or two, but I'll get you the recipe.

I have this recipe for Turkish Delight. I don't know what other recipies may be out there.

Thanks Emily, no rush...wow, you're really busy. I was filling out Valentine cards for my 2 nieces for their parties at pre-school today. However, I wasn't quite as busy as you...bless your heart!!! Whenever you get the chance...yea. Also, where would one get regular gelatin...I didn't see any in our grocery store unless I was looking in the wrong place...I think I've learned that this doesn't mean packets of jello at this point. Anyway, thanks again.

Thanks Carl as well...one does require instructions along with the ingredients though...you're sweet...thanks.

Turkish Delight Recipe

Celeste - There are two types of recipes - ones like Carl's that use cornstarch for the thickening (often bringing mixture to the boiling point (240 degrees farenheit) as in candy making), and ones using gelatin. I had better luck with the gelatin based recipes. You can find plain gelatin in the grocery under the Knox label, usually a small orange box (but not the larger one for making a drink to strengthen your nails!). It's usually near the regular jello. It usually comes with 4 individual packets/box.

I think I based my recipe on the one in the Narnia cookbook, but adjusted a little looking at other recipes found online. Unfortunately, I can't find my notes. This is my best guess as to what I did.

6 envelopes unflavored gelatin
1/2 cup cold water
1/2 cup orange juice
1 cup hot water
5 cups sugar
1/2 tsp salt
6 Tblsp lemon juice
1/2 tsp lemon extract
1/2 tsp orange extract
Red food coloring
powdered (confectioners') sugar and cornstarch (mix half and half)

Soften gelatin in cold water and orange juice and set aside.

Put hot water and sugar in pot and bring to boil, stirring constantly. Lower heat. Add salt and stir in softened gelatin until completely dissolved. Simmer for 20 minutes.

Remove from heat and let cool for 10 minutes. Stir in lemon juice and lemon and orange extracts. (note - you could use all lemon or all orange - I just liked the mix. Traditional Turkish recipes call for rosewater - which can be hard to find. I don't really like the taste, so I didn't use it). Add a few drops of red food coloring (I added this, because in the movie trailor - I was making this before the movie came out - the turkish delight looked really red when Edmund bit into it.)

Line 9"x13" pan with plastic wrap. Pour mixture into pan. Cover with plastic wrap and let stand overnight in cool place (doesn't have to be refrigerated).

Cut the set mixture into 1" cubes. Use a hot knife to cut (run under hot water). Mix some powdered sugar and cornstarch together (say 1 cup of each), in a bowl. Drop cubes into bowl a few at a time and shake to cover.
Store in sealed tupperware container, separating layers with wax paper.

Hope that works for you. Let me know how it turns out.

Thanks Emily!!! I really appreciate it!!! I'll try it eventually...hopefully I'll have more time in a few weeks. Mom's b-day is in March, so maybe in addition to the pie she wants, I'll try again and do better this time. About how much does each batch make? Thanks again.

Julie

Julie - the recipe I gave you should make about 100-120 pieces, depending on how big you make the cubes. You could cut recipe in half if you want and make in an 8x8 pan. I was making large quantities at a time for the Narnia party.

Thanks!!! Back on topic though....are people allowed to vote every single day or do they just vote once? It says once per day on the place where you vote...but I thought in the original rules that a person could only vote once total...I'd have to look again. I thought that there was one vote per ISP address.

There is one vote per ISP address per day. So each calendar day until Feb 23 you can vote again.

Ah, ok thanks! If you get to go, who are you gonna take with you? Who would you like to talk to most from the cast and crew?

By the way, have yall gone over to the Introduction Thread in the Tea With Tumnus section? Introduce yourselves over there so that everyone can say hi to ya and get to know you better. Are you gonna stay on TDL and hang out after the contest is over? I hope so! We're a little nuts on here...but I'm sure you've noticed. It's fun.
