Homeschoolers in Highschool, Part Three

A second text message from home reached Alipang, to the effect that Chilena had left the house without saying where she was going, and it was not Dan's house she went to. (Aaaarrrrgghhh, JUST when I was actually getting some attention from Kim!!!!) He excused himself from Kim's delectable company, telling her truthfully that Chilena had wandered off; Kim was sure to understand concern for one's sister, and there would be other times for them to talk again.

Alipang recalled a place Chilena was fond of, with a tree that was good for sitting and thinking--or indeed, sitting and NOT thinking. He placed his bet on that location....and won. Within twenty minutes of his reluctant parting with Kim, Chilena heard her brother's voice:

"I told you I could always catch you. What are you doing here instead of with Dan?"

She looked up " I thought you where mad at me?," she asked, wipping her tears " Al?," she asked, not looking up at him with a frown.

"You've heard the saying, 'Love the sinner, hate the sin'?" said Alipang, not coming near her. "For me, it's 'Love the SISTER, hate having her treat me as if I'm so stupid I can't figure out that adoption still means I can't marry her despite being unrelated, when * I * had just told HER that I knew I couldn't.'

"I still love you as much as I ever did, though now I have to doubt whether you respect my intelligence."

She got up slowly walking over to him " Oh, Al I love you so much," she told him, taking his hand " You my brother no matter what but I don't like seeing you hurt nor you don't like seeing me hurt either," she told him, looking down at her feet " You the one who took care of me when those boys where mean to me what esle can I ask for?," she told him, still not looking up at him " Brothers post take take care of their sisters," she told him.

"I have still _been_ taking care of you, right up through this morning," Alipang reminded her, not initiating any kind of physical touch whatsoever. "I was the one who figured out what 'rabbit out of the hat' must mean, remember? And it may interest you to know that _Kim_ found me outdoors, _apologized_ to me for falsely judging me, AND was beginning to act like she _enjoyed_ being around me, when I _dropped_ all that to look for YOU. That should prove that I love you!"

She hugged him " Al I told you if you took your time with her she well know the real you like I do," she told him laying her head on his chest " Al I don't want to loose you as a brother you hear me?," she told him, looking up at him with her light brown eyes " I know we fiht a lot but like this before it hurt me when we did," she told him.

Alipang allowed her to lean on him; but he did not hug her in return, did not touch her in return, nor did his tone soften. "You _can't_ lose me as a brother, as long as I'm breathing; I don't break my commitments. But when _you_ bring up openly the subject of 'If we weren't related,' and then make me feel like something _dirty_ when I answer you truthfully..." He left the sentence unfinished, not trusting himself right now _not_ to say something _seriously_ hurtful to her.

When he felt a little more controlled, he asked her in a _slightly_ warmer voice, "Why didn't you just go ahead and see Dan like I said?"

" Because I-I didn't want to I was to up set because I hurt you," she told him, tears rolled down her cheeks " Al you need to understand I didn't mean to hurt you like that ever," she told him, pulling away " Al can you for give me?," she asked, not looking up at him.

"Chilena, I _have_ to forgive you, you're family; but I know that sounds cold. I don't mean to be cold, but with the _way_ that you hurt me, it's hard to find any _way_ to be warm now that won't....Okay, here." He gently took her head between his hands, as he had done a thousand times, making her face him as he had done a thousand times. "This will be the last time I ever kiss you, never again after this, not even the tiniest little token peck; but _this_ is to say that I do forgive you and I do still love you."

He deliberately kissed her on the right cheek, on the left cheek, and finally directly on the mouth. Having done this, he stepped back and said, "NOW, shall we let Mom know that you're okay and will be visiting Dan after all? You could even drive me to the Pansit so I could hang with the church volunteers as I was planning to."

He spoke as if everything was normal now; but something had flown away, never to return.

" All right Al lets go tell Mum I'm all right," she told him, taking his hand " Al I love you to much," she told him, pulling him close " You can love me as you been doing I won't stop you but I guess you are right I-I don't know I should be your sister any more the way I acted," she told him, pulling away from him walking way.

" You can love me as you been doing I won't stop you but I guess you are right I-I don't know I should be your sister any more the way I acted," she told him, pulling away from him walking away.

Her words and actions touched off something in Alipang. Overtaking her, he spun her around, pulled her close to him, repeated the same "final" set of kisses, then "squished" her against his hard-muscled chest. "Since you _can't_ be anything _more_ than my sister," he told her, "don't you _dare_ be anything _less_ than my sister. I'll adjust some way...probably no more lap sitting for you...but I'll adjust...WE'LL adjust." And one more top-of-the-head kiss.

Alipang did not take her hand, nor put a hand on her, as they walked away from that thinking-tree; but he was _with_ her. They were together; and they _would_ adjust to this, as countless pairs of close-in-age adoptive siblings who loved each other intensely had no doubt been adjusting ever since adoption was invented.

But having received some favorable attention from Kim did make it easier.

Meanwhile, Robby Lang was searching for Jason Kaitlyn...and finally spotted him, heading toward that nauseatingly wholesome place, the Pansit Paradise.

When they got home there was a car she never seen before " Ah, Al is that one of your friend's car?," she asked, taking his finger " Because it isn't one of mine because I don't have any but Dan and Jen," she told him, walking in side the house there was a lady kind of look like Chilena, but around the 50's.

"Look at her nose," Alipang hissed in Chilena's ear. "She has a nose like yours." Without more ado, he rapidly strode up behind the newcomer and said, "Good morning, ma'am. Did you happen to see any of Mrs. Capshaw's rabbits coming out of hats lately?"--which was, of course, pointing to what Chilena had imperfectly remembered of a magician's-rabbit reference in her birth mother's earlier phone call.

She looked at her birth mother for awhile " That's my mum?," she asked, walking closer to Al holding his hand tight.

" Hi sweetie," she told her, with a weak smile then looked at Al with a nod.

Alipang was direct and blunt. "Ma'am, is my sister's birth father with you? Elizabeth, Chilena to us, wants to know plenty. Why not start talking to her right now, while I bring OUR PARENTS out here?" He ducked inside and called hastily for Mom and Dad.

" Yes, getting something from the car he be right in," she told him, with a smile " So your name is Chilena now? look how you grown," she told her.

Chilena didn't move she wasn't sure what to do or say.

Eric Havens was out the door with Alipang in a flash; Cecilia stayed inside to prevent Melody and Harmony from disrupting things. "Hello, Kathleen," said Eric in an unruffled voice. "Are you back from Morocco to stay?"
