Hm..maybe I should think about it.But I'm still a bit doubtful.You know I really really tried to like it,but the more I read,the more bored I got.Maybe I'm just born to be a Harry Potter fanatic :D

I'm a Harry Potter fanatic, too. But HP happens on our earth, albeit in a fantasy version of our earth, but we can imagine ourselves living on that planet because, in fact, we're Muggles. In Middle Earth, you are in a completely different world. There is nothing from our world there except the emotions of the characters and the driving forces of good and evil, which are really divinely executed for us by the author. HP is like a trip the circus, but LOTR is like a journey to the bottom of the sea ... You have to go much farther away to circumstances beyond imagination to get to Middle Earth. But once there, you are completely involved in it. Try The Hobbit and see. :)

So it has been, you know... not many people, aware or not of what is an epic (and it's not needed always to say 'fantasy' for even historical do always have a minimal hint of fantasy) are able to comprehend it and able to read it as well. But I don't flame them.

Also, know that what was once the Epic Poetry has become the modern narrative, although the Epic still continues with those stories of fantasy, sword & sorcery, historical novels, etc. I'll say it with this: a novel.

I have said it, and being an Epic Lover... that's gotta count for something.:D

Hail Middle Earth! Aiya Endorenna!!

Just try it Frida. As Inky has said it is a complete other world. Of course Narnia is another world too but it is less complicated when it comes to characters and races and languages as LOTR. You should try to read the hobbit first. It isn't tough. After this you will be invited -as Inky already said (I love her explanation)- by Bilbo and then the big story starts. Tolkien explains a lot and there is always the appendix and guide to Middle-Earth to explain the characters and places.
I just love LOTR and now the music is in my head :D

That has been a good reason to invite others to read LOTR. As for me, I began as a Tolkiendili in the same day as my brother, Delta. And because his love for the Epic grew up rapidly, what I didn't understand, he explained it to me.

Also, we started obviously, with LOTR, not the Hobbit, and once we finished with the trilogy, we were eager to learn more, and thus, with such zest and desire to know more, we read The Hobbit and the Silmarillion in an easy way... although this last one was somewhat hard to read. But that just gave us more experience... and when it comes to the epics and books my brother has read... well, that's gotta count for something.

Yep. Now... I wonder how would look some lines of the book. Do you have any idea? I mean, what would this book tell someone about LOTR but this time... addressed for Dummies.

I'm just saying, how many times will be encircled, or underlined or anything the most important words. And also, how many times will be mentioned the word 'thingy'?

There's this shy midget with hairy feet. And then, in a council with a really sui generis group (i.e. ONU), there's a debate about what will be the fate of this dangerous circle thingy. After a few seconds, this circle thingy needs to be taken to the one place where it was formed and the one place where it can be destroyed... which is not a jewel shop nor the one of a burglar. It has to be cast into the fires a volcano. Stop asking or you'll get a headache''

Also, the Nazgul are not drunk men, nor the orcs, these human examples in our world behave worser than those creatures depicted on the story. Also, these creatures have also been looking zealously for the circle golden thingy.

Don't mistake the Witch-King with a female because he is definitely male. The Witch-King once was a man who happend to be a king but as many humans, he wanted more power and money. Of course he could not ask his people to give him more money because they would refuse and to avoid protests and boards with slogans he decided to use the hard way. When the charismatic sauron came and offered him a ring, the King was lost. He believed this strange man and forgot the words of his advisor. Without talking with the counsil he accepted the ring. The sad thing is this poor man still believes he has all power available. Not knowing he is having a fake ring for all those years

Yeah...it sounds very interesting :D I like your explanation too!

Hard question, very hard question...
That´s why my vote at the end goes to "I like both equally", because I do, I love both in different ways.

But, I think Tolkien writtings are the best I have read.
Tolkien books are the best fantasy-epic books, at least written in XX century (I guess I am not overreacting XD). Tolkien books are emotional, rich, deep, they are poetic, it´s more like classic literature, and more mature, definitely. Tolkine makes you think, analyse.
At least you can feel very sad, you can cry, or to fall in love with Tolkien, that´s doesnt happens normally.
Specially The Hobbit and LOTR.
And The Silmarillion... The Silma is in another level, The Silma is like an History book.
I know it´s complex, I find it a bit hard to read (And me, I started reading Tolkien in my 20s XDD) but I enjoy it so much that I dont care if the book is hard.

But just avoid comparisons with sucha different things as Harry Potter. Harry Potter for me it´s fun, it´s an scape, I love Harry Potter world.
They are different.

I noticed a while back that there were all these polls like, "Which is better, Narnia or Lord of the Rings?" or "Narnia or Harry Potter?" which I thought was really kind of dumb, of course everyone's going to vote Narnia, this is a Narnia forum. So I thought it would be fun to have a poll like this.

Which books do you like better, Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings? Why? (Yes, I know they're not entirely parallel, but that's not the point.)

For myself, I liked Lord of the Rings better, because it was a lot more beautiful, thoughtful, and rich, not to mention full of poetry! I also think that is was amazing how Tolkien basically invented several languages and cultures. I thought the characters were a lot more mature and interesting than those in HP, the action, setting and people groups more varied. I liked how the pacing was slow enough for you to have time to reflect, and yet fast enough to keep you interested. Not to mention that it's the best fictional book in the entire WORLD. :D

So, share your opinions!

I give my vote to Lord of the Rings. I luv how Toiken fits in Christianity with his story. I have never read HP because I won't. I disagree with it.
