Harry, definetly. Actually I am NOT a fan of "The Lord of the Rings" series. Great books, but for some reason the characters do not touch me. HP series and character, including Harry himself, I love.

Agreed! I don't really like LOTR much. I really tried reading the books, but -- FOR ME -- It was a bit boring. The movie was ok, but I kinda got bored easily. But I'm not the one to judge, My dad is a huge LOTR fan, but definatley not me. :D

For myself, I liked Lord of the Rings better, because it was a lot more beautiful, thoughtful, and rich, not to mention full of poetry! I also think that is was amazing how Tolkien basically invented several languages and cultures. I thought the characters were a lot more mature and interesting than those in HP, the action, setting and people groups more varied. I liked how the pacing was slow enough for you to have time to reflect, and yet fast enough to keep you interested. Not to mention that it's the best fictional book in the entire WORLD. :D

I couldn't have said it better! I've only read the first Harry Potter book, but The Lord of the Rings is in a category by its own, no matter what book you're comparing it with.

For those who found it boring to read in the beginning: did you finish Book 1? (the first half of The Fellowship of the Ring). I have to a agree that this is a somewhat boring part (I'm not keen on Tom Bombadil), but once you've passed it, you just can't stop the book.

Honestly, I tried to. But we all have different tastes. I have the entire collection (LOTR 1-7) in my bedroom and I haven't read it for years. I tried scanning it once but then I just got bored scanning. SCANNING. really.

Harry Potter appeals more to me since it's about kids whom I can relate too. And for me, it's more exciting. in LOTR, it's exciting, but I cannot relate to the books or the movies that's why for me it's exceedingly boring. Not any of the characters can I relate to.

But we all have our own tastes and let's keep it at that.

definately LotR, When I am reading it and someone pulls me out of it, i am always EXTREMELY dissapointed. because when i look up, i'm NOT in middle earth. i'm back inwhatever dreary place i happened to have been reading in. LotR is brilliant that way, y ou get really INTO the story.

Eragonand Eldest are like that for me as wel, when i stop reading them i want a dragon :D

I like the Lord of the Rings better, even though I do like Harry Potter.

It is a little hard for me to read through the whole LOTR trilogy. In fact, I've only read all three all the way through once. I love the story and the characters, but I guess it's just because Tolkien was so detailed and descriptive. There's so much going on, and so many characters to keep straight, and everything is very specific. Still, you really get drawn into the story. Tolkien was so creative! He didn't just write a story, he created a world (I know Rowling created a world, too, but not so detailed and with languages and stuff).

Harry Potter is very interesting and clever, and I really love the plot. The books are good for a quicker read than LOTR, but I just don't think they're as beautiful and deep.

It amazes me that Tolkien wrote such a great piece of literature, and yet people look down onto it as "boring"

There are not many Tolkien-like writers that you see too often.

It's just part of the impatience of this present culture and mindset. I think that's a lot of the reason why HP caught on so well--it goes whipping fast, almost like watching a movie. Books like LotR appeal more to those who love beauty enough to dig deep and really experience a book, even if it doesn't grab you right away.

I give my vote to Lord of the Rings. I luv how Toiken fits in Christianity with his story. I have never read HP because I won't. I disagree with it.

Even though I respect everyone's opinion, I kind of hoped there wouldn't be posts like this because you really can't say which you like better. If you haven't even tried reading HP, you can't compare it with anything....

On the other hand, I'm also curious to find out if anyone had any other reason they liked HP better other than, "I couldn't finish LotR, it was too boring!" ;)

I don't think there is any other reason to like it better. People who are "readers" -- who have the deep appreciation for the detailed fantasy world Tolkien created and the ability to lose themselves in his long narratives -- will always choose LOTR over HP, in my opinion. The only reason I can see that anyone would choose HP over LOTR would be that they did not have the patience to stick with JRRT to get to the beauty of losing themselves in Middle Earth ...

And I say this as a huge HP fan myself, too.

I have to say (not to be a devil's advocate inky :D ), that the writer in me loves Tolkien and the way he so masterfully describes and draws you into middle earth. He truly is brilliant.
But as a reader, the Harry Potter books have the slightest edge because of the characters. I love the characters in LOTR but they are harder to relate too. For me, reading about people in HP seem more real and accessible while still being completely fictional. I think that shows how talented JKR is. And I love the humor...sometimes I think that Tolkien needed to learn to laugh a bit more.
Oh, but the history major in me also loves LOTR precisely because of the history. So that's my views.

well i never read lord of the rings -it doesnt intrest me...
but im in LOVE with the hp book! :D

I am an avid Harry Potter fan( yes i went to get the last book at 2am)
Unfortunately the Deathly Hallows ruined it for me! I thought it was a terible way for the series to end!

Thus LOTR is my favorite over Narnia, Harry Potter and any other books!

No way, I loved DH! I thought it was a great way to end. The onlly thing I would have liked at the end was more explanation of where everyone else ended up: Neville, Luna, etc. I know JKR told us some of it in follow up, but that's not "official," I would have liked to see it in the book, set in stone as it were.

Oh my gosh. I never actually admitted I liked Snape (not even to myself) throughout the series, but deep inside I actually did. I realise that now. But what made me realise that was reading those chapters in Book 7, and all those emotions I'd held up since I was eight for Snape just poured out x] I wanted to cry and cry.
Call me a loser xDD

I merged the thread about Snape into the book one rather than the one-stop thread because of all the spoilers since the first post in the one stop thread wanted to avoid the spoilers. Please everyone either post in here about the books or in the other one stop thread about the films as opposed to making a bunch of other threads on the topic. Thanks.
