I totally agree with you! I wouldn't want to imagine a teacher like that (too late) But I really love the scenes with him and Harry like the one where they were in DADA class and Snape says "Yes, Sir." and harry goes "You don't have to call me sir, professor." (of course in a more literature kind of way) Haha! That really cracked me up! If I were snape, I would be REALLY pissed.

so would i, but snape is evil and i absolotly hate him! i want to beat him up, andf twist him and hurt him! i really do!

Pppahhhckkkkk.....you've killed me, you have..

Umm...well...I liked him....in wahtever book it was that Harry wen tinto his thoughts and found out his dad and Sirius making fun of him and poking him and stuff...lol....good times..goood times..*Cough* I mean....stupid James./....:D

I noticed a while back that there were all these polls like, "Which is better, Narnia or Lord of the Rings?" or "Narnia or Harry Potter?" which I thought was really kind of dumb, of course everyone's going to vote Narnia, this is a Narnia forum. So I thought it would be fun to have a poll like this.

Which books do you like better, Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings? Why? (Yes, I know they're not entirely parallel, but that's not the point.)

For myself, I liked Lord of the Rings better, because it was a lot more beautiful, thoughtful, and rich, not to mention full of poetry! I also think that is was amazing how Tolkien basically invented several languages and cultures. I thought the characters were a lot more mature and interesting than those in HP, the action, setting and people groups more varied. I liked how the pacing was slow enough for you to have time to reflect, and yet fast enough to keep you interested. Not to mention that it's the best fictional book in the entire WORLD. :D

So, share your opinions!

I must agree with you on LOTR, Tolkien did a masterful job and painstakingly created as realistic a fantasy world as could be imagined. Truly a work of art, and to my mind, great literature.

I love HP as well of course, and could not be happier with the final chapter, in which JKR has shown she has the stuff to write great symbolic literature alongside CON. But LOTR will always, to me, but all but impossibly to beat.

As a Tolkiendili my answer is obivous, despite the fact that I like Harry Potter, and I enjoyed reading it, and knowing more about it as an example of low fantasy... but as an Epic Lover, I totally go Middle Earth. I have said it.

There is no doubt in my mind that Lord of the Rings is the better work. It is full of so much depth of character that there is no way that Harry Potter can touch the majesty that is the Lord of the Rings.

LOTR of course. It is not only epic but it also has a lot of different races, languages and characters but it is such a tremendous story. Look what world J.R.R had created! He had created a complete different world
I love HP but nothing can beat LOTR.

Harry Potter was good, but it would never make it into my ten-favorite-books list.

Yet The Lord of the Rings is at the very top of that same list.

I love The Lord of the Rings.

No question in my mind: Lord of the Rings is not only a classic in the same category as The Brothers Karamazov, but actually invented the fantasy genre as we understand it. There were fantasy stories before Tolkien, but they never got beyond the category of fairy tales, no matter how "beefed up" they got (George MacDonald and Lord Dunsany were two examples). Tolkien almost single-handedly created the class of literature, as Georgette Heyer created the Regency Romance.

The Potter books are fun stories, and I think are destined to become classics in the vein of Roald Dahl stories like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. However, I don't consider them in the same category as Lord of the Rings.

Strange enough when I started reading LOTR I didn't like it...I tried again and still don't like it...I don't know why but it doesn't get me eager to discover what will happen. I voted for Harry Potter

I began reading LoTR a while ago and really couldn't stand it.And believe me,I really TRIED to like it.But I didn't.The films are ok though.
As I LOVE the Harry Potter books,I voted for them :D

If you have tried reading The Lord of the Rings, and could not get into it, I implore you to try again sometime, and fight your way through it. Sure, some parts are more exciting than others, but I promise you, no matter who you are, or what you are or are not interested in; once you get to the end, you'll want more.

In the beginning when I started to read LOTR I laid it aside and then after a month I picked it up and read it again and then I finished it within a week :D I was completely hooked and now I am a ringer for life!!!

If you find LOTR to onerous, start with The Hobbit. It is a charming story, and it will get you all situated in Middle Earth. Then when you are ready, begin LOTR, and there is your old friend Bilbo ready to get you on your way again.
